WCMUT....what cheered me up today

Crumbs (no pun intended...as no crumbs anyway ;) ) this takes me back too:)

Was always a treat when my mum made it. I have made it myself a very few times over the past decades and your post is a nice memory jogger to make it again soon'ish.

Other lovely foodstuffs she made ~ 'honey' cake, almond macaroons, bread pudding ....happy memories tinged with sadness of her passing in the early 90's

Ooh, almond macaroons. Mum used to make those, I'll have to see if I can persuade her to resurrect the recipe. :D

I feel very fortunate that, in my mid-fifties, both my parents are still around (both 84)

So you're still young enough to get your hand slapped if you try to pinch one off the cooling tray? :p

And they can still catch him!

The 1st meal I ever cooked was Matzo Brei
I've never heard of it until now, I like eggs ( a lot)
So its certainly something I'll try (y)

@Marc Though I did not read the full recipe you posted ~ was it only for savoury?.......................................to me Matzo Brei has always been a sweet treat, not unlike French Toast (though granted the Matzo does not absorb the egg like bread does ;) ) so I sprinkle the sugar into and over the plateful of deliciousness ~ mmmmm :)

I just linked to the Wiki definition

To me it was always a Jewish version of eggs on toast. my recipe was to break up 5 matzos into small pieces and soak in hot water for around 30 seconds. Then whisk up 5 eggs and add a handful of parmesan cheese then combine with the drained matzos. Fry it in a little butter for a few minutes.

As I recall it:-
3 Matzo broken roughly into pieces ......wetted well under the cold tap and slightly squeezed to get rid of excess water. Put damp Matzo into frying pan (pre heated with butter or marge) and fry off turning to heat & brown to taste. Once heated through pour over two beaten eggs making sure that egg coats as much of the Matzo as possible. Fry untill egg is cooked.......turn out onto to plate and sweeten to taste.

PS my memory is rather vague as to the number of Matzo's and eggs to suit???

PPS as I love savoury dishes I have always had a sweet tooth ;)

Oh! just had another recollection.......................apart from the almond macaroons, mum also made coconut pyramids (frankly I did not like them that much) and cinnamon balls :) I still have a real love of cinnamon compared to any other spice in a baked product.

And as for the bread pudding ~ nirvana when baked but steamed was a nice treat too!

Should we rename this thread What Cooking is Marc Up To?
Well it's certainly what cheers me up!! :D

I probably wouldn't like the matzo thing but the thought (and even better, reality!) of food always cheers me up - especially since I'm trying to eat less. Weirdly, watching food programmes and reading recipes helps sate my appetite - I can taste the food described fairly accurately.

Mrs F (not Jewish) was very skeptikal when I told her I was going to make it but she loved it

Crumbs, talk about thinking of food cheering one up.

In the early '70's I was was mountaineering in Austria and we were served Kaiserschmarren (Kaiserschmarn, Kaisermwarm being other spellings) and what a dish for a sweet tooth it was............................then sometime in the '80's I was holidaying in the West Country and came across a small restaurant run by Austrians and, you guessed it, they served the same dish :D

PS @Nod I think our pallettes are developed (set?) in childhood and younger years so as adults we all have different (though some shared???) food loves and experiences, so not all such dishes will sit well with everyone :)

I have a problem with some eggy things - to put it bluntly, they bounce! I can't eat any type of "egg", be it boiled, fried or whatever but am fine with meringue, mayonnaise and things like that. I really wish I could eat the things - such a neat package. Might give the matzo things a try, a mouthful (probably) won't make me heave! (I can eat tiny bits like those in egg fried rice without a problem, it's just a mouthful that won't stay down and I HATE throwing up!!! [did way too much as a dedicated drinker...])

Apparently, my egg bouncing started when I was about 3; we were on holiday in Austria over easter and they "do" real eggs rather than chocolate ones. By all accounts, I was a cutie as a child (how things have changed in 5* years!!!) so all the staff at the hotel were feeding me boiled eggs. I've tried a few times in the intervening years but can't stomach the whole thing. LOVE the coating round a Scotch egg but have to leave the bit in the middle to someone else.

WCMUT....The arrival of my new espresso machine.
The old one died a couple of days ago, and being off work for potentially another three weeks and currently not able to drive, I need real coffee! :-)

Oops.
My inaugural cup is hours past!

Retail therapy! Should be available on prescription!!!

May the recovery continue - I hear chocolate's quite good too.

Not in an espresso machine.

Mine does only coffee.

I did really mean chocolate in general as a recovery aid - including hot chocolate (if that floats your boat!). Almost certainly best made NOT in an espresso machine (although a mocha would combine one with t'other! [But not putting the wrong type of bean through the espresso maker...])

I have fallen in love with Chocochino (y) (Dolce Gusto)

Is he aware of your infatuation? :whistling:

WCMUT was the arrival of a slight impulse buy - an RX100 III. Spare (E-X Pro) batteries arrived yesterday so the arrival has been eagerly expected! On charge before playing tomorrow.

Thanks to whoever it was who pointed out the good price on A**z** a few days ago.

WCMUT.....Picking up my new car. :-)

WCMUT was asking a member of staff at a café we visited to let a bumblebee out of the window staff-side of the counter...she duly obliged.

Also scooped up another (in a small carton) struggling at a window in the house we’re house/dog sitting in and took it outside. It must be very frustrating for them wondering how they can see outside but can’t reach it.

We had a pied wagtail flying around in the corridor at work last week, I guess it flew in by mistake when someone left the doors open. Only had the odd pigeon before. As my dyno wasn't running that day I opened all the doors up so it would be able to fly through. Never saw it later in the day so hopefully it saw daylight and the escape route I had provided.

This made me smile.
Thank you.

Recovery still going okay?

Apart from a wound complication ( which I won't gross you out with) it's going pretty well, thanks.
Total lack of appetite is a fortuitous side effect. :-)

Makes my stone-and-a-half-(and a little bit more!) in 5 1/2 weeks or so look a bit puny! I'd rather avoid your method though, Ruth.

Hope the recovery gets back on track ASAP.
