WBMT.....What baffled me today

Why only ~ £2k when caught red handed?

Some drivers and speed humps.

Our road has speed humps but some drivers appear to be so incensed that no restriction is going to make them reduce their speed they are willing to scrape their car as they go over the humps.

Dave

WBMT, well, we had a lovely salad dinner tonight, I was clearing the plates and I could not understand why a piece of lettuce would not clear from my dinner plate! No matter how much I scraped it wouldn’t budge!

After about ten seconds I realised it was the pattern on the plate :(

Lesson, turn the light on:)

My elderly neighbour volunteered to dog sit a friends daughter’s dog.
Instructions were to hand feed the dog all meals and it only sleeps on her bed!

Needless to say once she had gone the dog in question got his food in a bowl and slept in the kitchen :)

I had a baffling thing at Tesco.

I take someone with health issues shopping and that's what we were doing. So, up and down the aisles we went and at one point a couple pushing a trolley said "Excuse me" which wasn't baffling in itself but what was was that I wasn't remotely in their way. It wasn't until later that I thought that they may have had some sort of vision impairment or some other physical thing... or something... which meant that I was somehow in their way although I couldn't really see how I was. You'd have to have been there. I suppose another explanation was that they were undertaking some sort of social experiment or just having a laugh. I'll never know.

It was just a baffling moment.

So did you move?

I've just rang a guy who advertises his services for car valeting and asked him if he could do my three cars and I was amazed by his answer.

"I don't want to be working outside this weather."

(It's a sunny day.)

What The Flip?

Good luck drumming up business that that attitude buddy.

I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to be doing physical work today either.

Perhaps I should l have waited until it was raining.

I cut the lawns and tidied up outside and washed a car today and hardly broke a sweat. It's hardly death valley in the NE today. I just found it staggering that a car valeter who advertises for work won't work on a sunny day but I suppose the playstation and benefits are difficult to resist.

Workman.... generally, they naff me off big time. I mentioned ,in this thread, that we've not long had a new front doorstep put in. The old one had a drop of 12"..the maximum, this one has a drop of 4" from the hallway. He has men working for him and, as I said in the first post, finished our doorstep, apart from filling in the gaps between the large grey rounded-top edging bricks with grey mortar . He's also been back to our neighbour to put right her doorstep after he and his workmen,on his own admission, had rushed the job so they could get off home at 5.00pm. My wife kept texting him and phoned him re the mortar and threatened to go onto the local FB if he didn't sort it..our neighbour's too rte the motor. He was going to come on Saturday..he didn't. He was coming yesterday..he didn't. Another 'word' from my wife today and he's sending his semi-retired worker to finish the job tomorrow at 12 noon. It's taken 3 months !!

I don't mind if tradesmen can't get to a job when they say they will because all sorts pop up on jobs that take longer than anticipated but why can't they just ;hone to say so and arrange another day ? We've had just three tradesemen over the years who were brilliant. We've had a company called Warmseal,a local business, to put in new patio doors, a new front door and fix locking mechanisms on two other doors and I can count them as being brilliant. They turn up at the time they say they will. It's some comfort to know that ,out there, there are some good trades people but they are an endangered species.

WBMT? Logistics.

I ordered 3 items from a global company in Australia as they had a winter sale on. They will ship to the UK but it would have been £35 rather than the $10 charge within Oz. I'm not in a rush and my brother is currently out there, returning to the UK in September.

One item (a cap) was dispatched with an Australian courier company and the other 2 are being sent with FedEx which is not unusual as they use different depots for different items.

However, this is the tracking info I got from FedEx!!!!.

This is for 2 vests $30 each, which are different to the ones I can get here (which are £28 each) Maybe I should have tried to pick up from Basildon!

I ordered something off eBay which was advertised as being in the UK, with delivery in 3 days.... It package took over a week to arrive.... It came from China and was delivered in Amazon packaging and by an Amazon van.... When I quizzed the seller about it he claimed he used Amazon warehousing ...

The Grauniad Guardian always does its best to be informative, as in the last paragraph from this article about an alleged murderer's arrest...

... "The bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864, reopened on Thursday after being closed for more than 24 hours. It typically has 11,000 to 12,000 vehicle crossings a day."

While we were away (so 4-6 weeks ago), a few potholes at the top of the road were repaired quite well (for a change!) WBMT is why they're now doing a full, proper resurfacing job on that stretch of road. Not complaining, just baffled as to why they wasted the potholing budget on an area that must have been scheduled for the proper resurfacing some time ago.

Perhaps potholes are local authority budget but major resurfacing is "Highways" budget.........and surprise, surprise they don't or rarely speak to each other  :headbang:

Possibly but the road is within the city limits and not an A road.

