Watches

My wife is off to New York quite soon and if i see something here then i MAY get it cheaper over there as there is a Breitling store near her at Woodbury Common outlet. The warranty may be an issue though depending on what make of watch as some have international warranty and others don't...Someone on another forum pointed me towards a company called Gemnation, anyone heard of them or eat with them as the Bremont Alt1-Zulu i liked is at a very very low price--is it to good to be true as they often are?
Don't forget sales tax of 8.75% in New York, other states are more international purchase friendly with a local tax rebate at the airport. Not sure whether they still are but Louisiana was good for shopping. Then there is also 20% VAT due when it comes back into the UK. So don't forget to do your sums; hope she'll have a good trip.

You really are asking for it now, if the threads about grey imports are anything to go on...:D

VAT ticks me off considerably. It's a hell of a cheek, when most people are paying for purchases out of income that's already been taxed and in some cases (fuel, booze, tobacco etc) it's imposed on the price + the duty!

LOL I know it is a dangerous topic, but I'd hate to see his wife end up in prison for tax evasion. A big men's watch like that is rather obvious and you'd be looking at about £8-900 in tax so considerable sum of money.

I don't take my phone into the gym. And how does your phone measure your heart rate?
An HRM is considerably cheaper ! smart watches IMHO are another piece of tech that hype and marketing has persuaded you that they are essential!

@dejongj that sounds like an amazing shopping experience! I was impressed when I got offered a coffee when buying a car!

LOL I'm under no illusion that we are paying for it, but hey if it is still so much cheaper than the UK, well I like a bit of indulgence :) And that is my point, both online and on the high street it is not a brilliant experience shopping for luxury goods in the UK. Unless perhaps you really don't have to worry about any budget...

I'm not denigrating anyone's choice just saying that I don't see the point given that Mobile phone's now do everything!

They don't look pretty on your wrist though. You cant go swimming with it. Like had been said here before this forum bubbles with massive overspending on a lens but that's not bad is it? Do people really need 500mm F4 to take pics of garden budgies? Nope I don't need to spend 5k onna wrist watch but I choose to.

Amen to that

And as I explained my watch has functions that my mobile does not. That point seems to have been ignored though.

Guys, this thread isnt about what to spend and what not to spend on a watch. If you need a thread like that you could easily start one yourselves. This is me asking about particular watches within my budget and where i can obtain it from. Cheers.

Treated myself to An Alpina Seastrong on a mesh bracelet. Will be treating my self to a Breitling if Leicester win the league!

I told you in the third post where to go, wander down to the Argyll Arcade and try some on!

Whatever you go for, my suggestion would be go for it whole-heartedly. I had similar thoughts and I looked around many new watches. However I ended up buying a really nice watch which was from my birth year. Not the most imaginative approach, but I do get more enjoyment from it than from a new watch, and I enjoy putting it on every day as much as when I first bought it. Added to that, if you buy a new Omega (for example), Omega can churn out thousands of those. If you buy a nice Omega from the 60s (like a .321 speedy) it's one of only a small and finite number available.

Some of the Omega, Rolex and Heuer models from that time are also beautiful, even having modern 'homage' versions of them released today.

Oh - of modern watches the NOMOS company are worth having a look at. Outside of the majors they are one of the few to have designed and made their own movement. Their designs are very crisp and maybe love or hate for some, but IMO they make nice watches, and picking up a lot of watchmaking and design awards these days.

Rolex !!! You know you want to :-)

Thanks again folks. I have decided on a new Bremont ALT1-WT with a white face and black strap. Was very close between that and a Breitling Colt ( silver face model)but decided it was more elegant looking and as I'm going to wear it as much as I can in various situations( t-shirt and jeans to a suit). Thanks for everyone's help.

Very nice choice. That's a classy looking watch. In a few weeks you'll get the COSC paperwork through and Bremont will chuck in a little freebie. I won't spoil the surprise for you ;)

Enjoy and thanks for letting us know.

Sorry Mr Bump, i have yet to buy the Bremont. I viewed a few different makes and as per my thread earlier i just couldnt make up my mind and still not sure its the right watch for now however a few days thinking and its the Bremont that i keep thinking about and i know if i dont buy it then i will end up regretting it hence i will be buying in the next week or so.

Arrrggh i have been fighting with this all week. The more i search the more other watches appeal to me. Decided to stop/think for 2-3 weeks before buying. I have saw a Ball watch and a Tudor that i like as well now. Both are a bit cheaper than the Bremont and im not buying as an investment, im buying because i like the watch so it may make sense to get one of those. Starting to wish i hadnt started reading up on the different watches and just went to jewlers and picked one from the shop there and then....

Loving my GMT with my fresh pepsi bezel

The servicing aspect is an interesting point. I have over a number of years bought 7 Rolex watches I have 3 of my own and have given the other 4 away as gifts to my family.
My first Rolex is a 1966 explorer I have had this watch for almost 50 years, I wore it almost constantly for the first 35 years. During the 50 years it went back to Rolex for servicing twice. The first time it was a battered looking non working watch as I had a very rough manual job. The first service was about £200 I have had it serviced again late last year at acost of £400. So on average it has run 20 years bewteen services. I must just say that when it comes back from Rolex it just looks like new. The quality of their workmanship is just amazing.

You can have a look on tz-uk.com, same as TP but for watches. Alternatively, just find some local second hand shops. You'd be surprised to find some nearly new watches there with a considerable discount.

Agree, tz-uk is a great resource for watches. Chronotrader is another, although more brand specific, but great place for Heuer and Omega.

I empathise that it feels a bit full on trying to commit to something. But unlike a camera which will be superseded or eventually likely need replaced, choose a watch well and you'll be enjoying wearing it for decades to come. When you track down and get something that really fits your taste, you enjoy every time you put it on.

As im not bothered to much by brands it opens up loads of different watches. I want a chronograph type watch, not to small on my wrist. Sonething like the Ball Trainmaster Worldtime Chronograph appeals to me as did the Bremont from earlier and various Breitlings.

considered a speedmaster? Nice and classic although mine is the reduced model. about 38mm.

Considered a Speedmaster but decided it was too much to spend on something to match my motorbike (Triumph Speedmaster!) IF I spotted a Snoopy one at the right price, I might consider it but not just as a companion to the bike.

image.jpeg I should have remembered to update this thread. What i did was do nothing for a few weeks to see if 1 watch stood out in my mind, that way i was sure to get what i wanted and not because of a sales pitch of sorts. I ended up buying a Bremont Alt1-WT( white face/black strap with deployment buckle). Feels great on my wrist and feels quite special- loving it and know for me it was the correct choice and that few weeks wait allowed me to be sure. It also allowed me a 15% discount which we didnt know about until 2 days before buying due to the wife working for the NHS.

Nothing mentioned about a freebie on any forums i can see- pm me as i hate surprises.

Nice watch, Mark.

As a result of this thread, I also bought a watch recently.

It is a Citizen Eco-Drive and the first one I have bought since my Breitling nearly 20 years ago.

Never been off my wrist since bought!

I've got a couple of Citizen Eco-Drive watches. One is a Red Arrows radio controlled one and the other is "normal". Wear the normal one as a holiday watch since it's also waterproof down to 100m + so I don't have to worry about it while snorkelling etc..
