I did stop one regular though, they made the mistake of parking the night before the bin men were due.
I always throw my bags / wheelie bin out in the morning, when I leave the house at around 5 am.
The car was neatly sandwiched between bags and bins, I even was neighbourly and bought next doors rubbish down to the road for them (y) :D

No nearby station. There is a small parade of shops a couple of roads away but with parking on both sides of the road by the shops and plenty of spaces in the roads before getting to our road, that doesn't appear to be the reason either.
 
What cheered my wife and I up this morning was this little chap (or chapess) in the Sidmouth churchyard. Seemed quite happy to pose...

WCMUT...after 4 months...being officially discharged from hospital (albeit outpatient for most) care!
 
This really,really cheered me up. New people are moving in next door, as I post, and they had work done on the house/garden over the past three weeks and yesterday (So, I suppose this is WCMUY..lol) a huge plum tree has been taken down in the back garden allowing the sun to stream into our summerhouse from early morning. We have brekky in there most mornings in spring/summer. It will be especially beneficial in winter when the low sun takes over an hour or so to traverse it when it can then start warming the summerhouse. The sky-view has opened up enormously and the residents behind them are holding a BBQ party, I hear :)

There's no legal limit to the height trees are allowed to grow. I enquired. Locally, there are three eucalyptus trees in back gardens that have grown to about three times the height of the houses. Average house height 7.5M (20-24') I just Googled it. Theses trees can get to 60m..200ft in old money. There's a silver birch tree in another back garden nearby that is also way up past the height of the house.They can grow to 25m (82ft)..even 31m (102ft)

Lol. I have to say that I do find it a strange name. I've Googled why it was given that name . Here's what I found.

The name Booby was possibly based on the spanish slang term 'bobo' meaning 'stupid' as these birds had a habit of landing on board sailing ships where they were easily captured and eaten. Such is mankind..Ugh.

I also read that there is so much plastic in the oceans that 90% of their nests are made up of plastic items.

One of the benches outside of a charity shop on the high street had a sign put on it a few weeks back designating it as a "Buddy Bench"
A few days later JWs took it over, sitting there waiting for victims to sit and chat to them
Last time I saw them, over a week ago they were standing by the bench, haven't seen them since
Hoping they have been moved on, don't know who put the sign on the bench,it's just a laminated paper one, the shop also had a decorated old piano that anyone could play

They take their children,from a very young age door to door. Most people politely turn them away but many are also abusive so children believe many people hate them.They are not encouraged to be friends with non-JW. anyway .I've actually read a passage by the leadership that states if a non JW exhibits a good moral disposition similar to the ones they have this is not a excuse to befriend them to any extent beyond a superficial level.

No birthdays celebrated. No christmas. The children are withdrawn from any school nativity plays, so,basically the parents are alienating their children. Having said that many are home-tutored. This is a ploy to keep them apart from non JW. No Mothers'/Fathers day. Even atheists indulge themselves in christmas. Prof Richard Dawkins even goes to church and sings hymns .He said he enjoys it. Celebrating (whatever) is a natural part of human culture. In my opinion all this and taking children door to door is form of child abuse.

I'm aware that during WW2 they were people who refused to 'go to war' ..contientious objectors' but at least they weree prepared to serve in non-combat roles. JW won't even dio that so they are comfortable with enjoying the freedoms others fought and died for but not be a part of it.can you imagine what life woukld have been like had Hitler won ? JW were amongst the those singled out for murder.

All this stuff generally goes under the radar. Ask people what they know about the 'Watchtower Bible and Tract Society..aka Jehovah Witness and they'll immediately respond with the blood transfusion issue and maybe that they don't celebrate christmas,birthdays Easter etc. Unfortunately, their membership is growing worldwide.. They spend far less time door to door now and traget milleniums in shopping malls, city/town centres, railway stations and other public places.

Next time anyone reading the above is approached you'll now have some questions to ask. Whatever you do, avoid letting them get you onto the Bible. They know it inside out and you won't win. Get the conversation onto the above...or just walk away.

