I'm trying to get the White Balance correct while shooting indoors with a warm looking Christmas tree in the background , but with AWB I'm loosing all the warmth and getting a very white background...............any tips on what WB settings I should use or should I just shoot as is and adjust in PP??

Thanks in advance

Neil

Hi Neil,

Have you tried the flash WB, if that does not work then PP would be the next best option.

The cloudy WB will warm it up.:)

If your camera allows... try setting the custom white balance manually and set it to 6000K and above and see how it turns out.

The issue seems to be mixed lighting sources. Use a adjustment brush to add the warmth back to the captured images.

Warm filter on the flash to match the tungsten ambient and set the white balance to "Flash" or "Daylight".

Edit. Just re-read your post and I'm not sure my suggestion is appropriate. I'm assuming you're suffering from "Mixed Lighting Syndrome".

Surely this is just a mixed lighting scenario, or am I missing something?

You need to balance the colour temperature of the lights, and in this case the easiest thing to do is just add a warm up gel to the flash and all will be fine.

As above, the problem here isn't as much auto WB, it's about balancing exposures and WB too.

I personally don't mind a std white flash lit subject with a warm ambient lit background, but that can be managed by warming the flash if that's what you want.

But I think you're suffering from slightly over flashing too if your background is turning out cool. This should be managed by keeping your subject to BG distance bigger than your flash to subject.
