Yes
I decided to have the sensor on my 40D cleaned at the end of February beacuse firstly it was dirty but secondly I knew the warranty would expire sometime in March.

I took it to Lehmanns in Stroke-on-Trent and after a short discussion they agreed to clean it and calibrate it free under warranty if I could produce the receipt. I asked for the viewfinder to be cleaned too which would be chargeable at £60.

When I got home I found the receipt which showed the warranty expired 5 days after I left it Lehmanns!

I collected the camera the following Saturday and was told you are 'very very lucky'.
Great I thought ..I've got away the £60 charge :).

In fact the camera needed a new sensor which would have cost £600 +

So on the way home I took a few pics and when I checked them on my computer I noticed a few dust spots :(

I took a few more shots which showed clearly that the sensor was dirty.

I contacted Lehmanns and was told to return it for checking.

I've just collected it again today (some 3 weeks after it was originally sent in) and it has had another new sensor fitted

Thank god I took it in for cleaning just in time :D

Apparently the Canon head office are very interested to see the failed new sensor.

So basically if your's is coming to the end of it's warranty get it checked.

They didn't even charge me the £60 for the viewfinder clean

Mind you I've not had a chance to check it yet as I only collected it just before 5pm tonight....

That is lucky. Mine is coming to around the 12 months so might just get it checked out.

Did you have any problems with it other than it needing a clean?

Just seems strange that you didn't notice a faulty sensor, doesn't it? Good that it was replaced regardless though!

Didn't really notice anything... but maybe thats why all my shots have not been that good

New camera price?

What do they do to clean the viewfinder that warrants £60?

Nice timing! :)

Anyone else thinking they cleaned the sensor with emery cloth & steel wool then realised that was a bad thing.
Twice.

It's not just the viewfinder itself.

I had some dust/hair that you could see through the viewfinder.
They weren't on the sensor so didn't affect the image but they were annoying.

They have to clean it from inside the camera so that is why it is so expensive.... unless you get it free :D
