Webiste hosting £10 a month - Cheap/expensive?

HI All - I have a website based on Wordpress that a friend of a friend designed and set up for me. I don't need to have this at the top of any search engines etc but he is quoting £10 per month to host. Does this sounds about right or too expensive/cheap? :shrug:

On the expensive side I would say. My first year's hosting with dreamhost, which does wordpress one click installs, cost 3.50 a month. That was with a new customer discount. Next year it'll go up to the standard rate of $8.95 which is around £5.50 a month.

Although it does depend if support is included, and the level of support - is he going to update the site, add new functionality (if needed) etc as part of the deal?

Actually if the £10 a month includes the design and build then its very cheap, thinking about it.

It completely depends on what you are getting for your £10 to be honest. Hard to say if it is cheap or expensive with no extra details.

The price is purely just to host the site, although as he's a "friend" I can normally contact him if there are any problems etc. I have already paid a lump sum for him to design and set up the site. That's now done so just the monthly hosting now.
I upload my own images and deal with spam etc myself. There are no provisions for adding anything to the site etc.

Do you need any more info? I'm no expert on WWW. :thinking:

Also, how easy is it to change from one host to another?

Why isn't it feasible ?

Most web hosting servers are vastly under-used. In tests across our datacentre we've found that at any given time, about 75% of our hardware is being used less than 25% of its maximum capacity.

read the T&C's and tell me why

Depends what is included, I pay £20 a month for premium quality UK hosting I've not had any downtime or slowness yet.

It's easy to swap hosts if you know what you are doing.
Remember most hosts will do just that ... host ... they won't help you with your site and if you have a 'friend' who designed the site and is able to host it as well that may be a bonus if it comes to any problems - is £10 a month worth the possible bonus?
You will always find cheaper, even free ... but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
 
There's cheaper hosting and there's more expensive hosting. You won't know whether you're getting good value for money until things start going wrong because it's usually the case that hosting costs go to invest on things 'under the hood' like server maintenance, monitoring, back-ups, clustering/redundancy, customer support.

The best you can hope for is that any issues are dealt with seamlessly with no visible impact to you/your website/its visitors. If you start seeing prolonged slow response or unacceptable levels of downtime of any of the services then it's time to re-evaluate.

If response times/downtime is of a concern (as it should be with any business-critical website) then you should consider third party monitoring offering multiple locations. The likes of SiteUptime offer a free, basic level of monitoring which may be more suited to less critical operations.

Not definitely at all. Most likely the OP hasn't been supplied with the full details of what they are getting for their money.

There's not been enough information provided in this thread to draw any reasonable conclusions about the host.

Because it isn't possible for anyone to supply unlimited anything ... you may well find that you don't use enough to cause an issue but believe me as soon as you tried to run Google, Yahoo or eBay on their server you would come unstuck!

Sorry, but there's really no useful information on their website at all apart from notification of a prolonged outage (which ironically speaks volumes). As someone with no inside connection (as you have), I would be weary. There's no mention of them on WebHostingTalk.com (one of the main hosting industry haunts), no obvious user reviews to be found on Google and nothing useful comes up on archive.org either.

They appear to only operate one server which suggests it's not a mature hosting operation.

As such, it appears as though it's not possible to determine exactly what you're getting for your money.

If it were me, I'd be off looking at UK-based hosts with UK-based servers instead.

You really think a webhost would spend £1000's for somebody paying 5quid a month to upgrade their servers?

In the real world i rather think they would just slap a fair usage policy on you.

They say unlimited because they think nobody will push the boundaries, if you did they wouldn't honour it guaranteed.

Otherwise google, facebook etc would have a running cost of 10£ a month.

Sorry whats the point? you posted saying comany X is unlimited and even quoted them.. I and others say they are not unlimited.. Now your saying you dont have enough content to test it.. Your not suggesting that because you can't test then they must be unlimited are you?

what would this company do if youtube took them up on there offer... moved hundreds of thousands of videos on and the traffic/data transfer they get.. they would soon regret the unlimted lies they are spouting :)

Are you really that naive or are you just making conversation?
Do you really think that they would put dozens of servers online for your £20 a month hosting?
Unlimited is not possible for the hosting company because of the cost, they cannot obtain extra bandwidth without increased charges and as soon as that happens your 'unlimited' package hits the fence.

The magic words 'In the real world' yes in the real world a normal user like the OP or me can expect a 'Unlimitted' service . And in the real world copanies like ebay, facebook, google etc would not be running on a hosting servicecosting a fiver a month ;)

No I'm saying the service offered is unlimited as stated on the advert - :thinking: please show me where there are any limitation's on the service offered that suggest this is not so :shrug: or quantify why you think its not a unlimited service.

As long as they can keep up with my bandwidth / storage / processing requirements they are providing me with a 'unlimited' service as per their advert.

But the advert is still a lie.. just because you dont find out its a lie doesnt mean it isn't... If i tell you my names fred when its not.. and you never find out.. does that mean its not a lie?

Sorry but you dont seem to want to understand how a web hosting company can NOT guarantee unlimted service..Just because you cant put it to the test you seem to think its then truth.. it isn't.. they can not offer unlimted service...
