Spending a few days in Warsaw before joining our photography group for a few days in Bialoweza photographing wildlife.

Anything photogenic? I guess it will not be on a par with Krakow (not been there either), but suggestions welcome. (we do have a Lonely Planet pocket guide).

You're guess is right, Krakow is great, plenty to see and lot's of different photo opportunities. It has the advantage that the russians and germans between them left a lot of it still standing after 1945. Warsaw was the exact opposite, there are some older looking buildings but they're nearly all replicas that have been rebuilt after 1945. If you get the chance, my suggestion would be to try to get to Krakow for a day or two (it was about 2 hours by train from Warsaw).
I was shown around Warsaw by a friend who had lived there for 15 years and we were bored after about 5 hours (but didn't go into any galleries though). However, for street photography (not really my thing) I'd say Warsaw had better opportunities than Krakow

Thanks Paul, we'll leave Krakow for another time. I know Warsaw was more or less obliterated when the Russians were advancing in 44/45 as my old landlady fought as part of the Polish resistance and you did not want to mess with Danutia. Will try a bit of street photography, want to check out the 24-120Z on the Z8..

Come back from Warsaw. Gastronomically I have gained 5Kg. I'd say Warsaw has enough attractions to keep you going through the weekend if you mix in some culture as well as some exploration. I did appreciate the buildings that came up after 1945, especially the smaller details, and that will necessitate another visit (after the diet).

Spending €20 on a Chopin piano concert is certainly recommended.

Gastronomically, I recommend Cud Miud and Radio Cafe in the downtown area and a very nice fancy restaurant called Rozana 30 mins walk to the south of the Palace of Culture. Pierogi (dumplings) were not disappointing wherever we were (we were also in Biaolowieza for a few days). Local beer also excellent.

How was the wildlife aspect of your trip to Biaolowieza, as in what did you see?

TIA;)

Excellent.

Saw plenty of Bison (and got chased in the process), Elk, red squirrel and Pine Martin

Birdwise: Whitetailed Eagle, Goshawk, Buzzard, Jay, Blue/Great/Coal/Willow/Marsh/Longtailed Tit, Nuthatch (both 'races'), HAWFINCH!!!, greenfinch, Woodpecker (GSW/MSW and LSW, Olive headed), yellowhammer, raven. Plus much, much more.
