Right due to problems i had which are documented in a previous post, thank you to arad85, Robertp and others, i think its time to change web hosts. Right now i'm with yorhost(webmania) and due to problems contacting them by phone and e-mail i will not be renewing with them in January.
Who would you recomend? I'm looking for a reliable company that can be contacted easily if there is a problem and has fast servers.
Interested in who you use.
What are the pitfalls,if any, on changing hosts. Never done this before and am not the sharpest tool in the box as far as knowing about settings etc.

1 and 1 are very good - we've had no problems with them at work.

For out and out cheapness, I've also used 'One'

I'm with unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk. They have 24/7 tech support (I've been mailing them at 2am before now and they've responded quickly), you can run multiple domains from a single account. Generally, they are quite fast, once the pages are loaded into the cache. If your website hasn't been used for a while first page loads can be a bit slow. Cost £3.30 inc VAT a month, min 1 month contract so easy to move if you want.

If you want to see what a real website is like on their servers have a look around http://www.alltheprettythings.co.uk (Ms arad85's site and yes, the product photography is mine....). This runs a php website with all the data from a MySQL server.

I look after three sites hosted by 34SP - all three are on the first rung of their Pro Hosting package which is exceedingly well featured and a real bargain.
One of my websites has been with them nearly 10 years. All my support emails have been handled fast and efficiently, even on a Sunday afternoon.
Highly recommended.

Hostgator are top class and the support is second to none however there is a price to pay for such good service but when it comes to hosting you get what you pay for really.

Hope that helps also how was your site built? So I can advise on moving servers.

Mine is with One.com.

They have replied quickly when I've needed to contact them and they are cheap.

Just occasionally it seems like the server goes to sleep and takes a few seconds to wake up but after that its OK. Think I've got about 3Gb for around £20 a year. Seems they have a first year free deal now.

FTP seems to always work fast and first time.

They used to only have safe mode PHP but that is off now. One day I'll upgrade my neglected gallery to a newer version. Old one was the only one I could find for safe mode on.

I have previously had trouble with 1 & 1, but since moving to TSOhost after lots of recommendations on here I haven't had any and whenever I have needed to speak to them I have been able to speak to someone in the UK.

It seems there are a lot of good recomendations out there. Not one duplication of companies. Thanks to all that have replied in this thread.
I think i am going to go down the road of building a new website and will take the recomendations on board about the hosting.
Not one recomendation for yorhost/webmania though:thinking: I wonder why? I e-mailed them with the problem i had on Monday evening, still awaiting a reply. Great customer service, not. Even their phone is continually on answerphone asking to e-mail their relevant depts.

@ Happy Snapper sorry i havent a clue how the site was built, but to change anything on it i use dreamweaver and photoshop if thats any help. I know it is a very basic site, no codes etc, but that was to make it easy for me to change things if needed.

Thanks once again.

Should be a simple case of moving files then in that case. If your looking at building a new site I would look into wordpress it's very simple to use and has some good plugins for seo galleries ect.

As a web designer myself, I suggest using hostgator. I've been using them for years and never had a single problem, 99,9% uptime and the support is top notch, their servers are also secured and up to date so there's nothing to worry about except if you're doing something shady.

TSOhost.

UK based servers, excellent support, amazingly fast upgrades on request..

:eek::eek:
That will teach me to read the posts more thoroughly.
Thanks for pointing it out neil_g

Thanks Gary

bjnadal thanks, what do you mean by shady ?

Another recommendation for 1 and 1 from me. Used them for years with no issues.

I use 1and1, don't have any issues with the online service. Only problem I have had over the year is paying through Direct Debit. It doesn't take payments so have had to use alternate payment schedule

Interesting subject, keeping an eye on this one...

UKFast are quite good. Might be a bit pricey but they do have excellent support. Depends on your budget and your expected traffic to the website i suppose.

I moved to Vidahost last year. Really excellent service (pre-sales and after-sales) and good prices as well.

another vote for vidahost. Can't speak highly enough of their customer service and the other thing to mention - my site now runs several times quicker

Two host were good when I used them in the past. Prices were good too with decent packages.
