Yes
I usually wear some olive green, combat style trousers when im out and about but since its wet with snow everywhere, what do people use?

Im not all that fussed about getting my knees wet but it would be better to be able to last longer on the ground without getting other bits wet :p

you can buy waterproof trousers that you can put on over the trousers you are wearing. Check out any outdoor shop. I actually got mine from millets because I knew that I was'nt going to be wearing them much, therefore I did'nt want to spend a fortune on them.

I use these - used for fishing mainly but good for photography in the wet. There made of a soft material so no noise when moving.

If I know I am going to be doing a lot of lying down I have a padded waterproof suit - it is too big for me but is very warm and keeps me dry even if I do resemble a michelin man :)

I have waterproof trousers but rarely use them as found they caused too much condensation inside - I tend to keep some bin liners in my bag or pocket for laying or kneeling on for short periods

what about ski trousers? you might find them thin but they are warm, water, snow proof( to a degree of course)

North Face and Sprayway both do Goretex trousers.

You're far better off with something like Goretex as it's also breathable, which helps keep you dry if you wear them over the top of normal trousers. There's not a lot worse than trying to take pics in naff weather to then be wet and cold under your top layer too....

Sealskinz do waterproof and breathable sock and gloves. They're "Ultragrip" gloves are superb for photography as they have 'grip' blobs on the fingers and plams which aid with camera handling when wearing them.

THIS PLACE were the cheapest online retailer I found last week when my wife wanted a pair of the gloves.

Like your camera gear. You get what you pay for and cos it's waterproof on the outside doesn't mean it'll keep you dry underneath (i.e. if it doesn't breath you'll have moisture forming on the inside that makes you wet which then makes you cold, very cold)

The best solution I know of is a piece of Russian military gear they call "Gorka" - its a wind and waterproof two piece oversuit designed for mountain warfare. Its not man made material, but "duck cotton" which means its fully breathable whilst remaining waterproof.

Absolutely superb!

Comes in a variety of designs from different manufacturers, but I'd go with one of the SPOSN designs.

Have a look here:

Gorka-R's jacket is fully buttoned up the front, Gorka-S is a over the head job.

It also comes in a cammo design, called Gorka-E

Excellent stuff, I use it for photography and dog walking and all sorts!

I have a lot of cambats and so on from my crazy days. Maybe i'll get them out although generally they are not all that waterproof. Just quick drying.

Any over garments that golfers wear are usually warm and waterproof, especially golfers in the UK :) Plus there are always "golf sales" going on!

I have some wind and semi water proof trousers (if it rain's I stay dry but I can't kneel in puddles with them) and a pair of very thin, full waterproof ones that I can wear over the top if I need too. I'm going to pick up a decent pair of gortex trousers though I think and be done with it. Already have a gortext coat and gloves so may as well do it all proplery!

Full waterproof pants are pants........:)

I wear the leggings that loop over the belt of normal trousers, much comfier to wear.

IMWO.

Eh?

I was thinking snowboard trousers, they are usually a little less bright...

Eh?

Salopets I assume you mean, and they will definately not be thin (unless you just buy waterproof trousers). A decent pair will last you down to -20 probably and be fully waterproof (although you are looking at £100+ for a decent pair)

Snowboard trousers being less bright? They are the same thing, and if anything "snowboard trousers" will be more bright (if you class snowboard trousers as salopets made by the likes of Burton etc).

On the actual subject for the price of a decent pair of salopets I would suggest just getting some trousers designed specifically for this.

Go to TK Maxx, they normally have loads of snowboard/ski trousers, I've kept a pair of my old ones exactly for this reason. And they are black so no skier esque fashion mistakes can be made

Fishing overtrousers, with a couple of pairs of jogging bottoms underneath should do the trick.....

Not adverse to being muddy, but can't cope with being cold and muddy :-)

plenty of army surplus goretex overtrousers on ebay. I got some for £17.50 posted. Only problem is they're either jungle or desert camo pattern.

Remind me of a story!

I once brought a pair of track suit bottoms. Thought could be useful for a variety of purposes. Trouble is my cats used to run petrified because of the rustling noise they made as you walked!!!

The problem with ski wear is that its designed for well, snow... which unless you are out a few days of the year in the UK, you probably don't want that level of warmth!

I could point out all sorts of gear suitable for -40C, but all we ever get in the UK is just annoyingly cold and wet - not actually cold enough to make water freeze for any length of time.

So I'd certainly plonk for something lightweight, windproof but breathable. So thats gortex (or similar, can't remember the name of the other major player) or my lovely Russian Gorka 8)

I use my Gortex Hein Gericke trousers from the bike. OK, they were £160 but the knee protection (Hiprotech) is great for kneeling on and the other padding is great. Lovely and warm (so much so that you don't need any trousers underneath) They have re-movable lining and fully washable. Expensive but worth it (plus I need them for the bike too :D)

Any Army surplus store.
Waterproof camo pants are generally cheap as chips and mostly gortex. If they`re good enough for the armed forces they should be good enough for us mere mortals

Montane Terra Thermic are pretty good pants - SportsShoes.com offer a good price

Montane Terra Thermic Pant. The Terra Thermic Pants are the perfect combination of the Terra Lite Pants with a zoned, warm and wicking lining. They mirror the simplicity of a Tactel® outer shell with double layers to resist wear, but now also incorporate the useful winter feature of full length side zips, which act as vents from thigh to ankle.Combine this with DryActiv® Suede microfleece and mesh lining with Peaq® 30DWR in strategic points and the Terra Thermic Pants become ideal for active outings on cold, winter days in upland terrain.

RSV,

Actually, thats where a lot people get it wrong... military issue kit isn't by any means the best available... a lot of it is quite shockingly poor! Commercial gear is usually much better...

To be honest is you are sitting on wet ground for a lenght of time your ass will get wet nomatter what type of trousers you wear.I personallt use Proquip golf gear very light and breathable and i strap a camping mat rolled up to my bag, then just sit on that

Cathal

am i the only person that just gets wet and muddy?
Try spending 4 hours at Donna Nook in December in your wet gear and tell me how you feel about waterproof stuff then... ;)

Sure there are times that getting wet is fine but if you are never in a position where being wet bothers you, you don't get yourself in to situations that require waterproof clothing. You'd soon know if you did, if you were without it :D

Hi Try and Google Flecktarn. Lots of my shooting mates and I use their EX Danish military single skin DPM trousers. high waisted with braces zipped legs and single layer goretex with taped seams. Very waterproof and breathable. Lovely bit of kit and cheap as chips. Not warm of course but your base layer will provide warmth to suit the day.
I have spent hours scrunched up in a hedge bottom on bad days waiting for a bunny in complete comfort.

Is the Rambo knife optional?

Looks good for the countryside, but I wouldn't recomend it for the towns with plod reacting the way they have been.
A tip, wear cycling shorts on bathing trunks under your trousers, both these will dry very quickly, also a square cut out of an old camping mat (those foam ones) is handy to sit on. Wayne

Rambo knife? Sounds all a bit Amerikanski to me ;-)

The only person carrying a big knife is Putin :bat:

Yes, I'd probably not scare any townies like that

DeerHunter Clothing ..... made for the hunters.

Deerhunter Montana Jacket and Trousers comes in advantage cammo.

Great for the wildlife photographer as they hide your scent and are made of a noise free fabric.

Both come with gortex liners (100% waterproof) that are also removable for good weather and summer use.

The jacket also has a internal removable fleece, great for the cold winter weather.

Trousers have a high padded back, so you don't get rain running down your butt when you bend over.

Got a set myself and love them to death .....
