WCMUT....what cheered me up today

After being in storage for 5 years, I put the HiFi back together last weekend. Currently listening to some of my old Jazz Funk CD's for the first time in years. We've decided to invest in a new turntable so we can play all the old vinyl, there's boxes & boxes of that to get through...
 
Some of my LP's seemed to be a bit crackly but a quick rinse with warm water and playing through a couple of times at 45 (instead of 33 to save time) had them sounding a lot better.

I have an old Garrard deck upstairs I've had for over 40 years and a Linn Sondek LP12 downstairs I've had for just a couple of years less. Upstairs I have a Creek 4040 amp, Monitor Audio speakers and a Sony CD player, downstairs I have an Exposure amp and Tannoy speakers, an Arcam CD player, Denon cassette deck and a cheap Tangent tuner. I wouldn't be without my hifi systems. My most recent CD buys are a couple of "Within Temptation" albums I got cheap on ebay.

I use something very similar to this

Playing them through before cleaning can risk damage to your needle and the record if there's even tiny bits of grit.

I'm happy. A rinse in warm water and a brush with my cleaning brush basically did it, the play throughs were really just the final touch and there's no apparent damage to needle. Also after not being used for a long time both "needles" benefitted from a stint on a little vibration pad gizmo I've had for years.
 
Had Home insurance renewal at a 31% increase. Called them today and got £40 off ..ie an 18% increase rather than 31%. That's fine but what about those who aren't up to getting on the phone and 'having a chat'. I had my percentages ready and average increases for this region and told the chap how low a risk we are ..etc. .. What did strike me was I got £40 off last year,too. I assume £40 is the discount offered to those who call.

I read that insurance premium increases have now plateaued so shouldn't be in the region of 30% next year. I did try to get an online quote from the RBS amongst a couple of others and I got to date of birth. I was able to input the day but the month box had a drop-down list of months to select from but it didn't show. The application wouldn't go any further. I called them only to hear an automated voice asking for my account number and if I didn't have one then register. I didn't take it any further so they may have lost new business. It can often be a real faff doing things like this online. I'm online now with my credit card but I had tried as few years ago and it was so hard I gave up. I told one of the staff I spoke to over the phone and he said it was too complicated and they'd had a lot ofd complaints. So..these 'clever' people..as I see them who are very competent with IT issues have no perception that many others,especially the elderly and not-so-bright, can struggle and don't want 'complicated'.
 
I've just had a midnight snack. Well, 00:07.

I wanted to make some bread but I was busy and didn't start until 9pm. When it was ready I noticed a delve in one end so I cut the delved slice off, buttered it and ate it whilst it was still warm. It was lovely :D

Trick or treaters were well down in numbers here, but it's half term and we know at least a third of the families in our street alone are on holiday.
 
We had loads, a very busy night. It's nice, a good community spirit.
 
My 11 year old granddaughter was given a £10 note by one of her neighbours when out trick or treating last night, she was thrilled to bits.
 
Me too been ignoring them for years.
Did think about getting a water pistol and then saying trick and soaking them but SHMBO wouldnt let me
 
I went out for a walk this morning and noticed that our salmon pink rose has bloomed. It has such an amazing fragrance.
 
I wondered who was ringing the doorbell at 7.00pm. Not late trick or treaters,surely ? I thought I better answer the door.

There, on the doorstep, were my Indian neighbours from two doors up having returned from a Diwali celebration and they gave us quite a bit of Indian food.

Aloo Samosas- chicken pieces and fried rice. Some kind of sweet dumplings( Googled it..Gulab Jamun) There was a small sandwich box filled with what tasted like creamy custard but thinner. Coulld have drunk it all in one go..Lol. Googled it but can't find it.

No,not Lassi. I took the empty boxes back to them earlier and asked them. It's Rabri. It's very sweet and very easy to make which isn't good news..Lol. I told them that I'd decanted it into two small ramekins and put them in the freezer to get "ice cream" for tonight. They really laughed and said they hadn't thought of doing that. The chicken, and what I thought was fried rice, was actually Chicken Biryani. Really tasty, not too spicy but it had 'an edge'.

