Ok im moving away from the Clickpic site and stepping to the big world.

Have come across 2 that have caught my eye,
Namesco and 1&1

I will be getting a new domain and also a started hosting package... Any advice or experiance with any of these is going to be greatly recived :-)

(snip cause I've no enxerience of the other one) but 123reg? excellent and reliable? seriously - not words I've ever heard used for them before
 
have a look at vidahost.com for UK based hosting. Then maybe consider using something like wordpress + a theme for your site
 
I've got over 200+ domains with 123reg & have never had one problem with them.

It's a horses for courses thing I suppose & if you look hard enough you'll find people that have had problems with every company in the world.

I'd definitely look at a UK hosting company as this fairs better in UK search engines & can be a god send if you need to speak to customer services.

I've used Easily for my domain registration and can vouch for their service and support.

For hosting I decided to use EZPZ Hosting - http://www.ezpzhosting.co.uk/. They are based in the UK and I have found their support very good too.
 
Whats the best to do with regards a hosig package to build it? Windows based...

I think almost all of mine are Linux which was the cheaper option of the two.

I don't think it will make much difference to you, for me the main things I wanted was PHP, MySql in case I ever needed a database and of course FTP.

Right now I can't recommend a specific hosting service, but I can recommend one to stay away from: Mochahost! Seriously, don't even come near them. Although they're based in the USA, their customer service and tech department are outsourced to Ukraine and it consists basically of a series of pre-generated email messages that never have anything to do with your problem and rude "assistants" that struggle even with basic English and will claim that "the problem is solved" within minutes of receiving a complaint without even bothering to check it and will try to trick you into paying for features you should have access to!! Worst customer service I've ever experienced in my whole life.

To be honest unless you plan on using something that specifically requires a windows based server then I would avoid windows hosting and stick with Linux hosting.

Never heard of Namesco so cant comment on them but I am familiar with 1&1 and would say avoid them for hosting like the plague.

For domain registrations I use UKReg for .co.uk domain names and Namecheap for my .com domain names.

For hosting I use HostGator, have used them for years and they are very reliable and support is top notch
 
I dont see the difference etween windows and linux this s where i need help so i dont get confused.........
 
As Keith W said simpler to stick with Linux hosting.

I would say to make sure it supports CSS and PHP in case you later decide to go with with server side processing.

And of course FTP which makes uploading files to the site much easier than the usual control panel.

Those I would say are the three things to look out for - most companies will offer these usually along with MySql for database creation - but that is probably not necessary for you as it's quite advanced.

Frankly I tried using Dreamweaver years ago but found the learning curve so steep and the product so expensive (about £400 if I remember although there are student and teacher versions much cheaper) and the code it produced so bloated that I simply went back to hand coding.

I don't know what it's like now but I know most books on it are priced from about £10-£30 pounds.

Check Amazon for the items and the purchasers reviews of the subject.

One server runs on windows software

One server runs on Linux software

Linux is more versatile, more software/programs work better natively on Linux, some software/programs will only work on Linux

Lots of software/programs used in the hosting world do not work very well on a windows server if at all.

As I said unless you intend on using something that specifically needs windows hosting then don't use it and go with Linux - and not meaning to be rude but that fact that you have asked the difference I would say it is a safe bet that you will not need a windows based box for your hosting

I heard this company recommended on here a coupe of years ago (apologies whoever it was!). And have found them very professional. A freephone number to speak to a human (very knowledgable and patient), here in the UK.

I used to be with 1and1 who are not easy to deal with. You need a good deal of patience to find the answer to your questions on their site too. But everyone's experience is going to be different.

Ok, so i want to design a website completely from scratch using dream weaver.
I used 1and1 to purchase domains and have set up my email. Why is there hosting so bad......... This is all very confusing to me :-s

TBH Gregory, as far as you're concerned, nothing - the advantages that windows hosting can give are things you will not need since you're just starting in putting up a website.

Just go for Linux as the cheapest option.

No you don't. That is the least efficient way possible to design a website.

What you want to do is decide what you want your website to do, choose a suitable CMS with appropriate plugins for it and then customise the look and feel through some work in CSS and possibly php/perl/whatever language your website is designed in.

Well as Blue Max said everyone's experience with companies can be different.

If you've already purchased your domains and set up e-mails then it really is a bit late to ask that question.

So it's a case of go on from there and see how you get on with them.

Linux hosting has nothing do do with what use as an operating system on your computer

You can use a windows based machine to design and build your website, you would then upload that website to your hosting space

Can I respectfully suggest that you go and do some background reading into web servers, sites, hosting and how they all work together before asking questions. If you don't understand how they all interact, you have no chance of designing a functioning and maintainable website....

Linux web hosting and your PC running Windows 7 are two completely different things and there will be no conflict between the two.

A great deal of the sites you visit daily will all be hosted on Linux servers with no problems at all.

After all if there were such problems then where would MAC users be?

Ok i thought or rather presumed that i would need to have linux software.....

What programs will i use then build it on linux, maybe i should stick to clickpic.........

Far too technical Arad for a beginner to website creation.

It really isn't as bad as it may seem Gregory - just get a simple book about websites and how they work and gradually work through it.

Or just go into W.H.Smiths - they have usually got a plethora of mags about just this thing.

Or simply Google "Web Site Creation" etc and go from there.

No bad as such. The problem is the difficulties in changing a package. You find it much, much easier to buy more packages. Downgrading is not so simple! And they spam you to hell.

And I hate there automated accounts. But as has also been said, it's done now, so hope you have a positive experience (I'm sure they must have improved over the couple of years since I left - something else to consider when people knock companies).

Dreamweaver is an expensive package and also has a learning curve. If you are starting from scratch, just try something like wordpress and see how you get on.

Wh smiths in the morning then! To use Wordpress do i not need a Wordpress site? I guess the hosting is a blank space and i can put what i want on ther???
