Web Page Layout: Scrolling downwards.

Hi Guys,

Sucks you can't add polls to this thing, wanted a straight yes or no, and then a count. But anyway...

Do you think its a bad idea to force people to scroll down in a web page to view all of a photo gallery? I am definately not happy with my Scottish Snaps site, and rather than continue to upload to it, I am going to nail the layout and usability first.

If I for example have 10 shots per gallary page, perhapsd 500 wide, and 200 or so high, it will mean quite a bit of scrolling. Click for larger etc will still work.

My flickr layout is very similar to what I am thinking in terms of image size etc:

As long as each image fits on screen I don't have a problem with it, that's what the wheel on my mouse is for :thumbs:
 
If you can do it dynamically, then it's nice to let people make the choice for themselves. View One/View All type thing. When I do websites with search results I'll hard code the initial result to display only enough to keep the entire site on screen without any scrolling, but have a link or drop down menu to allow them to see more or less results per page....

how do you know where the fold is for the user? What if they use a bigger or smaller monitor, or different resolution, or a different size browser?

To build a page without any scrolling for yourself doesn't mean everyone else doesn't scroll..

True, if I want a no scrolling site, I normally pretend anyone on 800 x 600 doesn't exist. Which is stupid, but my web stats show hardly anyone below 1024, and most people on 1280 +
 
thumbnail page instead maybe, and make it 9 rather then 10 a page and they dont have to be tiny either? :shrug:

scrolling doesnt bother me [though I am aware many dont seem to want to bother] but I do want the full size image to fit my screen without scrolling.


edit: jalbum has a facility so you can set each image to auto resize depending on users screen res, but frankly I find the flicker as it resets more annoying than scrolling.

I am not a fan of thumbnails I must admit, I like to be able to get a proper feel for a photo on first glance, as opposed to after a click. 500 wide is what I would really consider the smallest a shot should be. All personal preference though.

I've just ditched my flash based site and gone back to basic HTML, not a thumb nail or flash in sight. There's still not a lot of content uploaded but you get the basic idea, click through the images then scroll through the images on the page.
 
id say scroll down would be fine, every other site makes you scroll so it wouldnt be that much of a hardship, as long as they fir the screen widthways, it would work. too much clicking will put people off though.
 
scrolling downwards is not so much of a problem nowadays. scrolling sideways is a big no in the web world...so is too much clicking as already mentioned. people want information readily there, if they have to click on several links to get it, they wont be interested and will click that nice big red x in the top right corner..

I run my screen resolution in 1920x1200 so I dont get affected much by sideways scrolling, and use a microsoft scrolling mouse so dont even think about scrolling.
You have to do it so much nowadays with forums, ebay etc. that i dont think its an issue.
