After spending most the day getting all but nowhere with Wordpress, I've conceded. I absolutely hate giving up, but I just can't get anywhere at all.

So, could someone recommend web building software I could use?

Wordpress...

Seriously. Stick at it.

I tried Dreamweaver years ago but it gave hugely bloated code and I, at least, found it extremely difficult to use.

In the end I just learned to hand code - for me much easier and my code is very compact (at least I think so).

.

Why not use simple website builder software from 1&1 or similar.

I already have the domain and space sorted.

I'm going to have a bash with Dreamweaver (I used this about 10 years ago). So I'll see how it goes. I could try with a template to see how it goes.

Wow you're brave trying Dreamweaver over Wordpress!

I just can't get anywhere. I've had another go today and I'm only looking a simple set up.

How far have you got? Do you realise that the front page can be static or a list of Posts? The latter is the classic blog setup

Do you know that Pages are static and don't have tags or categories and Posts are dynamic, have tags, categories & etc and are ordered chronologically?

Menus, etc depend on the Theme you are using

Try building a site using the TwentyTwelve Theme as it will be quick & easy. Put up a few fake Posts and a few Pages (About Me, Contact, etc) and get a feel for how Wordpress works. Worry about Themes, images & etc later

Try Coffee Cup. I've used them all over the years and now stuck with that for over ten years now.

Once bought, usually around £35, you have it for life including all updates.

TBH though if you can't master Wordpress then forget about making a decent website and get someone to do it for you.

I have to admit, I've never got on with Wordpress but Dreamweaver is pretty easy. I use its interface for speed and then handcode any of the more specific stuff. There's loads of help out there for it.

As I hate giving up, I sat up til 4am this morning trying to get some Dreamweaver basics and trying another Wordpress theme. I couldn't find a Twenty Twelve, but there was the Twenty Eleven and I tried that.

So far so good, basic pages set with no duplicates!

Hi. Get NVU, free to download, works on PC and Mac. Not as sophisticated as Dreamweaver, not sure what code it generates but its not bad - friends have used it and created 'reasonable' looking sites from it. Dreamweaver 'might' have generated too much code once upon a time but not these days. just stay away from anything vaguely Microsoft.
I use dreamweaver or hand code. If you're really struggling, try a template site like 1&1 and do it that way.

Well I took the route suggested by Nicholas and I've began to get somewhere. Long way to go, but at least I'm getting somewhere.

Thanks for the help and advice.
