Fortunately I'm not about to relay a tale about her overnight stay in High Wycombe.

As summer rolls around, I have the perennial problem of keeping my girlfriend away from wasps as she has a real fear of them. It should be easier with the amount of scented candles and such we put out when it's time to barbecue or sit out but these don't seem to repel the little blighters any more.

We also have one of those electric tennis racket swatting devices but it is irritating to spend our time together chasing yellow-and-black buggers around the garden.

Does anyone have a more practical solution to keeping these away from her when we're outside? Candles, smells, anything of that nature. I don't really want to keep her inside, she looks nice with a tan. :suspect:

If you use meat and get maggots instead the local bird population will like them and you can place them in a convenient spot for taking photos !

We had five nests in our roof last year and one in the shed where I keep the straw for the poultry. I managed to only get stung once when I went to get some straw and found the nest - or rather they found me and followed me inside - imagine the scene. Me and dog running around woods and then into conservatory with wasps following and attached to clothing - stripping layers off and leaving them behind as I tried to get rid of the wretched things as I do react quite badly to the stings.

I think I might try a coke bottle or ten as well and hang them from every upstairs window in the hope that they won't nest so close again and I can open windows this summer

you may even catch a queen this way, in which case the wasps will relocate their nest.

The idea is quite a good one and a adaption of the jam jar of old.

But I must admit to ( almost ) PMSL at the above quote
Wasps feed meat to the larvae the Queen is only outside the nest while she is building it.
once a few ( half a dozen or so) workers have grown the queen never leaves the nest.
the queen dies the nest dies at any stage of its life.
Once there are no more larvae to feed they then switch purely to "sugar"
hence the fallen fruit and the "drunk" wasps
Oh and as I have said on many occasions you go swatting wasps
they WILL swat back. Just leave them alone and the chances are they will not sting!

I can approach an active nest containing up to several thousand wasp
and stand within a foot or so, as long as I am not directly in the flight path
they ignore me.
I wouldn't touch one though without wearing a bee suit.
If they feel threatend they attack!

Funny how no one twiggs that shoeing(sp) away by flailing the arms about has the opposite effect and attracts them.
Anyways howz about this £19 from Ikea, seen it elsewhere but where eludes me at the mo.

I guess you didn't read my post then :D

I cant believe you let the girlfriend out, id never do that with the wife.
I find that wasps dont like the smell of the washing up liquid in the bowl she's chained to, handcuffs also stop the waving of the arms too. I did try plastering her with jam, and tying her up in the back garden once, i thought it might help her control her fear. Luckily all my injuries have now gone and i am talking with my normal deep voice again.
Good luck with it, and i hope you find a way.
Dean;)

I've actually given the bottle idea a try after seeing the link posted in here, will see if it works over the next few days :)

The wasps round here are like chuffin' planes, bouncing off the windows like an un-leashed ping-pong ball.

Call it ironic but there is a add on the top banner of this thread for pest control equipment including removal of wasp nests..