I never get into any discussions with them, I used to have a a very friendly but large and noisy GSD who I allowed to peer through a slightly opened door, they never hung around for long and after a couple of attempts gave up trying

I knew a lot of what you have posted, like a lot of religious cults they are a law unto themselves and very pushy once they do get into a conversation, I've even had them trying to stop me when I've been walking down the street with my my then very young kids, they start by talking to the kids, I asked them not to quoting the stranger danger thing and walked on, they can use their own kids they weren't going to use mine

I've seen them once this week, standing outside the local supermarket not quite so comfy for them.

I've long felt that the rule on religion should be "believe what you want but keep it strictly to yourself".

Agree re keeping ones religion to oneself but many don't. I also have a big problem with parents imposing it on their children too. I call it indoctrination.
I oppose 'Thought for the Day' on Radio4 at 7.50am. A good concept but it should not be exclusively the prerogative of religion. There's a lot of criticism of it for that reason. I turn it off.

I was on the foc'sle of a cruise ship travelling through the Inner Passage,Alaska,taking photos of the snow-capped mountains when an middle-aged American lady came to me and said it was wonderful what her god...there are 3500 main stream gods)...had created. I told her that my understanding was that they were cause by subduction of the Pacific Plate under the North American plate in conjunction with volcanoes at which she walked off in a huff. We had a couple at our house (helpers of a landscape gardener) and in a coverstaion during a tea break the chap said to me that they were Christians which I thought a bit odd and it was said with an edge to his voice and a hard stare. I realised later that his partner had gone into the house to the loo and she'd seen my copy of Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion.They were short with me after that.

I could spend hours on this subject but I've had a good shout.
 
I thought I'd share this uplifting article that I read in my newspaper today.

Week in week out, month after month I would read of the imminent demise of one form of wildlife or another along with the destruction of habitat. Today I was greatly cheered.
It's worth reproducing. I'll have to precis it but keeping the main points.The heading is 'Wildcats come home' Seems there are plans afoot to re-introduce wildcats. One of the great limestone outcrops in the Derwent valley is known as Wild Cat Tor and further up the valley on the North Lees is a clough called Cattiside said to be the last known location of native wildcats centuries ago.Biologists have been learni g from German conservationists about the habitat and behavioural needs of wildcats with a view to reintroduction soon in southern England. Strict rules apply to the release of wildlife,the most important requirement being that all the factors that led to the species' extermination must be removed.Usually,this comes down to the right habitat and an absence of human persecution.

In the case of red squirrels the introduction of the US Grey Squirrel caused the decline of the Red..Efforts (culling the Grey) to re-establish Reds in southern Scotland,Cumbria,Northumberland and Anglesey have resulted in the Red bouncing back. These areas are at the limits of the Grey and an elimination programme re the Greys has been very successful but there's a long way to go in other areas,like much of the Midlands and southern England.

While there continues to be a decline in much of our wildlife the statre of some of our larger species once lost to England is looking up. In a five-year project ,common cranes have been reintroduced to Somerset's wetlands with a current population of 200.. A 20-year programme to bring back Great Bustards to Salisbury Plain after an absence of a century has established more than 100 of these fantastic heavyweight birds and this year, tentative attempts at breeding White Storks at Knepp Castle Estate (West Grinstead,Horsham..West Sussex) where 20 young birds of German origin * have been released. Add to these successes the return of decent populations of most of our large birds birds of prey...ospreys,marsh harriers,red kites and white-tailed eagles along with successful introductions of pine martens,water voles and beavers.

With imagination,supportive landowners and careful rer-introductions there's no reason why the Peak District woods and dales shoulkd not in future be home to beavers,pine martens and wild catrs and its skiews to osp[reys,red kitres and golden eagles.

* I'm sure the Cranes re the Slimbridge project (the one referred to above ...also camne from Germany..I heard that the eggs hatched with 24 hours of arriving.

This might put a dampener on the above but the government has to deal with the persecution of the likes of the Hen Harrier ..etc on driven grouse-shooting estates and the best way to do it is to hold the landowner culpable. I abhor the activity.. or any other so-called 'sport' involving wildlife/animals and take an extremely dim view of those who partake in such activities directly or indirectly ..ie following /supporting. It can hardly be called a 'sport' so I call it 'an activity' The Glorious (Inglorious !! )12th ?? Not so glorious if you're a grouse. It should be banned but I doubt that will happen for obvious reasons.

