Hi

Just been reading the sticky thread re building a website and looks very informative, perhaps someone could offer some specific advice.

My friend who has set up on his own as a joiner wants his own website / webpage. He is with 'madasafish' and gets a domain name and webspace supplied, but neither of us have done anything like this and don't really know where to start.

Which free web building sofware is the best to use and is it easy to transfer / upload to his madasafish webspace. I think he has 100MB - which I presume isn't huge and so will limit what he can do, but he is more than happy to have this as a front page with a few images and descriptions / contact information / information on and hopefully put links there to view his catalogue of photos (say on flickr) - is this possible ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance:thumbs:

I'd have a look at Wordpress, it is more a blogging platform, but dead easy to set up and edit content.

i prefer to joomla to wordpress as the availabel templates seem to offer more options to customisation.

I would make sure that your web space can handle Wordpress or Joomla before looking too deeply into them, A lot of companies that give web space as part of a internet package don't have access to mysql databases etc.

Cheers
Ian

i use a hosting company called rochen that includes a setup file for all sort of template sites, like joomla wordpress, nuke etc. so make the setup a lot simpler for a starter.

Cheers Ian, I seem to remember he has a 100mb - is this enough do you think ?

Sorry madasafish dont support PHP

Cheers Ross, whats PHP  like I said, I'm new to this

If you want to do it properly get a text editor, line Notepad or Notepad++ and this;

http://w3schools.com/

Or if you want an easier time look at Kompozer which is a free web site making tool.

http://www.kompozer.net/

If you don't have Photoshop or similar, you can use GIMP to do the buttons etc.

Cheers, have photoshop elements 8 ? would that be any help ?

Thanks, he already has a domain name and the web space, but I will have a word with him as it might be easier to go down this route.
