WCMUT....what cheered me up today

Arriving in Carrcassonne safely and finding somewhere to stay walking distance from the old city. I think I'll like it here.

I was going to stay near Aragnouet for the remainder but disaster struck.

A fox attacked my tent at 2am last night. I woke to a rummaging and growling sound. As I was camping alone I take a hammer with me in case I need to fight off a robber/assaulter/deliverance type dude. Luckily I had it as I managed to fend the fox away. Sadly I didn't kill it but the blows were enough to make it yelp and scarper.

What I didn't realise was what a narrow escape I had until the next day. The ground was a bit uneven so I swapped ends last night. If I hadn't the fox would have injured my face. It ripped a hole in the tent and air bed. When I heard the rummaging I recoiled, got the hammer and swung it in the direction of the fox. Had I been the other way round might have been harder.

I spent the night in the car afterwards in case it came back with it's mates.

Why has this cheered me up. It's forced me to check into a nice hotel and give myself a little luxury. That and I don't have a missing eye and disfigured face.

...for clarity, I mean as in 'carry on camping' the film...not as an instruction ;)

Sorry Steve but I did chuckle, you can't get away from it can you, not even by crossing the channel.

On a serious note, I trust it didn't actually bite you at all?
Rabies is quite prevalent out there.

No bites, I'm unhurt just down a £10 air bed and an old tent I only slept in to save money. The cars more comfy anyway.

Narrow escape, I'm not a heavy sleeper so woke smartly. A deeper sleeper might have slept a bit longer. Fox scratched the tent and bit/tore a hole in it and the bed.

Iirc foxes are quite fierce and have very sharp teeth so the bites can do real damage. Plus the Rabbies. I've got travel cover bit glad not making a claim.

I'll be staying in Carcassonne for another night. It's very photogenic and nice to be in and bags of history here. I'll be out for blue hour tomorrow, and glad not to drive tomorrow. Hotels walking distance from the old fort. ImageUploadedByTalk Photography Forums1441916199.048592.jpg

Glad to hear it

You are indeed correct about the teeth, although its not that common for them to do that sort of thing, well it never was, but I guess people have been feeding them,
leaving food around for them in that area, they are very opportunist and "he" was was just looking for an easy meal.

WCMUT: I don't like people, certainly not masses of them. Large groups of people annoy me. Carcassonne is teaming with people but at first light it's mercifully quiet. Seeing this without people in the way. Mega. Took images along the way but just enjoyed the place minus folk in the morning golden hour and blue hour. I'm hoping you post a link to full-size versions of these when you get home... (y)

Flickr, blog, threads, Facebook, Google plus. I'm findable. Photography wise this holidays so far been steller. Food wise it's been steller. Breakages (tent, air bed and tyre less so) and I'm only half way in. A nice snapped timing belt or a stolen camera or memory card failure and we'd call it house

Making it to Millau. For the light I'm going to have to wait this out but will nap in the car for an hour or two. The views awesome

Actually just driving over it was freeking awesome

I'm green with envy :-)

I'm green with envy :-)

It really is a marvellous feat of engineering. The whole road up from Beziers is actually, it snakes and winds it's way up, tunnels etc.

In France engineering iirc is the most well regarded profession, and it shows. These guys can build infrastructure we can only dream about, or experience if you visit their country.

Weather conditions are stormy, hoping some lightning comes in as that will be just the shizzle

This was to the envy show over Steves trip:agree::plus1:
Edit to place agreement in context

Going to Old Sarum airshow and seeing 2 spitfires displaying together.

Yes. But a double edged sword. What if by some radical turn of events that becomes the next pm.

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

They'd have to take votes off the SNP for that to happen. Every cloud and all that...........

A phone call this morning at 07:30 from my sister in law, ( who is on holiday in Turkey) asking us to go the hospital, our nephew was taken into intensive care lastnight, after a drunken night out the tw@ thought it would be good for a laugh to jump out of 1st floor window . He ends up on life support, fractured skull, fractured cheek, broken collar bone, broken ribs, fractures to his spine and to top it all off a bleed on his brain. What made me happy? the marvelous NHS nurse who was caring for him, she is the most professional and curteous person I have had the pleasure to meet.

He ends up on life support,
FFS! that's not what you need to hear is it?
I hope he pulls through in one piece

Can't argue about the Nurse comments either I've had cause to deal with ICU Nurses recently as well.

Although the NHS are no doubt a top heavy administrative mess, I have nothing but respect for the grass roots workers there. In my experience and it has been extensive in the past few years, they are excellent.

Bloody stupid thing to do , jump out of a window but who hasn't done stupid and dangerous things when p***ed. Hope he pulls through and all ends up well.
