im looking at possibly doing a course on website design now ics seem to do a course pay monthly at £50 which is very good but i have never used them is there any other courses any one would recomend would like to learn to use cs3 or even cs4 dreamweaver but not essential

I had a friend who took one of these courses with the 'promise' of gaurenteed work if you finished the course. However her last assignment was to build a shopping cart with no guidance at all, a complete con. Good job I own a web development company she came into the office and we showed her how to do it! her tutor was somewhat surprised that someone managed to finish the course, needless to say she got her money back!!

Just be very, very carefull on the course you decide to take and if possible speak to someone who has already done it and get their take on it. I would really suggest approaching a local web company and see if you can't work something out with them.

the problem i have is i work 6 days a week so a course on a night time would be ideal im not looking to make a living doing this i have a very basic knowledge of webdesign and want to advance on this and get a better understanding of designing

was the course problem with ics learn matt or a diffren company

Be very careful on booking any distant learning courses , I left a job as a
electrical/mechanical engineer of 12 years . A guy comes down to my house
and says because of being of an engineering background a Mcse course would suit me better and that when i have passed i will be looking at 40 k a year what a load of *******s , Trying to get a job in the I.T Industry with just a qualification and no experience is sum what impossible. It was 3 grand for the course the most expensive they had to offer. I lost interest in about 6 months .
Go with your interest whatever you enjoy you will find things to learn a great deal easier.

I took on web design myself got the books and downloaded the ebooks far more cheaper than paying
some guy on the end of the phone

i enjoy the web design side of things but once i have been shown how to normally it sticks in the brain and im ok but it is having the knowledge there in the 1st place

im not looking to make full time employment out of this but more for my future when my dad retires he has 2 buisnesses im currently working on one but not 100% happy with the design side of things and would rather build it from scratch then one of thoses easy design template things as i find alot is missing when adding html my current one if i try to edit it according to the site i have no header at all

There is plenty of knowledge/ material for you on flebay very cheap .
When you got on with the web design look further afield at the SEO side
of things . This is what will make your business ££££.

Building webpages is fairly easy (and there are loads of tools available that make it even easier) having the eye/inspiration for a design is trickier and not really what you would get taught.

Totally agree with you

of course you need to make a distinction between what is 'web design' and what is actually 'application development'. If you are going down the route of develping webapps, then this is much more involved than just a bit of html and javascript - you have database design, UI design, functional requirements etc.

web design is just the bit that the end user sees, what goes on behind the curtain can be much more complicated.

This man speaks the truth, but both are equally important - You need a good design, something relevant to the subject, eye-catching, something that will hold the viewers attention and provide a source of displaying information.

Design is a lot more creative than the development side of things, both can earn good salaries, especially if you go into the likes of asp.net and C# - I did this at university earlier this year (3rd year degree), but being the complete retard that I am, I dropped out.

I haven't done anything web design/related in months, but I'm considering starting some freelance work; brushing up on my skills and finding local businesses who need work done. Something to pay the bills!

pay monthly at £500?? That can't be correct can it?

Erm, i'd suggest you visit here:

http://headfirstlabs.com/

Buy the following books:

Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML
Head First PHP & MySQL
Head First Web Design

Buy 2 get 1 free as well.

Then download:

Notepad++
Filezilla

And get yourself some free webspace from:

http://www.000webhost.com/

That is all you need to start building web pages.

There are lots of free resources online that covers specifics of creating the graphics. Try downloading the trials of photoshop or get your self GIMP (a free photoshop rival), then when you want to do a specific thing just google "Doing X in GIMP".

There isn't really any need to pay that sort of money to do this.

Once you have the above down, look at things like Wordpress and Joomla etc.

You can even develop on your own PC using webserver emulation software like WAMP/XAMP, i prefer using http://www.pendriveapps.com/usb-webserver/ although it is more basic than the two stated.
