WD Velociraptor vs SSD

Hi gang

I've currently got a 250Gb WD Velociraptor drive with my OS and software on it (All data on a different HDD) and it's recently started clicking at random times, never linked to any hikes in performance.
As a result I'm looking to replace it as I would rather it didn't fail on me while I'm doing my MSc.

I was looking into the Samsung 840 and the 840 Pro, has anyone used these and a Velociraptor drive, did you see a significant speed improvement?

Any advice is much appreciated

SSD will blow even a VR out the water.

if you can afford it get the biggest 840 PRO you can afford.

Would i be able to clone my VR drive onto a SSD without having to reinstall any software?

youll need to partition the VR so that the clone will fit, but yes. the samsungs come with some software that will make the necessary system changes.

you may want to enable AHCI if you have not already, this can cause blue screens post windows install but there is a registry key you can update before changing the setting.

I've got an SSD installed on my 2 PCs and they make an incredible difference to a PC no matter what you have used before.

Personally though I always do a clean install no matter what as this gives you a totally fresh beginning with no hangovers.

But always remember that installing an SSD won't change the fundamental speed of your machine; the greatest change will be in any programs that involve a great deal of HDD activity.

For such an important work, why not get cloud storage in addition to regular on-site backups? Most usual suspects will provide around 5GB FoC.
As for SSD vs HDD. Not comparable. At all.

'Clicking' sound from the harddrive is almost always result of actuator not being able to find correct position for the heads. You are lucky that you know that your drive is on the way out. Buy any SSD and you'll notice huge difference from hdd.
