Yes
I was toying with the Idea of the Aquatec covers, then remembered a contact of mine with a garment manufacturing business.. so I asked the question could you make....
The answer was very promising..
I will be getting something made, even if its just for me, but would be interested if others would like the same? The best bit will of course be the price.. they will not be anything near £150.
Basically a waterproof camera and lens cover, velcro adjustable etc...

If so what features would you like to see? lets not go into colour at this stage! :)

Would love your input to create a bespoke cover that meets our requirements!!!

thoughts?

I assume he means rain/splash proof, rather than submersible :D

Velcro and waterproof are not two words that I would ever use in the same sentence!

I hope that wasn't a new years resolution you just broke? ;)

Ok, maybe "waterproof" is slightly OTT so Weatherproof? I envisage the fastening mech to be to the underside so rain etc.. would be dripping off!!

How about using cliplock type fasteners and adjustable straps? I'm sure velcro and dust do not mix.

I currently have a couple of storm jacket camera / lens covers which ae pretty good, although they could do with some improvements.

Long lens cover:
Nice & tight over the lens hood to stop weather & dust getting in that way
Good size hole for the lens tripod mount

What sort of design were you thinking?

Fancy working with me on this Richard? we aint a million miles away! ;)
could use what you currently have and improve on it??

I take it these covers would be designed so that the camera could be used while still in them? If so they'd need some kind of optically clear 'window' that the lens could see through.

Been looking at these things, and thinking how i might protect my camera come the start of the racing season. Last year i used a black sack.

I would like someone to make some kind of hat umbrella.

A bit like this but a bit bigger.

I would be intrested in this, but what camera / lens combinations, and showerproof or downpoor proof, as i'm wanting one for the 1dmk2n + 600mm f4.

The best i have seen and used are the Aquatech sports shooter range, If they are like these i will be very intrested.

But i'm not into saving a few quid at the expense of 7K worth of kit.

I hope you can come up with a very good design, as you would be onto a winner there.

Looked at the Aquatec and they seem the best, so would be looking to base the design on something like this. I am no designer, so feedback is required.
The rear woud need to be a clear material, or open but covered! so you can view the screen, and look through the eyepeice!
The rest can be adjustable with either Velcro, or cord, also needs a hole for tripod mount at the bottom... other that that its finger in the air stuff... will try to get some sort of prototype made ASAP!

make the back a big flap, you can shove your head under and keep dry at the same time...

I use a a plastic bag and some rubber bands ! ;)

Thanks,

Paul

The Aquatech are definatly the best, the biggest problem I can see is getting the correct material so its to the standard of waterproofing needed and being able to breathe so the camera and lens dont condensate.

I would recommend trying to use an Aquatech-ish design but changed enough so you dont infringe Patents etc.

I may have to buy one before your finished, but i can offer my gear up if you need to take sizes etc, as i'm only in North Sheffield, and dont mind helping in the design.

pm me if intrested

Heres the AquaTech range - was looking into them myself before christmas. especially as the Sports Basic at £69 and a an eyepiece adapter for another £25 didnt seem too expensive and would fit my 70-200mm.

That is the benchmark I'd be aiming for in terms of functionality and material...

Ok, benchmark changed. had a play with a storm shield cover highlighted above, and I thought keep it simple... which these are!!!

I have had a prototype made which needs a few tweakes but is rather functional for what it was designed to do!!!

Will get some pictures posted soon...I'd like to guage interest in how many people would be interested in one of these, branded as a TP cover?

Scoff - I look forward to seeing the images of the new product when a sample has been produced.

Fitted to my 30D with 70-200L lens attached, hole for tripod mount, unlike other designs, waterproof nylon, roughly put together. Elastic needs cutting and toggles fitting but its simple! the rear openening is larg enough to get your hand in and to look through the eye peice. didnt want a clear cover on back as the image would be distorted.
Currently working on one to fit a push pull zoom 100-400L with velcro fastner at front to keep cover in place!
Thoughts???

does it cover your head too?

msn in a bit buddy, thrash out that group buy discount and long term marketing partnerships :p

lol, ok ;)
erm I could understand why you would want your head covering, but no it doesnt at present! the thought there is that if your head is wet, and you introduce it inside the cover... its no longer waterproof! :)

ah but, mr cup half empty, how about a nice velcro strip to allow the follically challenged like myself to have a dry bonce while shooting:D
(thats another 10% of overall share for the idea....)

Sound idea! I'd be interested dependng on final design and price. :)

hmmmmmm, be carefull. looks very close to a design already imployed, you dont wanta break copy right law.

Nice idea, along the lines off what i have done just i used a black sack instead.

What would you class as a right price?? I have one in mind (if the costs work out) would like to know if I'm in the right ball park! ;)

I too would be interested if the price was right. To me that means as cheap as possible, what with being from Yorkshire.

Michael.

If its patented then its a non starter.. otherwise copywright does not apply :)
checking it out now...

Is this going to work like a one model fits all except for the obscenely huge lenses or will it be buy one for each lens and camera combination.

I am definately interested in purchasing one/multiples if the design holds up to testing and of course the price is cheaper than what is already available. If its not significantly cheaper, I could see people buying the tried and tested models for peace of mind.

The name is a TM but there is no patent for this product (how would you claim to have invented a plastic bag?) and copywright is only applied to published materials.. so off we go.... ;)

2 options at present.. the larger of the 2 is obviously backward compatibe... Price to be established but should be favourable or I wouldnt bother!! :)

Scoff - I think this is an excellent idea! I've been sat staring through a rain spattered window for most of the weekend :'(

I'm certainly interested if the cost is reasonable and we're confident in the design. I'd love to offer to help but have the designing ability of Esther Rantzen dentist.

Might be interested in this also - as mentioned I was looking into to getting some kind of rain protection so anything that fits the bill would have my curiosity, price and usability would be foremost in my mind

ditto, i was looking at the kata models, so i will hold off and watch this thread with anticipation.

Cool, sounds interesting, i shall keep an eye on this thread. Shall stick to my plastic bags fo now lol.

Possible problems with the one in your image scoff. There's no way to gain access to the lens barrel to zoom/focus and the cover seems to be fixed in place at both the lens and the tripod mount which would make it hard for the lens to focus automatically or tend to pull it out of focus as you move.

The material is so light you can zoom no probs holding the cover and twisting. and it did not hinder focusing on any of my lenses that I tried with it.
2nd larger prototype is being collected tomorrow :)
Once I've got a production price they will be made available.. Hopefully next week :)
