I am looking to start a blog for my personal photography and am now looking for hosting.

This will be a kind of trial run for my business site when I get it off the ground. That way it won't matter too much if I mess up and have to spend time getting it to look good.

Requirements:

Cheap
easy to use
wordpress friendly
idiot proof
reasonable amount of webspace and traffic (no idea how much I need)

So far I have looked at 123-reg (my domain name is registered with them) but seem very limited on space and traffic at the cheaper end. Justhost.com look like they give you the earth for next to nothing but have really terrible reviews so I'm steering clear of them.

Any recommendations?

This is going to be a very steep learning curve I think.

ones to avoid are streamline, bigdaddy & dataflame..

http://www.qiq.co.uk i have been told are good from the hexus.net fourms from several people and they often have special offers on, i got so sick of the 3 i named and shamed i moved all my stuff onto a couple of dedicated servers i maintain for the games company i work for at night.

at least then i only have myself to blame for downtime :)

I've had a quick look at the two that you have recommended.

eukhost seems to fit the bill if I go for the biggest package in the cpanel section.

Which brings the next question - what is the difference between cpanel and windows based hosting? I assume that these are the programmes to manage your hosting package and I will still design my site using wordpress, joomla or similar?

I am a complete novice at all this and will be after lots of guidance.

windowz or lunix and control panel is standard nowdays.
 
Linux seems to be the favourite when it comes to Wordpress, although I'd suspect it'd work OK on Windows too..

cPanel is a good hosting tool, and offers fantastico as well which does one click installs for Wordpress :)

It's really a bit of a misnomer, cPanel runs on Linux (the Windows version is called Enkompass). cPanel is the most widely used hosting control panel, but that is exactly what it is, a control panel. It allows you to control your hosting account, add e-mail accounts, install software and do some other fancy things which you probably wouldn't ever use.

Windows hosting is, as the name suggests, run on a Windows Server operating system. It works in a different way, but the result is exactly the same. The actual method of controlling your hosting may differ, the host may use Enkompass, Plesk or any multitude of control panels for your hosting.

I would look for Linux (cPanel) hosting as you will find it's cheaper. Windows hosting is designed for Microsoft applications like Active Server Page, .NET and Microsoft SQL and since you are planning on running Wordpress, you won't need any of those.

I was with Host Gator, as I used them for years back in early 2000.

I had bad speeds with them this time around, and have just switched TSO Host, as many seem to be with them here.

No problems as of yet and the speed has been great.
 
I use byethost, doesn't seem too bad, reasonable price too.

Next question - can I register a domain name with 123-reg and then set up my site with eukhost?

The reason is that the domain name is half the price with 123-reg.

yes you can, i use 123 for domains and run my own nameservers and dns
 
I use http://www.aventurehost.com/ and i've not had a problem with them. THe only problems have been with me forgetting passwords or asking something technical. All times they've been quick to reply to their support emails.

I have just ordered my new domain name. I had already purchased my surname which is what I use for email. I thought it may be better to have my first and last name.co.uk for the blog.

Once that is registered then I'll get the hosting paid for.

Then the adventure begins :lol:

Thanks for al the help and advice folks.

I have now set one up with fasthostingdirect.co.uk. £20 a year with unlimited webspace and traffic. I saw it recommended on another thread.

My blog is now here. Very much a work in progress but not too bad for a couple of hours last night and this morning.