I suppose it's a bit better than a freshly laid new surface being dug up for scheduled works within days...

Radio 4 obviously liked their content at 09:00 (Women in Science & Engineering) that they immediately repeated it at 09:30.

I know people's attention span is shrinking, but that is ridiculous.

According to the R4 schedule, 09:00 was "The Life Scientific" and 09:30 was "Inside Health",,,

One little mistake...

My neighbour's son has just called round. "Do we have a parcel for him ? "No" He's had a messsage that an expensive set of lights has been delivered and left in their wheeli bin. He's had an Email notification with a photo that showed the drive and it's a different pattern.. very different to theirs. He's getting back to Royal Mail.

Last night I was compiling a shopping list and I decided I fancied some pear juice. I don't remember buying any before but I fancied some juice and I find apple and orange often a bit too tart. Tesco was my first stop but they didn't have any and neither did ASDA, At the checkout I asked the lady and she said they didn't sell it and suggested a tin of pears or the internet. I said I'd probably just buy some pears and run them through the smoothy machine.

Googling tells me that pear juice is pretty rare and also got me to this...

"Pears make for delicious juice. But pear juice might not be a good idea for everyone, especially for those who are sensitive to fructose. Pears contain sorbitol, a non-digestible form of sugar that can cause digestive problems like gas, quick bowel movements, and abdominal pain"

Well, I didn't know that. Looks like if I want to have some I'll have to make my own and watch out for tummy upset or just give up and go for mango.

Try Middle Eastern shops - they stock some what we might think of as a bit strange juices.

I can't think of any middle eastern shops here but there are some Asian and Chinese shops so I will try them next time I'm in town.

So reading this, Huw Edwards is getting done for being sent images?

Someone sent him images and some involved kids. He replied saying not to send them. Am I missing something here, someone could send me similar and I be in trouble? Not really sure that is fair?

Not really sure that is fair?
He pled guilty, so the obvious conclusion is that he thought he'd done something wrong.

I thought his guilty plea meant he had taken or otherwise created the images so I looked up what making indecent images meant. and found this -

As it says - "The court’s interpretation of ‘making’ indecent images is broad and the following can amount to making indecent images; opening an email attachment, downloading an indecent image, storing an image, and accessing a website where an indecent image “pops up”."

So it appears if anyone is sent an indecent image and opens it then they could be accused of the offence, but the above link also includes -

"The suspect accused of ‘making’ an indecent image must have the knowledge that the image is/is likely to be an indecent image or pseudo image of a child.

Therefore, in order for a suspect to be convicted, the prosecution need to satisfy the court that the suspect had the knowledge that opening an email attachment, downloading or accessing a website with pop-ups containing images would be likely to be an indecent image or pseudo image of a child.

A suspect who downloads, opens an attachment, or where an image/pseudo image pops-up using a device including mobile phone, laptop or computers could be found guilty of ‘making’ indecent image. If the CPS can satisfy the court that this a suspect did this intentionally and with the knowledge that the image is or is likely to be an indecent image or pseudo image of a child, then the suspect could be found guilty under s.1. (1)(a) Protection of Children Act 1978."

and

"There are limited defences available under s.1. (1)(a) Protection of Children Act 1978. A lack of knowledge is the main defence available to suspects. A suspect accused of ‘making’ an indecent image must have the knowledge that the image is/is likely to be an indecent image or pseudo image of a child. Therefore if the prosecution cannot satisfy the court that the suspect did not have such knowledge then the suspect cannot be found guilty."

Which suggests that someone sent such images without their knowledge would not be found guilty but I'm guessing it depends on what they do with the images.

Well, he was sent 377 images, of which 41 (so around 10%) were kids. Maybe after the first couple you stop opening the emails, and then go to the police so you can have that as defence? But it does seem quite harsh seeing as 90% were legally fine images.

Who would receive 377 sexual images and not either block the person or just get the hell off whatever platform they were on?

I've never been sent a single sexual image in my life. If I was sent one whoever sent it would be blocked or my account would be shut down.

I suppose it's wrong to speculate and jump to conclusions but for me it seems no great surprise that a man who had acted as he had in the past had sexual images of children on his devices.

I thought that too. Assuming he does not have a sexual interest in children why did he not go to the police immediately? I can only think he did not want to have to explain why he would be asked about the other images.

Because he may want the sexual images, which of course is perfectly legal and fine.

I wonder what the definition of a child is here? Recent atrocity in Southport committed by a 17 year old "child." Just wondered but it's irrelevant to this case as the children in the images are stated as being much younger.
