I really want to sort a front end for my webspace now but i don't have the 'know how'. I could ude a portal but i don't want to, i want a simple site that's easy to update, fast to load etc.

As an example, the following is the kind of thing i want but without the shopping facility he has. (great photography too he is.

http://www.ambientlife.co.uk/gallery_104441.html

How much would i be spending on a site like that?

You could always ask the company that designed the site in question, they've got a link at the bottom of the page

yeah, i noticed that but it probably costs loads.

You'd be quite surprised how cheap sites are to build these days.

You'd be wanting to change the pictures on regular basis though - which would mean you'd need to look into a little bit of HTML work (nothing hard though!).

Alternatively, look at JAlbum. Very good software, quick to use, upload folders to website and BAM there's your site done.

Like everything, it depends where you go. For a fully customer design, you could expect to pay a lot of money.

I'm having a go in dreamweaver from a template. It's not that i can't do it, it's just i don't have the patience to do it lol.

If you'd like something free, then you can try e.g. JAlbum, Coppermine or Gallery 2, they're not difficult to set set up, they're rather fast as well. You just have to check whether your web host meets their requirements.

Both my sites (listed below in my sig) use Coppermine gallery. It's not to bad to set up, but you need to be able to have a host that supports php and mysql.

I have coppermine as one of my options in fantastico, i have decent webspace which supports php/mysql etc.

Expensive. I pay £2.99 for .co.uk and £8.99 for .com

Use coppermine then, they have a great forum for help, and I could give you some help if needed.

Just create a couple of HTML pages for the front end, and use the gallery for the rest.

The great thing about coppermine is it makes uploading and organising your images really easy, so you don't end up redesigning parts of your website just cos you have a few new images.

that was my intention, to make a 'front end' in HTML then to use coppermine - i'm just not sure about skinning coppermine. My other idea was to make my own gallery template which i could repeat in all my galleries.

Hi

I use album.pl for my forum members website, only trouble is that no members have upload pics to it yet, album.pl is free and a cgi perl script it will integrate with most forum boards, and its easy to configure.

Album.pl Link there are some examples on that site, and the downloads top right

Here a good link to see what its like colorado.edu

There are loads of downloadable skins for coppermine, and they are really easy to change the graphics for, colours are a little trickier.

I am sure you would find one of the default ones suitable for your needs.

If I were to build that site from scratch freelance, I'd charge probably about £750, based upon one week's development at £20 an hour. That would be the development only; no design. I'd imagine a company would charge more because of their overheads.

The design would probably take someone who was good 1-2 days ... no idea how much that'd cost.

All-in you'd probably be guessing around £1k ... but it'd go up pretty sharpish if you wanted to have dynamic updating of pictures ... could easily double or more once you introduce a content-management-system.

These prices are for something that's custom/bespoke/one-off ... i.e. nothing to start from. If you're just running from templates, I'd imagine a company's cost would come down by maybe 75-80%.

I guess the point is that paying for a site is going to cost you ... but that if you do decide to do it, then make it easy for yourself. Know absolutely in advance what you want, and if you can find a template you like that'll make it cheaper, then do that.

I think the advice about trying to do it yourself with one of the free template-sites or web-software is very sound.

you can do some very clever stuff with a template and something like simpleviewer or monoslideshow flash plug ins. Just don't have sound, I can't stand websites that want to bombard me with sound effects.

Web wise i use Web-Mania for hosting and Jalbum for my pics.

Threw a quick multi-folder album together last night (and tried out some HTML encryption software out on one of the folders).

Works well and can do print sales from it as well.

Go have a look see :D

I really want a nice front end for mine, but until i can set aside some time it will have to suffice.

Another alternative is to use RentaCoder (http://www.rentacoder.com).

You post your requirement, amount you're willing to spend and peopel bid for the work.

I'm having my new printing site developed as we speak from a guru out in the states. It's content managed, XHTML and CSS validated and incredibly easy to manage.

I work closely with my developer, almost project-managing it to keep the cost down and will have a complete online store, with automated image upload, professional cart and mysql/cms managed backend all for $400...

I know the saying is 'you get what you pay for' but in different parts of the world, especially Far/Middle east you get some superb programmers at very little cost.

Something to consider anyway... :)

That isn't half cheap! It is a full custom CMS made just for you?

Yup.

I had a template that I liked (as mentioned above) that was limited and was HTML. I had a simple PHP upload script that would use pictures but it wasn't getting people on the site, or buying at least (with 1500 individual hits per day).

He's on it as we speak, building a complete PHP solution, modifying the template, select as many files as you like and it starts uploading in the background.

CMS for adding my new graphics, offers, items, products, order tracking, background etc all to the site - again all done using some very fancy techniques thats above me.

Order processing through paypal or over the phone with credit/debit card, though I aim to integrate with Protx once it's paying for itself.

He did this site for me: http://www.togsfriend.co.uk for good money also. Because of the way he works, and how he can adapt the solution if I have an idea I always give him a good bonus. This is his third medium-sized project for me...

i gave up, i have made a half decent front page, tried to connect to my site via dreamweaver and it won't connect to my ftp, so tried uploading my index.html and associated files to public_html with my files in a folder (all linked up in dreamweaver to work on my site). then when i opened my homepage, all the text colours and fonts had changed, my image wasn't showing etc, tried again using filezilla and it did the same, i don't know where i'm going wrong.

Anyway, for now i've set coppermine as my homepage, looks better than nothing.

Wez, I'm free thurs/fri afternoon if you would like me to pop over and have a looksee for you.

That site looks good. Though, there's a little coding error in FF and IE6. The background image for one of the content areas doesn't quite fit.
