I've took the plunge and decided to create a website.

My question is .com or .co.uk?

I've registered both domains so that I can link one into the other to maximise coverage but which would it be better to advertise, and why?

I like the idea of promoting the fact that I'm UK based but wanted to appeal to the worldwide audience too.

Your thoughts appreciated.

Gary :)

Hi Gary,
I run a few domains, both .co.uk & .com
I have run tests where I had 2 sites 100% the same, 1 .co.uk and the other .com.
The difference, b****r all.

From a customer point of view, most of my UK based orders came from the .co.uk address and most USA/International orders came from .com

In short, if your market is in the UK, .co.uk is the best way forward.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for that, at least I've covered both bases and on your experience maybe the right thing to do.

Im leaning towards the .co.uk so I can go ahead now and start designing the logo's etc.

Cheers

It's not a bad idea to own both. I agree though, if there's no reason not to, use the .co.uk.

There are so many other options these days, why limit yourself??

Lol, because I dont quite feel like the 'International Man of Mystery' just yet :D

Unless you're going to have dynamic branding, I wouldn't bother mentioning the .co.uk or .com element within the actual website itself. That way people can make their own mind up about the nationality if they come in from a .com angle, and will probably already know if it's from the .co.uk route.

One peice of website advice which I think a lot of people should listen too......

Pay for hosting so you dont get ads on your site! Hosting isnt expensive, www.brinkster.com host for about £40 a year.

Adverts on sites screams amateur

Thanks guys. I already have free hosting due to my self employed net expert son (clever little s**t).

Breaker, the website will be constructed with just the name so no worries.

I'm still amazed that I managed to get the site as most common names have already been snaffled. I have been waiting a while for 'Light Arted' but it seems to be tied up in red tape so I sort of stumbled across the final choice (dont think I can name it here due to forum rules but I'll pop a link in my profile)

Gary :)
