WCMUT....what cheered me up today

Quite a good day yesterday. I ordered a new Kindle yesterday which was due for delivery 23rd December. Got an email yesterday evening to say it's been dispatched and will be delivered today.

Also, got an email from work. Been given a pay rise and a decent one at that!

Some days you're the windscreen, some days you're the fly. Yesterday, I was the windscreen. :D

Oh the irony....cheered me up no end :D

Unfortunately this and other non harmfull products 'marketed" as solving a non existent problem will always lure the gullible. NB gullibility is not limited to the poorly educated.

I've just finished my internet day which I have every month. I go though all the incomings and outgoings and check if I can get a better rate from any bank or cut any outgoings by switching suppliers, that sort of thing. Since interest rates collapsed getting a bit extra in or cutting a bill here or there all adds up and even if it's only £10 I do it. Why not? I allocate one day per month to this as since I left full time employment 11 years ago I've had no regular income until I started to receive a company pension earlier this year. I see this internet day as a work day.

Anyway. This month I'm up as my income has exceeded my outgoings and this is 4 months in a row now which makes a nice change after years of my money going down every month. Being up despite Xmas spending was a nice surprise. Me and Mrs WW will be off to donate to our favourite charities some time soon.

How much do you save?

How much do you save?

Wot? On internet day? This month... I saved nada on bills... because no big bills came in but I did get some cheaper tyres than the ones that were on when my MX5 needed four new ones, I saved about £40 on that but the biggie was that my income exceeded my outgoings despite the tyres and despite Xmas spending. Usually I try to save a bit when it's time to renew insurance or something like that, sadly no chance of saving on gas or electricity these days.

Depends. Octopus recommended me to set my boiler temperatures a bit lower and I’ve ‘saved’ £10 in the past week (smart meter)! Actually I’m not pushed on that as I have a fixed rate until next August and they owe me loadsamoney at present.

No chance I can do that as I have Mrs WW and a 92 year old to consider and both like it hotter than the tropics here. Another big thing here is washing and drying but it's proving next to impossible to cut down on this. We are still in credit with our suppliers though.

So, £40 saved in a working day - say 8 hours. Do you always work for £5 and hour? Just sayin'...

I'm 32p in arrears this quarter :(
Gutted :D

Yeah, I’m fortunate in not liking it too hot. I used to set it a 16° and anyway the back door was open most of the day but I’ve upped it to a toasty 18° in the day time now

While I'm at home why not? So, I saved £40 and other than that I enjoyed married life and looked after a 92 yo who needs a lot of help and all without turning up to do a 9-5 or taking a penny off the state. That all seems like a pretty profitable and fulfilling month to me. I retired at 49 and I'm comfortable but that doesn't mean I don't care about the pennies as they're better in my pocket or donated than handed over to a utility or insurance company.

I currently pay around £35 a month to Plusnet for Fibre and Landline, only problem is the landline ain't fit for purpose IMO, I was having problems with Talk Talk last year due to their annoyingly annoying Indian call centre but at least their landline actually worked.

Lots of people don't seem to bother with a landline these days but maybe you can't split the broadband and landline to drop the phone?

We have Virgin and rarely have a problem free day these days.

I guess you have a much higher speed than I. With Vodaphone I pay £22 pcm for landline and 35Mbps Broadband — I don’t actually use the landline as all my calls are on the mobile for£6 pcm with giffgaff and almost none of those are outgoing calls or texts since I do those for free with FaceTime, Signal etc over WiFi.

BT here about 26 quid for ( now it sorted ) 35 down & 7 up ( no LL)
plus £6 / month for mobile unlimited texts and calls, and 2Gb data.
I never get close to the data allowance.

Same unlimited calls and text which I hardly use. 1gb data but hardly use as since COVID I’ve only needed it at GP or Hospital and both are on NHS WiFi — hospital is something like 100 up & down!

WCMUT?

1) The present for my Grand Daughter that was apparently "lost in post" arrived this morning 10 days later than the Amazon ETA.
2) shopping for the final food bits went smoothly this morning, although the supermarket was busy, no one seemed to be panic buying
and the shelves were all well stocked, with no apparent omissions, and the majority of people were masked up, and no pushing and shoving.

Obviously not an M&S shopper then! Again this year, a number of items with poor use by dates and then yesterday/today not available! Grr!

