Workshop Warrington Studio Meet 19th July

Yes, this is a difficult one and, as an advertiser, I do get a bit pe'ed off at some of the obvious spam postings and 'recommendations' that get posted.

But Carlo is a beginner in studio lighting who is hosting these studio sessions for other beginners - from the posts, it's clear that there is no instruction, no leadership, no profit and no potential for profit, so all that he is actually doing is sharing his facilities for the benefit of other members.

Lencarta is an advertiser who is providing paid studio instruction not many miles away from him, I don't feel that what he is offering will affect Lencarta in any way, so no harm done...

precisely the reason why we have a 'contact us and we'll talk' policy in place. I would much rather have these discussions in private as it isnt fair on any of us to have to bash this about..

Hi all,
I'm very interested in learning flash photography especially portrait images with a speedlight off camera etc. If this session will introduce me to this and allow me to discuss and try, I would like to pencil myself in on this session. I just need to confirm I can finish work a little earlier.

You can see my gear list below of which I already have a 580EX II but that is it. I'm thinking of purchasing a set of triggers and stand etc so if items like this will be available to try it would be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark, do you want me to add you to the list?

cheers

The advertise but in bold....that was the point I was making via pm, and the reason we are looking at it. So is it advertising or is it doing fellow members a favour?

I can always re-phrase to keep within guidelines

we are not planning to ban or clamp down and we dont want to ban these sorts of events from the forums as they are good for everyone, we are TRYING to be fair to our existing paying advertisers who pay to advertise studio days. Where is the line between this thread and the banner advert for a studio day? Its a commercial venture, we dont know what is being made from these and have to try and figure out a fair rate that we think a studio can charge before it becomes a commercial activity. we all know a model can be hired for a copy of pictures on CD, or for £30, or the promise of fame and fortune.

There have been a lot of studio owners pimping FOC, and that has to stop.

I did actually say to the OP that any charge was still under discussion and it would be minimal, and it would also be on a thread by thread basis.

Members clubbing together to book a studio is great and we are all for that

if anyone bothers to read the sticky at the top, they will find that it says:

that cant be clearer, we want to support these days but we need to be fair to our paying advertisers as well as our members. we could just a blanket rate on this but we havent even done that. TBH im disappointed that the OP has chosen to mention it in thread rather than wait and see what was decided.

Matty,

Thanks for your PM regarding this matter and I am aware it is still being discussed for future sessions that I plan, I wasnt aiming to ignore our chat I was just trying to highlight the fact to those that had signed up that due to me possibly having to pay to promote such a sessions that i may have to use alternatives ways to promote, to save the TP charges.

I know this is pending the outcome of your TP discussions I may not have to.

The models I have used have been paid for their time in cash rather than TFCD, this being the main reason for me charging to cover this cost.

I hadn't noticed the sticky at the top so will read that before future sessions.

Thanks Garry.

In the adverts I do state that I am not there to guide, its a mutual meeting place for like-minded togs.

If i was ever in place where i could offer training i would appreciate this is a different setup and attendance would cost more in which case paying an advertisement rate would not be an issue.

good shout Garry. I attended Carlo's studio meet a few weeks back and it was exactly as you anticipated above. I, for one, attended the meet with a view that i would prefer to 'try' the studio environment and bounce a few ideas around and see what other people were doing, how they were shooting / directing - but there certainly was no instruction from the organiser or attendees. Well, if there was.. it was well disguised

Thanks, it was always state that this was the purpose, although i did omit the fact there was digestives available

i agree

As long as you have a lens on the front, a card in the slot and a battery in there then you're good to go :-) Carlo's studio has the studio lights and a trigger you can put on your camera to fire them and several of us have other gear to be used outside if the weather permits.

beat me to it

Loved to have come to this one but the missus has started yoga on Thursday's and I've been having my fair share of green cards recently :( so it's a no go unfortunately

Still one place left, which i need to cover the two models if not it will be just the female model

Hi mate. Sorry for the delay but I actually didn't realise this thread was in this section.... anyway, Add me to the last space please and send me your PP details and I'll get the money transferred.

Cheers

Mark

PM replied. Money sent.

Mark

Money sent, see you on the 19th...

Payment received?

Still waiting for Payment from CheshireCarl, so if anyone wants to attend intend then let me know.

If i don't get the sixth places filled, i may have to cancel one of the models, in which case those that have booked would you prefer a male or female model?

thanks

This is the whole problem - you simply can't operate on a basis that requires full attendance just to cover your costs, it's crazy...
The people who have booked and paid have done so on the basis that there will be 2 models, which you won't be able to afford if just one person doesn't book.

You need to charge enough to meet all expenses with less than the ideal number. Then, if you are fully booked but don't want to make any money, you can just pay the excess back to the people who attend.

I would prefer the male model, although irs not a deal breaker for me either way.

valid points, i tried to keep the costs low so that t was affordable for beginners, but i do agree.

There will still be two models on Thursday and there is a spare place in case anyones wants to come along

Male Model, has just cancelled so will have to look at getting a female model in, any objections?

thanks

b****r. I had an idea for the POTY competition.

Maybe I'll try to get one of the girls to do it!

Seriously though, no problem with 2 girls.

What's the POTY competition when its at home?

It's a shame there won't be a male model, something different, but it's ok with me.

Hopefully the weather will be ok so we can do some more outdoor shooting too, I need to make myself some more homemade speedlight grids, I squashed my last lot :)

making me jealous reading this thread now knowing i can't get there :bang:

I've just packed my 8 bags of various shapes and sizes ready for tomorrow in case I need to come straight from work.. nothing like travelling light ;-)

See you all later.

My camera's so new I don't yet have 1 case which can hold it (unless the posty's good to me today!

I'm hoping my grip and batteries turn up today, but I'd put 50p on them not arriving until tomorrow to spite me :) I have a busted shoulder to shooting vertical hurts like hell without a grip :gag:

just had a call from one of the models to say that she cant attend tonight although she was booked, so two models have dropped now, managed to replace another one with Emma but struggling to get a second on on board at short notice.

What do you want to do?
