WCMUT....what cheered me up today

Heard this morning that some of my images are published in a local free magazine in the Twickenham/Teddington/Hampton Hill area. We had a local photographer who used to submit a lot of photographs and she decided to retire, so the editor approached our camera club... I live in a different postcode so don't usually cross the river into Middlesexshire unless I am going to work or North Wales but was pleased to see some of my shots (taken a long time ago) being seen. We do this for free and as a bit of a recruitment drive for Rich and Twick PS.

TW Magazine (p.25-26)

We got a letter from the Gov asking us to complete a survey. I usually don't bother but Mrs WW wanted to so she did it and they gave her a £10 Amazon voucher. I did my survey and I got one too. So, Mrs WW wanted £30+ worth of organic seeds and beans off Amazon and we got £20 off :D

Interestingly the survey asked us quite different questions no doubt based on our age and sex.

What questions did they ask you about sex Alan?

They seemed rather limited actually which surprised me as civil servants are normally well experienced and even out there on the fringes in these things... or so I've read.

The survey that always tickles me is the one that appears in (IIRC) Riotous Assembly by Tom Sharpe.

Had the same yesterday and the day before but today was clear.

Being able to cancel my Sky TV.... Last year I renewed my Sky TV contract and stupidly agreed to another 24 months after negotiating the price down to £35 after I cancelled Sky Sports.... After a couple of months I realised how little I was watching Sky channels and was tending to watch the free channels most of the time, so basically paying for channels I wasn't watching... Yesterday I got a letter informing me of a price rise in April and it also happened to mention the option of cancelling without early termination charges due to the price rise.... Today I phoned Sky and told them I was cancelling. As of 12th April I will no longer be a Sky customer!!!

Received a black AC power cable for my Amazon Echo unit..4th Generation earlier on. ...£10. As with the Echo Dot, Echo Show etc. it comes with a white cable no matter the colour of the unit. In the living room I have the large Echo unit, which is black, and it sits on top of the black hi-fi stack. The white cable was annoying. The black one is connected now., Looks much better. Amazon started doing this in 2020 starting with my 4th Generation model. I assume manufacturing one colour is less costly. Amazon say it's to do with, 'saving the planet'..lol. Yeah... :)

Btw..for those into amps..I've still got my Audiolab 8000A .Years old and during that time I had it upgraded. Still a great sound. Of course, it doesn't have Blue Tooth,a remote for volume or DAC inputs but I don't need them. A volume remote would be handy, though. I have to tell Alexa to lower the volume and one step down is often not enough so I have to say it again. I leave the volume on the amp at 12.. and use the Echo + and - buttons . I have it within arms-length reach from the settee.

If I have to renew this amp this one gets excellent reviews...Cambridge CXA81(2022). In April 2024 an upgraded model was introduced. https://www.whathifi.com/hi-fi/stereo-amplifiers/cambridge-audio-cxa81-mkii but on e reviewer said he was unable to differentiate between the two . The Mk1 is about half the price at £550.

I was recommended a bottle of Living Souls Lochranza (Arran) 9 Year Old which I've never had and wouldn't normally be something I'd look at, so I bought it and had a dram, which certainly cheered me up; absolutely lovely. It's lightly peated, unlike the stuff from the Lagg distillery which I find too heavy. It's a limited release and being cask strength it needs a drop of water. Worth a shot if you enjoy a dram.

It's good Sky told you about no-fee cancellation re the price rise. I used to have Sky years ago just for the football. No other sport but I had to buy the "Family package, too with Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse cartoons...lol. I think I paid about £30 a month then it went to £50. It would have been great to be able to just pay for sport even if I only watched the football or even pay per view re the games. It wasn't around then but is now. We're with BT for the phone and internet and I can see a lot of football..90%.. for £5 a month. TNT bought out the rights and soon another company will take over. I can watch every 1230 pm Saturday kick-off ,Euro matches and CL.

The only sport I was watching on Sky Sports was Rugby League and mainly the NRL matches from Australia but that was limited to 3 matches per week. I found that all NRL matches are available to stream on a subscription, so I cancelled Sky Sports and now get to watch every match live...

You can tell Alexa to set volume at whatever level you want, 1 being low and 10 max. We usually have it around 3 or 4

Ok..Thanks,I didn't know that. I've just tried it. Alexa..volume 7. Loud. Volume 4. About right. Depends on where the Amp volume is set. I'll experiment. You've just enhanced the quality of my life.. :) I'd still have replaced the white AC adaptor with a black one but the unit can go back on top of the Hi-fi now. I don't need to buy a small, low table beside the settee end.

The reason I have (had) Alexa within arms reach of the settee is so I can quickly turn down the volume when the adverts start. Some of them drive me to distraction. It's a great station so I have to put up with ads.

I do love brussel sprouts:)
Me too. I've heard there is a plan to breed a type of brussel sprouts without the chemical that some people don't like!!

For those who don't like them, fair enough, just don't eat them(which I think many are happy to do)

IMO if they haven't got that distinctive taste then they aren't brussel sprouts.

Dave

Have you tried them roasted Dave? Gorgeous, lay them on your roast potatoes in the oven, lovely ;)

Finally got around to having my leaving drinks after retiring at the end of December. Weather was perfect and we were able to have lunch in the pub garden where I was presented with an Amazon voucher for £220 and this:

Congrats, don't often see glass tankards these days. Nice.

They even got the "C" right!

Now it's down to you to enjoy your retirement as much as possible.

HOPEFULLY my last MRI scan. PITA to get to the place and impossible to park anywhere close, so Mrs Nod dropped me off, went to look at curtains then came back 1/2 hour later.

Main thing that CMU was not having to join her for the curtain shopping!!!

She only spent half hour looking at curtains, that must be a record ;)

AND she was waiting outside the hospital/diagnostic centre (the local Nightingale Hospital repurposed) with a hot chocolate when I came out.

My good lady slept in her bed, for the first time since her surgery to remove the cancerous kidney, renal gland and various nodules. She has been sleeping in a "Lay-z-boy" chair since coming home. Steady progress and I can literally see her improving, every day. :)

Excellent news, all the very best for you both :)

That and the follow up Indecent Exposure had me in tears when I read them.

Paul Sample, the gentleman responsible for many of Tom Sharpe's paperback covers recently passed away. Like his Ogri too.

WCMUT.

Remaining calm and carrying on to successfully complete three DIY tasks despite everything that could go wrong going wrong.

Had a visit to the renal consultant today. He's very pleased with the recent Fistula I've had (3 weeks now). But the surprising thing was that my kidney performance has gone up from 9 to 11 percent. I'm sure that it's down to my change in diet that Wifey oversees, and it may not sound like much of a change, but it's not getting worse at present.

I'm not suffering any of the "nasty" symptoms, such has painful cramps & itchy skin, so as long as I can keep away from those I won't need to go on dialisys; which will happen eventually, but for now, things are "fine".....

Going from 9% to 11% is around a 20% improvement (I think!) Well done to you and your dietary supervisor.

My car is working again!.... Posted earlier this week in the WAMT thread about the CEM in my Volvo, which had a burnt out relay.... This morning the replacement cloned CEM was delivered, I fitted it, reconnected the battery and started the car and everything is working again!!!

A kilo of hummus (other spellings are available and valid!) in the fridge. Actually, a little over but that's cook's perks!. Finally remembered to put a teaspoon of bicarb in the soaking water which has made a big difference in the smoothness of the final product. Apparently it softens the skins of the chick peas.