Getting the cake iced and the roast marinating for tomorrow's lunch. Just the spuds and parsnips to bash and the sprouts to peel.

I’ve several times had short use-by-dated stuff from Waitrose and each time they’ve given it free because “it has a shorter date than we’d like”. Good customer relations but I’m not sure it’s good business — though I spend near the minimum £40 and I guess most are spending much more.

I'm very wary re use-by dates expiring on the day or the following day or so especially fish and fruit and veg. Rotting leaf edges of lettuce, for instance, can be seen in some cases. I was in Morrisons one day when I saw that a boxed salmon steak was rotting. It had a yellow 'reduced' label on it. I pointed it out to a member of staff..a young man, who said that the sell-by date wasn't until the next day.. I then gave him a short lecture on food safety, trading standards not to mention customer relations and how he should be handling it. His response ? A grump. I wasted no more time with him but took it to the. customer help desk .The lady profusely apologised and called for a member of staff to dispose of it. I told how the young man..about 17/18 and not the sharpest tool in the box..had responded and would she get someone...maybe the floor manager of that areaa, to have a word with him. She got me to identify him and assured me that she wouldn't let it go.

It depends, one has to engage one’s brain. Often stuff like, say, block Parmesan, has a sell-by date which is frankly ridiculous. Fish can be a problem to but again my local Morrisons has usually been good with looking after their fish and stuff like traditionally smoked (not coloured) kippers are different from Whitebait (guts still inside!) and so on. It’s a problem with buying online though :(.

I do, generally, engage my brain,Richard....:)

Morrison's fresh fish counter has a very good reputation. The incident I described involved a packaged salmon steak in a chiller cabinet.

There have been a lot of complaints about short-dated,even out of date, food items that come with online/click & collect/ deliveries. Hard fruit like apples, pears, pineapples ..even toms etc are ok. I'd be wary re meat, though. We go to a local farm shop for meat
. Re your cheese. I have a reaction to cheeses, especially the hard cheeses like Cheshire and Red Leicester so not an item I'm familiar with. It makes me, momentarily, feel hot/cold with a forehead and eyelids perspiration as though I had 'flu. I can't be sure but as I get it with vinegar too I'm putting it down to acid. I don't suffer this with milk so not lactic acid which is in cheese. Acetic maybe,in some cheeses. I first noticed it when,as a 4/5 year old I put salad cream on my salads. That has 'spirit vinegar' in it..a stronger acetic acid. Dunno..

When we get short dated food items with our Sainsburys Click & Collect (less than 2 days to go) I have found contacting them via Twitter inevitably gets the items cost refunded & we are told we can keep or dispose of the product as we see fit.

I know, it was just a general observation!

I dare say they vary from shop to shop but both my local ones are (or were since I’ve been very seldom in the last 2 years) very good. We have an actual wet fish fishmonger in town (very rare in Yorkshire it seems, fish used to be sold with game by the local greengrocer, whose shop is still going strong) but Morrison’s is better.

Pedant mode: spirit vinegar is not necessarily stronger than brewed & both are acetic. I don’t think you will find any vinegar in supermarkets stronger than 6%, most are 4%. Much stronger ones are sold on the Continent and diluted for use.

Your reaction to cheese is interesting. I have a feeling it may be an extreme version of what I consider the ‘normal’ taste of “proper” cheddar or “extra mature” which is about all that’s found these days :(.

WCMUT? I got an email first thing inviting me to an online induction for that job I got the other week, on the 10th of January, 12.30 to 17.00, only thing is do I have the attention span to sit quietly through a 4 and half hour Zoom meeting?

Managing to make non-lumpy custard from scratch. Don't usually bother - Bird's (either "just add boiling water" or traditional) is plenty good enough but we had 3 egg yolks left over from making the royal icing for the cake.

Ordered a couple of things from Amazon yesterday, nothing that was urgent, predicted delivery dates 30/12 to 4/1.
Both arrived today :)

Good luck!

I don’t know, but maybe it’s possible for you to record the meeting so you can watch it again in case you mis bits?

I got an email first thing from my maths tutor, I got 100% on the BIDMAS assignment I did the other week! Normally I suck at anything beyond basic maths, and Algebra makes my head hurt!
