The ones intended to be worn inside hiking boots that aren't themselves waterproof. Thinking about getting some because I suffer from chilblains every winter and really don't want my feet getting wet at times as well as cold.

Do they stay waterproof after washing, or are you forever re-proofing them?

Any recommendations or ones to avoid?

I never got on with my sealskin socks, feet were as wet with sweat so a bit pointless for me.
I always use good quality boots with goretex or similar.

Goretex boots and good socks are the way. Gaiters if you are splashing through shallow water. Otherwise Muck Boots (the ones good to -40 degrees) if their weight is not a problem.

Aye, good merino socks, I've muck boots too, great in the winter.

No, sorry, you lost me there.

OK ... hiking boots that were waterproof but no longer are, apparently due to the Goretex interlining losing its effectiveness.

Point taken about feet sweating inside the socks. That's the main reason I asked the question.

Thanks guys.

You've been unlucky with the goretex lining, I've had boots with big holes in the leather but still waterproof due to the lining.
Anyway, the cheapest solution is the aforementioned Muck Boots.

This is quite literally magic.

Actually it's science, but that's basically the same thing, right?

I often go running through ankle deep water (one of my fave routes has some deep puddles for lots of the year) and with this in my socks my feet dry about 6 steps after the puddle. When I take my socks off, all I have is dry powder and mud on my feet and dry socks.

Magic I tell you....
