I decided to have the sensor on my 40D cleaned at the end of February beacuse firstly it was dirty but secondly I knew the warranty would expire sometime in March.
I took it to Lehmanns in Stroke-on-Trent and after a short discussion they agreed to clean it and calibrate it free under warranty if I could produce the receipt. I asked for the viewfinder to be cleaned too which would be chargeable at £60.
When I got home I found the receipt which showed the warranty expired 5 days after I left it Lehmanns!
I collected the camera the following Saturday and was told you are 'very very lucky'.
Great I thought ..I've got away the £60 charge
.
In fact the camera needed a new sensor which would have cost £600 +
So on the way home I took a few pics and when I checked them on my computer I noticed a few dust spots
I took a few more shots which showed clearly that the sensor was dirty.
I contacted Lehmanns and was told to return it for checking.
I've just collected it again today (some 3 weeks after it was originally sent in) and it has had another new sensor fitted
Thank god I took it in for cleaning just in time
Apparently the Canon head office are very interested to see the failed new sensor.
So basically if your's is coming to the end of it's warranty get it checked.
They didn't even charge me the £60 for the viewfinder clean
Mind you I've not had a chance to check it yet as I only collected it just before 5pm tonight....
