I think my site got slapped by some spotty teenager - I blame the parents :bat: - put a back up in place but just wondering how do you prevent something similar happening on your site?

The web and indeed the internet isn't secure.. there are only varying levels of security.

No one can answer your question if you dont say what happened :)

Your hosts should be able to tell you what happened to your site. As for security, what kind of site was/is it? security depends on wether you give others access (i.e. via forum loopholes or scripts)

Not hosted by fasthosts was it ?

What happened, what did they do take over your index page?

I've had a old outdated phpbb forum taken over by some hacker a few years ago ... with a warrning that if I didn't update my security he'd hack it again

...cheeky wad ...if i ever get my hands on him I'll show him how I can hack his front door with steel sheet or some nice graffiti .

Hmmm, interesting... I guess i'm lucky to only have a basic site with them so I've not had to access it at all this year ...and my password arrived in the post , no prob, bishbashbosh, done ...what problem.

I do find generally they're hosting is the best I have come across over the last few years, always quick as hell to bring my site up and its never been down in five years, not even for an hour, pretty good by all my other hoster's which all seem to glitch every now and then, usually for several hours (And thats just the ones I notice if you get me) ...I'll be sticking with them for speedy web client access alone.

yes its possible a server was hacked - data tables appear all messed up. basically the front page html etc looks fine but everything else database driven went down. oddly had some stuff db-driven but not openly linked to i.e. something I was working on the side with, and that was unaffected...?!
so if the server was hacked then that would explain it, and I'm assuming a few other websites on the same server to have suffered similar problems.

Streamline who are my hosts, sent around an email a few days ago saying that I needed to change my password on my emails, they are doing this to all customers as part of a security update.

If you have any open form subscriptions to a DB on there you need to ensure they're protected against SQL injection. It's VERY easy to screw up a DB unless you've protected your inputs ;)

shiato storm - you are aware your site was moved servers yesterday/today arnt you... or did your host forget to tell you ;)

I work for the company your host uses for some of their hosting :)

See? there's a simple explanation for everything ;)

some of their stuff has

ah, that might be where a hiccup could have come in. just my luck though! either way its made me investigate back-up stuff...can't be a bad thing to have something in place to do it automatically...

Your host should run daily backups, have you contacted them, opened a support ticket? should be easy to restore.
