Hi people, forgive my ignorance, but if I had a My Passport external hard drive or some equivalent portable hard drive.
How does it work? Do I plug the camera into the hard drive, the camera battery powers the drive, and then transfer the images across?

If that is right, super! How do I tell the camera to transfer?

Many thanks indeed for any help (y)

No, you transfer the images from the camera to the PC and then plug the Passport drive into the PC and copy the images over. Look at it as a form of copy/backup.

If you have a Canon 1DIII or 1DIV with the WFT-E2 then you can plug the passport into that and copy the files over but this option is not available on most prosumer camera bodies

What is it you want to do?

Thanks Jim, I had it in my head that I could transfer images from the camera to the portable hard drive in the field as it were, obviously not.

What camera body do you have?

No.

I can't think of any camera that can directly access a hard drive. Hard drives are normally plugged into desktop or laptop computers but @f/2.8 has provided a good suggestion for on the go backups, above.

Camera no but there are many that allow you to plug in an sd card or compact flash card and transfer directly. Like the one I linked above.

I've just been reading about these: NEXTO DI ND 2901 portable backup drive.

Could be worth further investigation.

ive had more people come to me with failed WD my passports than i care to think of.

usb port is soldered to the board too so cannot do the old "take the drive out of the box" trick.

The Canon 5DIII has two cards slots so you are better buying more cards, or one large card for backup, and then transfer files from one card to the other in camera

On the 1Ds II, I can set the camera to duplicate each write to the second slot. Can the 5D III pull that trick?

Yes, I can write to each card with a duplicate, or RAW to one and jpeg to the other, so a good option.
