The 500gb version is portable (usb powered) whereas the 1tb version needs to be plugged into the mains. Portable drives tend to be more expensive per gig. Both are good prices for what they do.
 
the 500g uses 2.5'', the 1tb uses 3.5'' hard drive it's bigger, not as portable ..
 
I guess its all down to what your looking for

Both are very good value for money
 
I have about 6 or 7 of these WD drives including 2 that plug in to the mains, and I can heartily recommend them!
 
Actually, I don't think the 1TB's price is as good as the 500GB's, for those types, usually the 3.5'' with Double Storage will cost the same as the 2.5'' one :)

Good to know.

I'm pleased with the portable but am thinking of a 1TB for my backup - yes. that's convinced me, I'm away off to order now.
