Good Evening!

I used to use Photoshop - right back when 5 was new. Haven't played with it all since then and only use GIMP now. Budget restraints and all :)

I'm not overly confident with creating effects, processing images etc so I tend to use Picnik, the online editor. What are peoples views on using that? If I posted up images which had been edited in Picnik, would it receive the same sort of response as an image which I'd edited myself in GIMP? And, how can I recreate those sorts of edits? Mostly with my images I like to cross process them, or black and white but slightly faded so a little colour shows through.

In GIMP I am fairly confident and understand layers, I can add and edit layer masks, I can colour pop images with layers .. just can't achieve the overall look of a picture?

Firstly I believe good composition and in-camera skills will trump post-processing a poor photo any day.


Regarding online editors you should check out www.aviary.com/ thats quite good, its probably more powerful than Picnik and has layers and many other features you'll be familiar with. Also there is www.befunky.com, though in my opinion I dont think you'll like it as much.


Not sure if I'm allowed to mention my own site? but it might useful...

If you're familiar with Lightroom/Aperture/etc and like that style of program, you might also be interested in the website in my signature - however I haven't finished it yet (its about another week away from being usable). The "presets" are disabled currently, but I do have vignetting, bleach bypass, cross-processing, b&w, etc. AND it handles RAW files - though unless you have a decent broadband connection its slow to upload RAW files.

Absolutely, 100% agree. I've only really been using the camera properly - not in auto mode - for 3 weeks (I've had it since Christmas) and since I've learned about settings, I'm much more selective about composing a picture. I suppose I've stepped away from point and shoot and although I am generally happy with my results, sometimes that processing just adds something, the mood, or just .. Something? :)

I'll check out those other websites and yours when it's ready! Thanks! So you wouldn't say that an image edited with presets is any worse / better than one which has been edited 'from scratch'?
