I understand that some raise money for charity through this ice bucket water challenge.....but millions die of thirst each year or through water borne infection......why waste perfectly good water.....just donate the cash to water aid instead and then you do some good without freezing your b*****ks off......water is precious ....especially to those who need it.......

Saw a meme to that effect today.

Seems to be a theme on here.

A charity awareness idea takes off. It gets criticised.

Why is that?

As for water - how much have you used / wasted today?

I criticised it from the first time I ever saw it and that was over 2 weeks ago. I just feel that it an awful waste when so many are in need of fresh water.......

A bucket of water, seriously, if they were doing it in the village where they needed it fair enough , water is the one thing we're never short of in the UK, we usually get 9 months of it every year.

If a bit gets wasted here and benefits somebody who needs a well or water purification there what's the problem.

You worry too much

It hasn't been long since the hosepipe ban of 2012. The issue isn't the amount of rain that falls in the uk, but our inability to invest in water capture and distribution. Profits before performance, but the you could say the same for all the utility companies.

As for wasting water, how many times have we flushed the loo today, run a dishwasher, had a shower, washed the car. We 'waste' water every day as it's easily available, just turn a tap on.

I say well done the charity, promoting awareness of a relatively unknown illness, in an interesting way that's taken off.

Anyone seen the foo fighters video?

jeez................how would you suggest getting that particular bucket of fresh water to so many of those in need of it. By all means donate to water aid, of whichever charity you wish support but why criticise someone else for doing a fantastic amount to raise awareness of something? I also say well done to the charity for the way they've managed this

What's the figures and from where? Country? Area? Reason for the water borne diseases? To be honest, Here in the UK you are more likely to get infected by coming into contact with untreated water rather than your house water supply. There's countless diseases out there in rivers, lochs, lakes etc. Look at Andy Holmes for example, the olympic rowing gold medalist who died from weil's disease in 2010 just from coming into contact with water that was contaminated by rat urine. There's about 50-60 cases each year in the UK, but that's cases and not deaths. I've not heard of a lot of contaminated water supplies in the UK. If they are then it should be easily sorted by reporting to your local council or water supplier. There's so many health and safety rules nowadays.

To be honest a few buckets of water is insignificant to the amount of water that gets wasted carelessly through everyday use. Having taps on for longer and more powerful than you need them, paddling pools that get shat in and emptied within five minutes, etc etc.

I'll be honest I waste more water than I use properly. I bought my kids and dogs a sprinkler for the garden with all this hot weather and they would quite happily play out in the garden for hours with it. Let alone the amount I use to wash the car often and me and a few friends made a hay bale swimming pool. I'll leave that to your imagination as to how much water that took to fill.

Have you never seen the adverts on tv from water aid.

Yes we all do waste water to an extent but my argument is that there are other ways to raise money without having to waste water......
It's just my opinion, and though I sound like a grump, I have been involved with wateraid and I know the importance of this vital resource.

I've no intention of belittling water aid, though there are other charities out there........

Don't watch a lot of TV and when I do my shows are never on so I record them. Watching adverts on recorded TV in my house is a big no no

How is it a waste of water?
Water on the ground either enters the water table or evaporates, then it rains and either falls into a river or reservoir, or back into the water table or evaporated and so it goes on.

Water is a cycle, so it's not wasted. Even the water we use at home is recycled in some way or another.

If you can come up with a cost effective way for us to pipe our excess water into Africa then by all means please let us know.

The only thing that is annoying me about the ice bucket challenge are the people that just do it for fun and don;t even mention why they are doing it.

all of the celebs ive seen do it have mentioned the charity.
Yeh every celeb one I've seen they have mentioned it and even saw Charlie Sheen dump 10k over himself instead of ice "because money will help and ice will just melt" lol.

Shouldn't we be celebrating people doing things for charity? Seems just a tad churlish to complain because they use some water which wouldn't have gone to the people who need it anyway.

We have an excess of water here. If we had a way of magically transferring it to those that need it fair enough.

Crazy though that I pay Anglian water £45 a month for water yet oxfam can do that for £10 for a village!!! Lol.

Write to them.
Tell them youre willing to pay only ten pounds a month.
Then we'll all come round and watch you trogging back and forth for a bucket of water every time you take a sh.... :-)

This is the problem i have with it, seems like the stupid neck nomination. Everyone is being a sheep and fallowing the heard not even knowing why there are doing it or giving to charity when they do do it.
I was reading/watching something regarding this the other day, saying at if everyone that had actually done it had given the £3 or what ever it is meant to be they would have multiple times what they have actually raised.

Although the no makeup selfie thing for example that particular charity saw a huge rise in donations.

And this ice bucket challenge you have celebs for example who are donating up to $10,000s.

Sure you'll always get people that do it without donating, but maybe they can't afford to donate but still want to help keep the awareness going.

But I guess some people always have to pick out the negatives.

Ok. I always admit when I may be wrong. I understand that some good can be done by raising awareness through social media with quirky ideas.....I still don't agree with wasting Clean water but I do think that any action that creates a positive reaction can only be good.......I just hope that everyone who does the challenge actually gives some money.......I shall be making a non water donation tomorrow to a good cause

@Mr Bump

Firstly, I can't see where you are getting off with the assumption that I have done "JOG ALL" ...... saying that you have no knowledge of me or my personal life.....but just to quench your lack of my personal charitable achievements etc....

I recently stopped an old lady from falling.
I regularly provide food to homeless people by buying sandwiches etc.
I support local charity and events.
I help my neighbours and friends.
I volunteer to help local events.
I give up my time to teach in the community where possible....

These are just a couple of things that I have done recently.....all without wasting water.......

Have a look at this pretty picture Amazing aint it? Anything that has a value they will find a way of transporting it. The whole world is surrounded by water and in this day and age it is possible to treat it making it good for human use,or at the very least for feeding crops. That is where my arguement ends about wasting water.

@archangel take no notice, I hear what you are saying

Let me relate to everybody a very short story from just a few days ago.....

I was sat in the office talking with a colleague, we were talking about a cheque for £500 that we had just posted off, just then we over heard some others talking about the ice bucket challenge thing - Now the £500 we had just sent off was so that a well could be sunk in a remote part of the world, enabling the people of a village to have fresh, clean, drinking and cooking water for the first time.

Whilst it is great that awareness has been raised with this ice bucket challenge it has now become obscene in my opinion

Why does it cost £500 to dig a well? Surely you just need a bit of hard work and some basic materials. Enough aid has been given to 3rd world countries over the years and hardly any of it gets sent to where its supposed to. Maybe the people in the village could try and help themselves and do some digging?

This Ice bucket challenge is raising awareness and money for something that is an issue around the world, not just one country thats already had billions sent to it and will help people who can't do anything to help themselves cure the disease. If a little bit of water is used in the process, so what.... there is plenty more in the sea.
