Hi,

I'd really like some feedback/C&C on my website (Not yet complete - ie still in beta!).

www.martinpawlett.co.uk

I wanted a very clean minimal look, hence the white, rather than black background. The website is really somewhere to display my images, in order to show prospective clients my work. Photography is currently a hobby, and I have no ambitions to change this yet.

The site is built in wordpress, and my editing skills aren't the best - so a lot of the editing is trial and error. The website looks different in IE, Chrome and Firefox (The logo spacing to be exact), and I'm not sure how to go about getting it looking the same no matter what browser.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

thanks for looking
Martin

Hi Martin,

I like the simple layout - the only thing I'm not sure about is the addition click to get into the thumbs of your images ([Show picture list]).

Maybe a personal thing, but I would expect to go to thumbnails when clicking on the different sections along the top.

Tags and stuff look good inside, so well done, a good, simple website.

Hi. In my browzar your logo gets obscured by the nav bar. Also, when mousing over the nav bar, they sort of grow larger at the bottom. While I like the white bg color, perhaps a color version of your logo might work? Otherwise it looks like its completely mono.
Nice shots, but agree about the thumbnails. Try Lightbox?

Hi Martin, i'm a little confused as in your post you say photography is a hobby and you have no ambition to change that, yet you want a website to show your work to potential clients. Also your about me page clearly comes across as someone who is looking to be hired as a photographer.
So is this to be an amateur/hobby site or a site to display your work as a pro.
As a hobby site it's fine but for a pro site i think it needs work.
I found that every time i click on a section i'm presented with 1 image which after a few seconds turns into a slide show now i waited this time but normally i'd see one image and say "is that it" and click away so i do think you should have all your images in each section on display straight away with the option to enlarge or go slideshow should the viewer choose. Don't mean to sound picky thats just my thoughts, hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments, I've changed the nextgen gallery to show the thumbs first.

I'll have a think about the logo colour, as yes I do agree it looks a bit mono!

Hi Chris, it is a hobby at the moment, and as I said I have no plans to change - but friends are asking me to do some work for them and I wanted to have a site to show off my potential images. As and when I do work for friends/family etc I'll add the images to this site. Sorry I may have confused by saying clients, instead of friends/family etc.

I have no plans to give up my full time job and turn pro yet as I'm noweher near that level with my photography.

"martin pawlett | photography", add margin-bottom about 20px. lighten the grey on "photography", its nearly the same as black.

move "Home Welcome to Martin Pawlett Photography." above the image. (or delete it, I would if I was you.)

Add new button for "About". Align each button's content to center.

Dont like the red colour, maybe you can darken the red?

Thanks Dean. I'll edit the logo later tonight.

I've deleted the welcome text, but can't work out how to delete the red home post link in wordpress, bear with me while I keep trying! (I love wordpress, but at the same time I hate it!)....

which program you used to edit? its recommended to use dreamweaver or notepad. :)

I currently use notepad, but have downloaded a trial of Dreamwearver CS5 last night - however I'm no graphic or website designer - hence the trial and error approach!

I'll google "how to edit a wordpress site in dreamweaver" later tonight.

notepad may be a bit hard for you, dreamweaver would be a start. have fun :)

Remember that Wordpress calls files from different locations when you're editing, so you need to make sure you find the right one if you're editing content. If you're editing the design, it will be in the wp-content/themes/YOUR-THEME directory, usually called stylesheet.css

At a guess, it will be in the themes single.php file, but don't quote me on that - the theme files are *usually* quite well documented.

I always find Word Pad better than Note Pad.

I like this site, Its nice, simple and easy to navigate. The only thing I noticed was sort your permalinks out. Google can't follow default links featuring a '?'. It may also be worth adding a form for contact. The contact form 7 plug in works well

Thanks Hugh, I opted for ther default permalink option in wordpress.

The only other options I have are;

Common
Default : http://www.martinpawlett.co.uk/?p=123
Day and name http://www.martinpawlett.co.uk/2010/10/25/sample-post/
Month and name http://www.martinpawlett.co.uk/2010/10/sample-post/
Numeric http://www.martinpawlett.co.uk/archives/123

Optional
Quote.....If you like, you may enter custom structures for your category and tag URLs here. For example, using topics as your category base would make your category links like http://example.org/topics/uncategorized/. If you leave these blank the defaults will be used.
Category base
Tag base

What would be the best option for me?

thanks
Martin

Mine uses month and name - it seems to work and gives a permanent page structure to crawl

I don't intend on using it as a blog, more of a gallery of images.

The f8 lite theme I use allows you to create pages - which is how I've created the site. I'll create a backup of the entire site, and have a play with the different options, but the month/name or postname options sound good!
