WCMUT....what cheered me up today

Have you got a Captain Willard "Seiko"? There's a very good homage with a Seiko movement. Tempted myself!

I've not heard of that one but I see that there are some very reasonably priced homages available.

For the price I think these cheap mechanical watches are a lot of fun and apart from an obvious DOA I've had no issues and if they arrived working they've stayed working for me. I just wanted something I'm not going to get mugged for or worry about it being damaged and it grew into a small collection of 12 homage watches. I think the biggest problem is choosing which original watch you like and if you can do that there's probably a homage of it out there. Just to be clear none of these are counterfeit and none of them carry the original expensive watch name or logo so they're all legal.

It's a shame Sekonda don't do mechanical watches any more. I have one I've had for over 40 years and it's still working fine, it's never been serviced ether but it is on its second strap, good going for 40 years :D

I've just received my latest "homage" watch. This one is an Omega Seamaster 007 edition homage and it seems to be very nice. It seems well made with no obvious faults or sharp edges although I've no idea what the automatic mechanical movement inside is as the page on ebay didn't say but I'm not bothered as it's a cheap gamble at under £40 so that's a £9,460 saving over an original but of course nowhere near the quality. It's just a cheap automatic mechanical watch which seems to work fine. It came with both a metal and a fabric NATO style strap too.

I think that's the last watch I want for now.

I looked at that, but I have 3 working watches and but only wear one most of the time. Just don't need more stuff that won't be used.

Only 3?!

I'm getting better at resisting temptation but still have the occasional relapse.

Ever curious about things.......

I have never heard of a 'homage' watch.......is that a more polite term for a copy, counterfeit, fake watch and if not such a version, can you please explain the backstory and legitimacy of 'an homage watch'.

I just rotate mine wearing a different one every day. I keep my original Swiss watches for very special occasions.

They're just "in the style of" but they're not fakes as they don't carry the Rolex / other famous name or badge and they are AFAIK and from Googling perfectly legal. They range from £20 or so up to over £1,000 depending on the quality. Mine range from £20 odd up to over £100 but less than £200 and I have to say that I don't see any real difference in the quality of the case and strap between them. Some use respected entry level mainstream movements like the Seiko NH3x and some use Chinese movements.

Some come well presented in a box and maybe with an extra strap and maybe a tool and some just come in bubble wrap and in a Jiffy bag. I suppose the more you pay the better the watch, strap and packaging.

This is a homage of the Omega Seamaster on ebay...

It's not the exact one I've just got, just the first one that came up. These are on ebay, Amazon, Ali Express and probably everywhere else.

This looks closer to the original as it has a dull brushed finish.

The problem can be that some of the homages look so convincing that only looking at it can really tell the difference and that means a mugger might have it off you before he/she realises that it's not what they were hoping it was.

I do them a deal... my watch for their phone and maybe it'll be an offer they can't refuse :D

Tree is down, lights are all down, cards are in the bin, no more sausage rolls, used all the crackers.

Only 355 days 'till Christmas :)

Big (600g) boxes of Lindor chocolates being cheaper at our local Sainsbury's than the 337g boxes. Might have a few kg stashed away somewhere!

Even better deal today!!! The 500g spherical packs were knocked down to £1.50. The tin spheres themselves are worth that.

Our neighbour gave us two large boxes of Luxury Lindt chocs.. Really top quality. She gives me Lindor boxes now and then for keeping her garden up together.

We "allow" ourselves one Lindor at bedtime so I think what we have should last us a while now!!!

Let me point you in the direction of the Chainbaker on YouTube. Charlie has some great recipes and all very clear and logical. Between him and Emma's Goodies I've started my baking career.
My wife wants to get into baking this year. We will look them up. Thx.

I didn't think it was possible to eat only one Lindor  ;)

I just about manage! The trick is to brush my teeth as soon as the last of the chocolate taste has gone - not fond of minty milk chocolate!!! (Didn't work when we had After Eights as the bedtime chocolate!!!)

WCMUT was saving £100 or so.

Wanted a slightly more compact pair of binoculars to shove in a pocket when out for a walk/drive and since I've been impressed with the Hawkes I bought a while back, I'd decided on a pair of the Endurance ones - possibly the 10x rather than the 8x. Since Mrs Nod had to go to town this lunchtime, I went with her and nipped along to the local LCE since they're the stockists. Unfortunately, they didn't have either the 10x or 8x in stock but they did have a pair of the Olympus (near) equivalent of the 8x which are even more compact (at the expense of a few mm - they're 8x21 rather than 8x25 but for us, the compactness is more important than the brightness.) which were knocked down to £50 rather than the £150 of the Hawkes.

WCMUT was getting my tax return done and the bill paid. I don't have the attention span/patience to do it so Mrs Nod fills the boxes in for me, leaving me to check it before "signing" the declaration.

I looked at new bins a while back but instead I kept my own and bought a monocular. It was very cheap but it seems to work fine, not pocketable though.

