Yes
Got an Indesit Washer Dryer - Do have an engineer booked via warranty but not able to come over for another week. With the wife unwilling to hunch over the bath washing clothes, just checking to see if there could be an easy fix.

Basically the machine works fine when washing, but about 5/10 mins into it there is a burning smell. Took the top off and no obvious smoke or burning but its very noticeable. It smells IMO to be a rubbery/motor burning type smell rather than paper type. Ideas?

Seriously ... wait for the engineer, electrical burning type smell doesn't sound like anything you should be messing with :)

Also they may not rectify the fault if you continue to use it

Got any friends/family/launderette locally?

Shouldn't be removing the top or any part if it's still under warranty. Wait for the engineer.

Cheers guys... just wanted to make sure it was nothing 'silly', a friend said it could be the fuse (its wired into the wall, not as a plug) but checked that and all fine... no plans to tinker!

A rubbery smell could be a drive belt, potential DIY fix.
If it's a motor on the way out (electrical burning smell) it will be more tricky and if the machine is getting on a bit a replacement might be better than getting a new one fitted.
It shouldn't be that difficult to get it out into good light and take the back off for a proper look.
Usually you can do this without disconnecting anything, but the hoses are easy to uncouple anyway.

Washer dryers are the most unreliable things on the planet. Bin it. Get a proper washer with a decent spin and a separate dryer. If white goods break down in the first year then they're junk and should be got rid of immediately. No good will come of keeping it.

If you have a warranty then getting it fixed that way sounds best! :)

Agree that washer/driers aren't as reliable, though I'm not so sure about binning something you've paid several hundred pounds for without making best use of warranty to keep it going. How old is it?

Cant remember how old, will see what the guy says when he comes.

Agree, but space means we need a washer/dryer.

If you must have one then go for a quality manufacturer and avoid indesit, Hoover and similar as they're clothes wreckers and not very reliable. I find on a fast spin most clothes are air dry in a couple of hours. I think Lakeland make electric clothes airers that might also do a good job but you'd need some space about 5 feet square somewhere for it to live.

Our previous 2 washing machines were both Indesits - and cheap one at that. First one lasted 13 odd years and the 2nd lasted 12. During the first one's lifespan, Mum managed to kill 2 Hotpoints.

Nightmare! My daughter's washer dryer packed in last week. Too expensive to warrant a repair, so £500 unexpected present for her and a hole in my pocket for me.

how much !!!

my last dryer was 80 quid on ebay (admittedly thats only a dryer - but its a meile and has done sterling work since)

Miele all the way (if I can afford the up-front) for me. Our washing machine must be more than 10 years old now, and still works as well as it every did. 10 year warranty on moor and bearings when we bought it too.

With all this washing machine comparisons the next thing people will be trying to say is that the likes of Kodak and Nikon are on a par with Canon.

Anyway...burning smell could be a faulty stat not turning the heater off, saw one a few years back that was sited in a garage below the boiler, stat had failed and washer had gone on fire along with the boiler and garage...use the laundrette until the engineer arrives would be my advice

i'd never buy another Indesit (or Indes**t as i've been told they are referred to in the trade) appliance again. Get it looked at asap. Maybe consider getting a reconditioned Bosch or Miele depending on repair costs.

Indes*it, I'd have to agree. Hoover - well, I've had a New Wave Plus 5 for about 12 years, never skipped a beat.

Trouble is when people recommend brand A because they have had one for 10, 15, 20 years they are describing a machine built when that brand built great machines, the same may not be true today of that brand. Generally I think we'd all agree Miele still build great stuff but it is very expensive initially. So if you can afford it and you are sure you won't do a kitchen refit in 3,5 or whatever years then buy the best you can afford. Not actually sure Miele do a washer/dryer.

Miele, followed by Neff, Bosch and Siemens (in no particular order) seem to be considered the best. I don't know if it's just a coincidence that they're all German.
