This sounds bad, but is there anything **CHEAPER** :suspect:

Dunno; unless you know someone who'll do you one

There's a million free ways to build a website, what do you want to put on it?

gallery, about me, contact(ideally) with a fill in form and introduction.

Just my best photos basically.

Thanks

gallery, ideally. with a couple of other pages. Maybe sell prints would be a bonus. But to start with just a way of showing off (loosely) my work

I put my site together in a few evenings, having read up a bit on CSS and HTML - it's pretty straightforward stuff. The galleries are put together using SimpleViewer, which is free. The site has some tidying up and tweaking to do yet, but I'm quite pleased with it as a first attempt.

Have a look at wordpress http://wordpress.org/hosting/ my website is created using Wordpress as i got fed up teaching myself HTML and PHP. I've never used the free hosting part but its worth a look.

yeh thats the other thing. I cannot host it myself. so would need that

looks like clickpic may be the way forward. As wordpress only seems to do blogs for free.

why not build your own using a template website? Thats how I did mine. I use jalbum for galleries, and the rest is from www.csstemplates.org :)

You can get free hosting from a lot of places as well, but most of them either require you to put some adverts on your page, or they don't offer PHP scripting (which is useful for contact forms)

Hi Thanks mattyh. I will look into building my own. The contact form isn't a major issue just thought it would be good.

Does anyone know of any cheap hosting as i would rather have no adverts.

Joomla (www.joomla.org) is now released as version 1.5 which is a huge jump on from where it was at in terms of usability. You can use image viewers such as Simpleviewer or the less resource hungry Slimbox which was lacking without some serious hacking in the older versions. Open licence so only costs will be any add-ons you may purchase, some of which are very good.

Wordpress is waaaay easy to use although you will need a better understanding of CSS to get a website that doesn't look like a blog.

Did you have to pay for your website template?

My friend started me one with joolma, although after fiddling i seemed to have deleted all the pages! Also i couln't have simple pages like an intro.

Any ideas of what i may have done on the joolma website

My website does not use Joomla (I use Lightroom) although I am working on a version where I can use a shopping cart.

In Joomla you "trash" your pages and only delete if you empty the trash. The challenge with Joomla is how you handle your images. If you only need a few images and have time to add them then it is a good tool however if you have a large number then you need a gallery tool and integration into Joomla has been either flawed or again you need to get under the bonnet.

Re hosting. Go with one that has latest SQL and PHP support. This is a must for all Content Management Systems.

any recommendations for hosting people then?

I use a local company. That way I can go round to their offices and REALLY bitch.

I pay a small amount each month and currently use 1.3Gb of unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth, and up-to-date server (upgraded recently). You should be able to earn back what you spend fairly easily.

They are www.teclan.com but they are one of many (not for me, they are really good to me) that will exist around the country.

Thanks although at £9 a month slightly more than i want to spend at the moment.

I will look into building my own one more

Take a look at Moonfruit, for £2.99 a month you can build any site using either the templates or site maker tools to easily design your own site.

I used them to build our camera club site together with my photography site.

Who do you have your internet with you get free webspace with virginmedia(ntl) thats how I got my first website up. This is what I've created using wordpress so far by the way: www.payneplanet.com

Seriously, don't be quick to dismiss Wordpress. I just build a basic photoblog template in 37 minutes. I timed myself.

check it out
www.newvibes.com

If you want help with a theme then I'll give you some :) I enjoy it.

iframe = bad. It's not going to help with your search ranking. It's also bad practice. If you want any suggestions let me know and I'll send you some code.

I use www.freeola.co.uk for hosting - unlimited storage and bandwidth £3.00 per month (the hostings free if you have their broadband package). I think they have some web builder software on there also.

try heartinternet.com for free hosting with no ads. You have to look quite hard for the free links though :D

:agree:

Try them, it has a control panel and all. (As mentioned, you have to look hard for the link to the free hosting)

As for building web sites, you can use everything from Notepad to Dreamweaver.

Have a look at : http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tut/lessons.html

For a free HTML editor try 1st Page 2000 : http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage2.shtml

JAlbum is good for galleries http://jalbum.net/, this has lots of alternative skins, so it can look different depending on how you set it up.

Thanks Everyone, I need to digest it now and think what will be best.