Just on the subject of bashing the bible.

The doorbell went the other day and I opened it to find two ladies, maybe mother and daughter with the mother being an elderly lady in a wheel chair. The (I assumed) daughter asked me in a softly spoken Irish accent if I'd read the bible and we had a short chat during which she asked me if I had any favourite sections of the bible and she showed me one of hers on her smartphone. I was expecting some sort of sales pitch but none came so I asked them what the point of all this was and if they were just going door to door spreading the message and the reply was that they were just encouraging people to read the bible.

The whole encounter only lasted a few minutes and I have to say that I was rather touched and a little uplifted in these days of a divided nation and all. They were both happy and smiling and for whatever reason were just doing their thing, not being too pushy and not actually taking up too much of my time. When they left I hoped they wouldn't face any abuse on their travels.
 
WCMUT was the LOM jumping up on the bed to wake us up at about 5 AM. Maybe a bit early BUT she's been under the weather (to put it mildly!) since we got back from holiday so has been to the vets' a few times - the antibiotic shot (for a bladder infection) seems to have worked its magic which is a HUGE relief! She's lost a fair bit of weight but is now eating better so will hopefully start bulking up for winter.
 
Unfortunately the bladder infection was the least of her worries - turns out she was riddled with tumours so today we took the decision to set her free from pain and discomfort.

Not exactly a cheering up moment but a far better end than either Mum or Dad were allowed so (if any death can be) a good death.

I'm so sorry, Nod, but you definitely did the right thing. Now just hold on the good memories of her.
 
We are. It's still very raw but we can just about see things of hers without collapsing in sobs!

We won't have another and only had her by default after taking her on from Dad when he was in the Hospice but we wouldn't have missed a day (well, maybe the past week, if we had a choice!) of her company other than going on holiday.

Yep, been there done that. I don't have one now so gave most of their stuff to a local rescue centre, but for some odd reason there's still a scratching post behind the settee. I kept a few of their toys too. I just couldn't erase them from the house. Now I have an ongoing project making a sort of digital scrapbook of anecdotes............. and there's a lot after five of them...............

Nod. I agree with this. Over the years I've had to do the same thing as you have had a number of times. After one such time, quite a few years ago, a then neighbour of mine said to me "You're sad because of your loss, but also remember what joy you had before that.
 
Early thought was that her kidneys were aging so we got 3 packs of special renal diet food which she barely touched. Being elderly (well, at 15 she was no spring chicken!) we have been using Senior formulated foods for a few years. All the "specialist" food went to the local RSPCA shelter since they have a few guests who need the extra help. Any other foods (she rather liked one particular flavour so we bough a couple of boxes, just in time for her appetite to drop off...) will be going to assorted friends who have cats. Her litter tray and carry case along with a box of kitten food (suggested since it has a bit more fat and protein which might have helped her build up some strength had she been able to eat) will be going to a friend's daughter who is getting a kitten for her birthday at the end of next month.

I've banned Mrs Nod from repairing the arm of my armchair (which was the cat's favourite scratching post [she steadfastly ignored "proper" ones!] since day 1 with Mum and Dad) and there are a fair few photos around and I shall be printing a couple more. Her collar will stay hanging in the conservatory as a memento too. Gone but will take a hell of a lot of forgetting - and we won't be trying to forget her. (Yes, that's her in my avatar too!)
 
After yesterday's annoyance of Queen tickets being very expensive, this morning I got tickets for Michael Shenker's Fest next April. Can't wait. :)

My RAC breakdown recovery was due for renewal and they put it up from £90 to £109 but AA had an offer on and did the same cover for £50 and that covers my 2 cars or any car I'm in. They'll no doubt put it up next year so I'll have to shop around again but that's what you have to do these days.

My neighbour knocked my door and gave me £500 he owed me. It was in payment for my vet bill after his dog attacked mine. I really never thought I'd see it.

An added bonus and another smile; an hour ago (on a local unmade road while walking the dog) I found half a dozen rolls of turf that had obviously bounced off the back of the delivery truck - just perfect to patch up my lawn's bald patch.

I may buy a lottery ticket tonight . . .
