So,
i shot a weding dress, on a hanger, processed the images and was happy...until the wife mentioned something that got me thinking....

'The dress is beautiful, but that hanger is naff, didnt she have a nicer hanger'

Very good point i thought 'no, she didnt, its what was on the dress ' i replied

'so go and buy some in pretty styles and next time you photograph a dress swap the hanger to a nice one...its the details us women look at'

Now, as much as i want to shout FFS :bang:...i actually couldnt disagree with her.

So do you take anything to weddings as a tog that you use to improve an image, a good one would be Lacey Parasols i suppose.

Any thoughts....?

I've thought about buying a lacy parasol to use at weddings but then I thought if the bride wanted a parasol in her photos then she'll buy one. Me buying a parasol for her to use isn't going to properly document her wedding day the way she planned it.

I certainly agree with you (or rather your wife) about the hanger. I've been caught short a couple of time where the dress is on an awful hanger. I've been meaning to invest in a nice hanger for a long time. I'll definitely do it in time for next year's wedding season.

The only other accessories I take with me are things like scissors, tape, clips etc to help out when needed during bridal prep shots.

I've looked for decent hangers (maybe not hard enough) and couldn't find somethiong I was happy with.

Lots of wedding photographers carry a good hanger and white brollies in case it rains.

The few weddings I have done I have sugested to the bride that they put a nice hanger on the dress rather than a nasty primark/wire jobby. You would think that the bridal shops would be supplying better hangers considering the amount of money some brides are spending on their dresses. but I have seen a huge shift to brides finding a dress offline then going online and buying coppies from china or ebay

Interesting, if I find a hanger that looks right I will let you know. Might be a nice touch for the tog to supply a hanger with the brides name/initials shaped in it somehow so it's really personal to her. Also a token/unique/surprise gift from the tog may also just add that little something to get her Raving to her friends about what a lovely photographer you are.....,

Just a thought

Lol one quick google search brings up personalised hangers , dates, messages, heart shapes etc etc.....

I think detail shots are not an important enough part of the day to warrant even considering things like what hanger is used. Brides know what the hanger looks like, and if they cared enough they'd get a better looking one.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Won't it start to look a bit strange having the same hanger in all your dress shots? ;)

possibly, you could buy a few and rotate them...i just thought it would make a cool gift...something a little personal from the tog...probably OTT though.

i suppose if the bride has a decent hanger then its not needed so it would only be in emergency, so only once every few weddings possibly.

I don't know really hence posting the thread to garner ideas..

If it is so important, could you ask her in pre wedding meet?

Not strictly wedding related - 95% of my real estate shoots people had 2 or more light bulbs missing in their living room or kitchen main light. Sometimes that does wreck the shots...

I couldn't disagree more. GOOD wedding photography is all about paying attention to the details. It's easy to say you are a reportage wedding photographer so you shoot whatever is put in front of you but what makes a good wedding photographer brilliant is picking out those little details and making people notice them. Using a nice hanger instead of a plain one is part of that.

I did this, and a set of black umbrellas for the groomsmen as well.

It seems like a faff, and yes you would think that brides might think about the hanger - but of course they don't - because any old plastic hanger does the job of holding the dress up which is really all most of them believe they need to worry about with everything else going on. But it does spoil an image of the hanging wedding dress particularly if they are in a period house, or the wedding has a vintage theme.

Depending on your style details can be an important aspect of the final wedding images, particularly if you supply an album.

I did mention it at the pre-wedding meeting, and then always had a decent wooden hanger in the car should I need to bring it in during bridal prep.

Just part of being an experienced pro wedding photographer really.

Also depends where the dress was bought, say for instance, we had (still have in the cupboard) a Vera Wang wedding dress and as such, not only did it arrive in a silk covered box but also a diamonte hanger and protective cover etc! Things like this do add the edge to a photo and I think it's incredibly stupid for people to assume that details like this are not important, you're there to record the moment so getting it done with extra touches is always better imo. Speaking of fancy hangers, Claire's accessories do some, debenhams bridal have versions with Swarovski crystals, there's absolutely **** loads out there that are made to suit :)

i carry white brollies in case it rains. I also carry 4 fishing weights painted white. if its windy i use them to stop the dress moving when laid out. They are very easy to clone out

Good ideas guys, on Friday I wanted to get a shot of the bride in the rain against a bush adorned with fairy lights. It was only a few steps off a path but she didn't want to put her dress down on the wet grass. I really wished I had a roll of matting/ Astro turf or something as I think that could have swayed her. Possibly a bit excessive lol!

Haha yeah definitely excessive... I mean what next, carry a bucket of water with you so you can make a puddle and get a great reflection shot? ;)

Book richer brides. Better dresses = better hangers :)

Not always, obvs. I have a black satin one in the boot just in case.

Re the white umbrellas - I had some brollies made with my logo on once. They looked nice. They all got nicked. Very very few dresses are white so white isn't always a good colour. I got a nicely shaped one (copy of a Danish designer who was all the rage for a week or so) but it's actually too yellowy. I'll just stick to the one I nicked from a solicitors and 'shop out the logo.

I'm going to be making a nice hand painted Thank You sign. Well, probably a few in different style. That should make it easier selling Thank you cards.

Lol that blogs great, some cracking comments on the images.

why would you do a shot the bride didn't want to do ? - its about documenting her day , not augmenting your portfolio.

If she didn't want to go on the grass I wouldn't even discuss it further. If she was saying "oh I really want to go stand against that bush but i'm worried about my dress" that would be different. ( I did one once where the bride had to stand on a tea tray from the hotel to stop her shoe heels sinking in - but that was her choice)

Pete,

It wasnt about going against the brides wishes. We had discussed shots/ideas before the wedding and whilst she, and the groom, liked the idea the reality was different. I offered the option, she declined due to not wanting to get the dress in the wet grass. If i had a solution / option for her so it worked out and she was happy then whats the issue.....

the day was documented, dancing had begun, we were chatting, she ummed and ahhed then decided not to so we did some indoor stuff...which she enjoyed..

Anyways, this isnt what the thread is about so back to the original..light hearted questions...
