Hi guys. I have put a Pamaro jacket on my Xmas list but was wondering if anyone can recommend alternatives that are maybe cheaper or even better. I don't want camo as I will be using it aside from photography. Cheers.

A visit to your local outdoor centre should provide you with all the kit you need. I used our local GoOutdoors.

And my local one stocks Paramo for you to try - so i guess most branches will. Also take whatever you think you may want to put in your jacket pockets, the pockets are vastly different sizes between jackets. May also be worth bringing your rucksack if you have one to see how accessible the pockets are and how comfy the jacket is with a rucksack on.

ps if you do decide to go for Paramo, take a look at the Halcyon - loads of big pockets. Also take a look at the Paramo ebay store, you may fond an occasional bargain.

+1 for go outdoors knowledgeable staff and great prices...........and NO i don't work for them

Thanks guys. I was planning a trip down there anyway. I was just wondering if anyone used the gear or what anyone used instead. After all 2 to £300 on a jacket isn't a decision to be made lightly

i am on my second paramo jacket, actually nothing wrong with the first except that a) it won't come clean, and B) Meg dog has nibbled the pocket looking for treats, it still keeps me warm and dry and its 8 years old, i wash and proof it once a year, my new one is actually from the seconds store on Ebay, it was a second because of the lining bobbling this was treated and sold as a second, bonus was it was £100 instead of £240, personally i wouldn't have anything else

If you want to save some money the Craghoppers Gortex stuff is good value for money, I think they will have that at Go Outdoors.

If you are wanting something for all year you may need something that can take layers underneath.
I allowed myself to be sold a Buffalo pertex shirt many years back. It was great for out door activities but was not ideal for standing around in.
Now have a Mountain Equipment coat which cost best part of £300 over 8 years back. It is still as good as the day I bought it, gets worren every cold/rainy day.
Definitely a case of buy quality and cry once, buy cheap and cry often.

You don't need to spend that much - I use a Berghaus Gore Tex jacket for hillwalking which I got in a sale (think it was £150 or so) - but some of the budget stuff is decent eg Craghoppers mentioned above at around £120 and also very good are Keela (Scottish company) at around £130: http://www.headtothehills.co.uk/reviews/94-keela-munro-jacket.html Paramo is excellent too of course, just a wee bit more £££ (I use Paramo Cascada trousers for winter hillwalking and they are ace). Also, wearing layers is best underneath so you can regulate temperature by adding or removing stuff - so eg: a base layer top (not cotton) with a fleece or pertex on top and then a waterproof outer layer for rain/snow.

Be ware of fakes. I have friends who sell The North Face brand and they get a lot of people in their shop complaining about items they bought on flea bay or similar. Very difficult to tell the fakes but they dont use the correct breathable fabrics.

I find several thin layers best and not restrictive. It's also easy to shed a layer and roll it up small to put in your camera bag

I like Berghaus stuff personally as its decent quality and not stupidly priced and have a couple of pairs of Craghoppers trousers which aren't very stylish but are excellent for walking in

If it's for all year use bear in mind that some people find Paramo waterproofs too warm unless the weather is cold, as they include what is effectively a thin fleece layer. Other than that, they're excellent.