I had to fill in a tax return, made an error and received a tax demand, realised I had made an error and wrote to bring this to their attention, they agreed and it turned out I was due a rebate, happy days.

I've had a hard time finding a metal watch strap and after getting frustrated with zombie shop staff I gave up and bought one off Amazon and it came the very next day, today. It came with a little vice and pusher tool and taking some links out was a doddle despite our indoor lighting and my eyes having to focus at minimum focus distance :D

It was half the price of ones in the shops and much less hassle to DIY. I do try to buy in shops if at all possible but they just wore me down but it all ended happily and I now have a nice "pilots" watch with a nice blue dial on my wrist :D It didn't really strike me until yesterday but this is my only watch with Arabic numerals from 1-12. I've swapped existing straps I already had about but this is the first time I've bought a strap and fitted it myself.

I wonder how many people have a cassette player these days? I have one in my hifi and maybe there's a few people who still have one in a car.

Me....:D A separate one. A Sony....ie not in my hi-fi.

Me, a nostalgic one. My parents bought me a ghetto blaster type thing (radio, cassette player) back in the late 70s. I got War Of the Worlds on cassette to go with it. Still have that.

The ghetto blaster packed in not long after and the shop couldn't fix or replace it, so I was credited and put the money towards a music centre instead.

I missed that tape thingy though.

A couple of years ago during Covid, I was 'window shopping' on EBay and put the model number in out of curiosity. There were a few, non working, ornaments really but there was one working, so I bought it. Still have it.

The model is Bush BR5902.

IIRC I have one in store with my Sinclair ZX Spectrum....... neither have seen the light of day in probably 40 years

Mrs Nod's XK8 had a cassette player - actually a twin media player - it played CDs too! CD players in cars seem to be a dying breed now.

Too true, our oldest car a 2012 has a CD player. Our newest car just has a screen but somehow  , it plays music. Witchcraft.

Mine (13 plate) has one, as does Mrs Nod's MX-5. The iPace (69) doesn't.

Another watch strap. Sorry about the quality, just a snap with a phone.

I like these mesh ones as if you have a thin wrist you don't need to make any more holes, This one is nice and it came with 4 quick release pins. I've ordered a blue one for another watch and that'll be all my watches kitted out for now.

The response I got from BT.

Our Smart Hub 2 went AWOL. I had a spare one so connected it and everything(PC, two tablets, two phones, internet enabled light switches, security camera) linked flawlessly.

The digital voice phone did not and nothing we tried worked.

A very helpful lady at BT(actually in Dublin, which was icy this morning) sorted it for me very quickly which was excellent

The speed and clarity of her help was in stark contrast to the labyrinthine complexity of the BT website.

I'm not sure if BT should be happy they have created something which the builder of the labyrinth for King Midas would be proud of, or they should hang their heads in shame because as a communication company they have made something so appalling.

Midas had the golden touch, Minos had Daedalus's labyrinth.

BT seem to be a PITA to deal with - Mrs Nod waited for almost a month for something to arrive, only to (eventually) be told (via e-mail when every other conversation had been over the phone) that the item hadn't been despatched yet... The only upside is that the item has rectified the woeful physical connection's speed.

Thanks Nod. I'm embarrassed to say I knew it was Minos but managed to type the other one - I should re-read before pressing 'Post reply' :$

Used to be a fairly major interest of mine and still enjoy Ancient History. The recent discovery (June last year) of a labyrinthine structure on Crete is of much interest since we holiday there a couple of times each year so will visit the site once it's open.

ETA, You're not the first and won't be the last to mistype - an all-to-frequent problem of mine!

THIS video cheered me up today - and proves that just because you CAN doesn't necessarily mean you should!

Absolutely barking but in the best tradition of "madcap" British inventors.

The bloke opposite me put his car in the drive today. He very rarely does this and usually parks smack opposite my drive with such millimetric precision that I'm sure he does it deliberately so I had the luxury of backing straight out today without the usual four point turn to get out and pointing the right way. A special day :D

Perhaps you should thank him for his courtesy, today ;)

I gave up years ago. He's not talkative, he's unfriendly to the point of being unpleasant and not that it matters to me but he's massively overweight. His wife is very nice (and very attractive) and I just can't see what she sees in him. He must have hidden depths.

I have three cars but I only leave them on the road for a couple of minutes at the most if I'm shuffling them about. Why other people wont put their cars in their driveways I don't know. When you turn onto our road you can't do so on the correct side of the road due to parked cars. They often form an almost unbroken line down the road and when joining the road to get home I very often have to wait for a gap in oncoming traffic as the road is reduced to one lane.

We used to live in a road like that, some herbert used to park outside our house, then walk down the road to his house. So I got my car out of the garage we had round the back and parked it outside his house, two can play at that game. He also had a garage round the back he never used.
We have moved to where the parking is much better
