Hi
I have an assignment to take pictures of water.
Part of the assignment is to study our photographers.
Does anyone know the name of a photographer who I can read their book.

Lee Frost has a range of books on creative and themed photography which should get you going.

Also look up Jennifer Wu - some amazing water images, tips and advice from her

Reflections from water can play havoc with your meter readings - so preparation is key for bright backgrounds.

You can use the bright background in your favour and create great silhouettes.

You can photograph abstract patterns in the water by trying different angles, points of view and long lenses.

But for someone who is starting out and learning on a photo assignment any camera will do - but of course beware of splashing, salt laden sea air and sand etc.

All part of the learning process and understanding how to protect your gear - basic but essential advice

Although river/sea will be part of this assignment, it will also involve a lot of droplets, puddles and an attempt at some artistic licence.
The aim is to learn about camera settings and how lighting may effect your shot.

you don't need specialist kit unless you are going actually underwater , although if you are going wheres theres a lot of spray you might want a waterproof cover (even make one out of a ziploc bag) and a uv filter to protect your front element

Find some frozen puddles with trapped air, bubbles, patterns, lines and leaves going through them

If you have a polarizing filter get in close, play around with different angles, high, low, oblique, shoot into and across the light reflected in the ice and you will get some super colour spectrums and abstractions.

Lots of potential for artistic licence with this theme

Hi John - just a quick thought - you could always join or ask if other TP members in your area would be up for a meet to photograph water.

The group meets are always full of ideas and inspiration.

Your project has inspired me - I'm off with the camera in a minute to see what icy puddles I can find.

Not meaning to tell Granny how to suck eggs - but beware of condensation forming when bringing any camera into a warm house from the cold.

Good luck with the challenge anyway

Hi John - thought I'd post an example of a low angle shot taken this morning just as the sun reached this puddle.

Gotta say - your thread inspired this shot, so thank you for getting me out of the house this morning hunting for frozen puddles in the woods.

There is an old rusty bar in the water top right but I have no idea why there are such sharp triangular ridges in the ice.

I could only think the wind was causing the bar to move and create ripples as it slowly froze - but the ridges had already started to melt by the time I found the puddle and the melting water was forming curves in sharp contrast to the diagonal lines of the ridges.

The gold is the sun through the trees hitting the sloping face of the ridges and blues / contrast / vibrance boosted in PS.

I'm a fan of abstracts ............ ;)

This may not be the effect you are looking for but it gets me out of the house :-)