They had a skeleton sitting on their front lawn, lit up, as part of the Diwali celebration but "Trick or Treaters" stole the skull.. :D

Although the photo on the front of this Youtube clip shows it to be white, it's actually cream which can be seen in the video.

I wonder if it could be started/made with Condensed Milk which IIRC comes sweetened???

I told them that the taste I recognised was condensed milk. Tbh..they speak good english but so heavily accented I find it difficult, even wearing,,understanding them but she nodded and smiled when I mentioned that. I don't know if that meant 'yes' or not. Lol. As I said in my other post I put some in the freezer thinking it would come out like ice cream. It didn't.It became indedible.

So..I told her that I made ice cream with just Carnation condensed milk and 600mls of M&S double cream. M&S double cream makes it taste creamier than using other supermarket brands. Just use an electric hand whisk and whisk until it's the consistency of mud..not to overdue it so it coagulates. Carnation do caramel ,too and sometimes I use ordinary (original) carnation milk and add 50mls of Baileys.

Time to watch the Chn4 Dispatches programme, I mentioned, on the Royals. and their finances.

The same happened to us. My wife's car insurance has gone down from £360 to £220, so no need to go compare.
 
Seeing the young Lynx at DZP. We've been wanting to get down to see them for a while and have missed the "kitten" stage for this batch but since it didn't take the parents long to do the Boom-Chakka-Chakka last time, it might not be too far in the future that the pitter patter of tiny paws is heard again! They're still at the pouncing on Mum stage (Dad is keeping mostly out of range!)
 
WCMUT is my insurance (car) and Mrs Nod's both being cheaper than last year and Mrs Nod's other car being significantly (a couple of hundred quid!) by shifting to a different (still big name) insurer.
 
I have to insure my Getz soon. I'm hoping for a cut or just the same as last year.

I haven't been using my film era lenses lately so I sold some on here and sent 20 odd off to a dealer. Sadly once the dealer had the lenses they cut their offer for a few, I smelled a rat and just got the lot back and sent them somewhere else and I got a good price. One lens in particular was said by the first company to be faulty and in need of repair, I disagreed and so did the company who's offer I've now accepted, they described it as E+.

Mrs WW is unavoidably late returning to the UK and I've had to cancel three hotel reservations. Two I lost £50 each on (they take £50 at booking you pay the rest when there) but the third gave me a partial refund. Better than nothing :D
 
On the bird seen theme.......WCMU yesterday

The occasional Red Kite that we see over the estate came again but this time a lone Magpie started mobbing it, and that was the first time I have seen it happen:)

We have a few pairs of buzzards and they get mobbed by crows.

We regularly get a pair of buzzards doing circles in the sky and I know when they are there when I hear the screech of gulls which do not take kindly to the buzzard's intrusion into 'their' air space. Other birds objecting to their presence are crows, as mentioned by Andy.The buzzards take it all in their stride...flight..lol and gently twist and turn, gaining height. I recall seeing a golden eagle over Mull being mobbed like this. I think,by buzzards. Many years ago but I'm sure it was a pair of buzzards. What was amazing was that the golden eagle went in circles gaining height after each one until it became a speck in the sky. At a point, well before that, the buzzards disengaged. I've checked the altitude buzzards will go to and the migrating honey buzzard flies at 1000-1500 ft. but no detail to be found re the regular buzzard here. The golden eagle. ?....20,000 ft.

I've posted this here rather than "Talk Nature".

Not long returned from a boat trip to see dolphins. South Tenerife. We do this each time we visit. Today we saw several dolphins over a small area so, I assume a small pod but the highlight for everyone was a mum and her calf,which was about a third her size and kept right up against her. They stayed very close to the boat and came to my side just a few metres away. The main reason I'm posting is that.. I left left my camera in the hotel. room. Last February, we did this same trip and I took my camera and it was difficult to get a decent shot, not least because the waters are black..volcanic sea bed ? and the bobbing of the boat made it stressful trying to get a shot not to mention being close to another passenger.A German chap,next to me,suggested I put the camera away and enjoy watching them which I did so, this time, no camera and I really enjoyed the experience.It sounds like sacrilege on here but I'd do the next time.I do have great shots of dolphins from New Quay, Wales.
 
Mk 1 eyeballs work just fine! It's not as easy to share images from them though.
