Website & gallery at last...thoughts?

  Thanks Adam - i have saved your whole post and next week when our guest has left, going to have a play. I really do need to take my web building abilities further, and whilst I appreciate there are plenty of hosting packages specifically for photographers, I prefer the lot to be my work [ok, I cant afford it to be anything else] so advice like yours is invaluable and very much appreciated.

Pete - given you appear to have quite a following on here then you should, in my humble opinion, moderate your views or, at least, advise when and when not to do something. To criticise thinking and suggestions after the event is either disingenuous or duplicitious....... Come on - share your wisdom ;)

:gag: <<< my face did that when i read that :(

I'm very lost. I don't see what the issue is here. Someone mentioned putting a guestbook on a site, I advised against it and listed the reasons. I knew someone would popup and point out the comment system on my site but since I didn't want to bring that into the discussion. I didn't want it to confuse the issue. Whether people like my photography or not shouldn't be an issue. This has all gone very weird.

In summary...

Guestbook on portfolio site = no no
Comments on a blog = yes yes

They are not the same.

Oh. Don't forget the japanese bonsai monkeys though.

sorry guys - my mistake. I thought my point was obvious and relaitvely clear - if not, I'm sure you can dicuss it maturely on IRC in the usual fashion :D

That was a correctly placed smiley. Was it?

uhuh
well done boy, keep the ranks square

Come on Dan - make an effort...........

sorry guys - my mistake. I htought my point was obvious and realitvely clear

Yeah as did I. So I'm helpful, don't try to confuse the issue and you've got an issue because I was being deceptive? Riiiight. :bang:

hah Divine! was waiting for someone to do that!

Jonny, I am neutral matey!

I just have an urge to spam. (spooge?)

Marik made me do it

A little off topic there :) I think divine summed it up nicely though.

Professional portfolio != place for "OMG I luv ur photies!"
Blog = the place

You lie! I only visited becuase of you! Now I'm leaving!

Sorry if I caused any hassle :(

OK - overly complicated things again. I have a habit of doing that. Suggest you drop down a few posts and try again. There's an online thesaurus........... :D

Sorry .... This is all my fault.

Had I have read the original post and seen that Adam was turning pro then I would not have suggested a guestbook.

All friends again

Adam - sorry dude. Dan says he's going to troll other threads now. Sorry to bring yours down mate.

Hold on. ...../

Ad - i love it!! I just wish i could click on pics from the home page for a better view. Really; my only criticism. Very smooth.

Thanks mate, I will put some links from those cover images to the gallery, or some such. ... Hacking my thread is just fine mate. ;)

So my decision to use the comments boxes under each of my images to offer some info about the subject or historical interest to a particular image (not all of them) that’s acceptable then yes?

I'm loving the way you guys keep referring to my site, and me, as a professional tog ha-ha ...loving it. Keep it up fellas.

..... / ..and carry on. :D

It depends on the context really. I probably should have asked at the start, who is your target market? I guess you can edit the comments if you get particularly stupid ones. As I said, I have 2 sites for 2 different markets. One allows comments, one doesn't. You could turn off the comment system which would mean that if people want to comment they'll email you. If they really do like your work they will too.

Its intended as a sales site Pete, but also it will second as a gallery of my work...the bog will be separate and will allow people to comment, I guess that’s part of the point of a blog, not just to offer interesting shots and articles but to chat as well... not sure really but I plan to make it more of articles of interest type blog, rather than a place for people to say nice things, or not, on my work ... I can use this place for that, .... Where I understand people and their strange ways etc.

I may well turn off the comment system, easy solution that, lol... or just keep people out so that only my in comment shows. Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I think then, if its a sales site, you don't need comments on each photo to show that others think its good. People will buy what they like. Don't over-complicate things with different fonts, or colours or lots of this n that. Keep it simple. If you have a portfolio side, and also a blog then people can comment on the blog leaving the portfolio looking clean and tidy.

Adam - I really like the design of the site, I love the colours and the slideshow and the images look very, very good.

If I were to change it I would cut back on the text. I only read it because it's your site, normally I would completely ignore it. I would like to see a lot less text on the front page and let the photos speak for themselves (which they do very well). Do you really need to be told that to buy a photo you press the buy button? I would personally go even further and remove a lot of the album information under each image in the gallery.

I agree with Pete about the guestbook, they are often nothing but a Spam magnet. Once you have a load of e-mails from happy punters telling you how the 60" framed print is pride of place in their warehouse loft you can take some quotes and put them on the site!

All the above is, of course, nothing but my own opinion and, as such, I advice you to ignore it.

I've used this template a few times years ago to get my head around it all... its built to show you how it’s built.
Thanks for that link, I've been working through "css in 90 minutes" for the last three months.

I like the look of the site, nice and pro looking :)

Thanks for confirming Pete.
