Hi guys

Just wondered what tour favourite gear is when it comes to keeping yourself dry. Due to all the rain lately and the footy season about to start I really could do with investing in some good rain gear.

What I need is a Jacket and pair of bottoms that offer

waterproof material er obviously:cuckoo:
breathable
pockets for memory cards (a bonus)

ps. dont want to break the bank:thumbs:

Paramo! Nowt to beat it! After almost 40 years of tramping the hills, It's the best I have ever worn.

By the way, cheap AND waterproof do not go together!

Quite, simply the best. OP said he didn't want to break the bank though...
What's the price of a Paramo jacket these days, 200+

Compared to Arcteryx for example, Paramo ARE cheap!

For what it's worth, A good quality Goretex Jacket by one of the decent manufacturers will keep the rain off, and be breathable. Paramo kit is good too, tends to be a little warmer than the goretex shells, so ideal for all but summer - saves on a fleece under-layer :) Other advantage for the wildlife people is it's quieter than the goretex shells - doesn't rustle as much.

For the legs, I tend to get decent budget overtrousers, not too worried about breathability, they're more for protection, so I can sit/kneel anywhere and not worry about soggy knees, legs, bum for rest of day. Because of this, they end up getting ripped, so I certainly wouldnt buy anything fancy.

Best advice I can give as far as goretex jackets is - buy last years model / colourway in the end of summer sales up in the walking areas - lakes etc. They've become something of a fashion item, and if you're not bothered about the latest colours, you can get some really good deals. Also, bearing in mind, a decent Goretex Jacket will last 5+ years, it's going to be unfashionable well before it's not working well in any case.

Montane atomic dt 2.0
Light and packs tiny.
Very breathable It doesnt get too from sweat damp even when running in it.
not very tough though.

Arctyrex, North Face or Columbia...none are cheap, nothing good is cheap!

Earlier this year I was at a TP meet - location whipsnade.

The rain was so heavy my regatta jacket was seeping within 15 minutes and my jeans were soaked. I was kindly leant a pair of overtrousers which did a superb job of keeping me warm and dry - best bit, I'm told they cost about £15 from an army surplus store.

If you have a local store might be worth checking out.

Although I do like the look of that Montane Atomic gear...

either a coat or long Mac, always a brolly :)

I just wear my boots with water proof bottoms and a decent jacket thats abit longer so when i sit down my lower back is covered.
Try finding some thing with a bigger hood with a bit of rigidity.

Winter clothing is definately a case of buy cheap buy twice.

The expensive gear is expensive for a reason. For you wildlife togs, try getting some beaters trousers, superb for walking through wet undergrowth and stuff.

Stealth Gear Photographers' suit. The jacket and trousers are the best outdoor/winter gear I've ever had. I wore them constantly this winter out in Morecambe bay, or crouched in snow it kept me warm and dry and I can get my 7D with a 70-200 lens in the pocket.

Mind you it does bulge a bit.

My car. Window down. Click. Window up. Move on.

I was doing that in the rainy bits at forest of dean earlier this year :D

I have one of those leaf coloured waterproof jackets, cost about £80 or so I think, but keeps me dry for a couple of hours or so while dog walking, few biggish pockets too. Can't remember make, something like http://www.fieldandgun.co.uk/Product-Detail.aspx?id=2047 though, fishing tackle shops, gun shops or farmers stores often do them. Dad's had his on all day fishing and stayed dry. They also absorb some on the outside, I had a lovely cheap rubbery thing which kept me dry.. down to where it stopped! I think mine was from a military type shop too though actually.

Though this time of year I have a habit of getting wet and changing tbh

waterproof trousers £10 from http://www.leisurefayre.com/ (and I sat in a damp pile of seaweed at the weekend and kept bottom dry!!!)

and one of those leather cowboyish hats to keep the rain off my specs
http://shop.packyourbags.com/acatalog/White_Rock_Bush_Hat.html?utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=organic

and a waterproof (supposedly! :() top from Walrus golf wear - and it's really rubbish so I don't tend to bother, I just keep a top of some sort in the car to change into if needed.....

but I admit to being a bit of a fairweather photographer!!!;)

go to a fishing shop

i paid about £80 for a full suit and winter time i wanted to sleep in them they were that warm outside and the weather .... what weather it rained snowed you name it and i was still dry and warm and it splits into 4 or 5 pieces ie inner fleece and inner trouser fleece

it was -6 and i was still happy so they work lol

If you dont want to break the bank get some ex military stuff, its pretty good especially the older style "goretex" jackets with the wired hoods. Kept me dry well enough bombing about head out of my digger for years on excercise. Same goes for the trousers and as they dont cost a fortune your not worried about ripping stuff!

:agree:

if I have to get seriously wet in the rain, my motorcycle clothes are a major help in keeping me dry

:)

I second Arc'teryx. Some of the best stuff out there just now, expensive but worth it.

If you're not going to be moving around much then just get a long Helly Hansen PVC fishing jacket for about £40. It'll last a lifetime and 100% waterproof unlike any Gore-Tex/etc.

Have you got one of those factory / retail outlets near you (quick google search http://www.junction32.com/stores.html), that where I've got most of my walking jackets/trousers from from Wales and the Lakes. Berghaus or Rab are good makes or on a cheaper note tog24 gears worth looking at http://www.tog24.com/index.php

:agree: Good kit.

Hmm, a Toughie.
Buy Cheap - Buy Twice.

I have a £300 quid Berghaus mountain Gtx that I bought 10 Years ago in Germany.
it is still going strong, still looks good, and is still waterproof. (I wash it once a year in Nikwax stuff)

£ 300 sounds expensive, until you spread it over 10 years of use!!

Alternativly I have a 'Deertex' hunting jacket that is green one side, realtree the other that i use for walking the dog and a bit of rough shooting, good jacket, silent and waterproof.

Oh, and I use Army gtx for work, they are ok but they 'wet out' fairly quickly (but try and get the 'POL' gtx dungarees, they are great- for fuel ops blokes, they last really well)

Golf waterproofs, a Sunderland brand suit wouldnt break the bank.

Something like this

http://www.direct-golf.co.uk/golf_clothing/sunderland/club_3_waterproof_golf_suit_waterproofs/p9056

That looks pretty good. I like the style of it as I prefer something slim cut as opposed to being big and bulky.

I must add I will be using the gear when sat on the floor at the local footy. Therefore the bottoms have to keep my bum from getting wet. Will Goretex do this?

The most expensive golf waterproof stuff is by Galvin Green

Sunderland are very well thought of and have always kept me dry. (never sat for long periods of time so cant comment on that)

P.S You'll probably find cheaper suits elsewhere, I just did a quick google to link for you.

I have a set of Glavin Green waterproofs. The only word I can use to describe them is outstanding, they are damn expensive though! They keep you lovely and dry and are very light.

In the winter I have a fully lined gortex suit (aptly named a tellytubby suit by my wife) supplied for when I'm climbing with work, far too warm in the summer though.
