Washing machine gone bang

I'm not sure the Sale of Goods Act covers buyers in the situation where a reseller has gone bust - there is still no direct contract with the manufacturer, so you are relying on goodwill and their desire to retain you as a future consumer of their offerings/word of mouth recommendation.

At least the OP can get in touch with someone from the Executive Office who handles the MD's emails, which may be more likely to do more than discount the repair by £30.

Its still worth enquiring how long their goods are expected to last - because if you bought it with a reasonable expectation that it would last more than three years then they (the manufacturer) has misled you

afterall the warranty is usually with the manufacturer , not the resseller - and if it broke only just out of warranty then that might not be deemed reasonable

regardless of the absolute legal situation if they think you are going to be a big pain in the arse who is going to take the matter up with newspaper consumer advice, watchdog etc then they are more likely to pay a little to shut you up.

It's also another reason to buy any goods over £100 with a credit card as they have joint liability with retailer and you can pursue them for refunds/replacements/repair costs.

All the advice given above is well intentioned, but misplaced!
You have no rights with the manufacturer, since your contract is with the reseller you purchased it from.
It should be them who you're having it out with.

If you insist on going direct, then you'll need to look further up the ladder, rather than berating the frontline script readers.

It's worth a try, thanks :)
