A couple on non photo problems at the moment makes me wonder about warranties , especially on used gear ..
I.e you buy a camera / lens used from a dealer . If it breaks down in the warranty period do they .. send it back to manufacturer or get a back street job done or simply refund you as it’s less hassle .?
Any direct warranty work done would be nice to know about , my only claim ever was a canon body via wex after 6 months use and they just wrote it off and refunded me ?

As for other new items got two probs at the moment .. a sofa from DFS the built in usb charger has gone ,but we have to wait till they contact homeserve fo4 someone to look at it . !!!!

Beko washing machine from curry’s 6 months old p***ing water over the floor , had beko engineers out 3 times since xmas latest today replaced parts still doing it .. ?????

Bensons for beds total waste of overpriced rubbish , matteress had lump in middle after 6 months , they sent out assessor from homeserve ?? again .. ? Said it was wear and tear , refused to do anything . We had a look at it ourselves mid week the outer actually unzipped which we did and it all sprung back Ito place . So that’s cured but by ourselves …

So in this day and age is it worth paying for a warranty it does make me wonder

I wouldn't pay 'extended warranty' on anything. Even the regular guarantees tend to be wriggled out of wherever possible. I certainly wouldn't pay extra at a car dealer for a warranty. I'd rather keep the money and put it towards a repair if it was ever needed.

I had an experience with a Hoover washing machine yesterday. It's been vibrating and making us think the house is falling down and it's been walking across the floor with only minimal loads as if the drum is way out of balance but only sometimes... and these things are supposed to have an anti tangle action. No washing machine we've ever had before has done this. So I called the shop and of course they wont touch it so I rang Hoover who will come out but if it's a no fault found they'll charge me £75.

"Am I suppose to stand and argue the toss with him?" I asked to no sensible reply.

Actually I could probably get a local guy to take a look for less than £75 but if could be a case of "They all do that Guv." Well this one didn't when we first got it, it's only just started. My own opinion is that much of this stuff is made in China or elsewhere with zero oversight or quality control any more.

Sounds very much like the Hoover washing machine we bought during lockdown. When it spins the whole kitchen shakes. I wanted to return it immediately but got no response at all from Currys. I bought an anti vibration mat but couldn’t fit it under the machine so I put it on top which helps. I don’t think it is a fault, it is just poor construction, the worst washing machine we had ever had.

Like Chris I never buy extended warranties, I self insure. If I bought an extended warranty for everything it would cost a fortune and probably only a few of the appliances/machines would fail. I would rather pay for a few repairs or replacements.

In regard to this one.....

"Beko washing machine from curry’s 6 months old p***ing water over the floor , had beko engineers out 3 times since xmas latest today replaced parts still doing it .. ?????"

In your shoes I would make a claim in writing that the machine is clearly "not fit for purpose" and (clearly) "not of merchantable quality".

As such you give them 7 days to refund your money or provide a new machine (but not that model?).....the next one in spec up?...if they don't agree to meet your satisfaction! State that you will make a claim in the Small Claims Court.

Oh, also any damages to your flooring etc due to the above unsuitability of the machine!

Well I suppose just like anything else it all depends on the company and how you complain. Just before xmas my daughter got a new phone and passed her S20 on to SWMBO and as usual I was left to set it up for her and try as I might I just could not get it to recognise the new sim and after contacting the sim provider for help realised that the needed setting was missing from the phone, so I contacted Samsung UK to try and resolve the situation and after sending them a photo of the settings showing that the mobile networks setting was missing and even though the phone was just out of it's 2 year warranty they collected the phone by courier sent it to an authorised repair centre who replaced the motherboard, screen and battery and returned me a fully working phone free of charge.

Trouble is who do you write it to , the shop ? , the service centre, the companies pass you from pillar to post when you phone them .. I.e phone curry’s help line ,click various numbers on your phone and it directs you to beko who then put you through to a local service centre who threaten you with a £60 call out surcharge if they don’t deem it a manufactures fault .
There seems to be no way to contact either companies head office ?

My understanding is that your purchase 'contract' is with the retailer therefore they are the ones to provide the user satisfaction remedy

Apart from getting Citizens Advice Bureau insights I have done some digging and so far have found:-

1) request a refund here
This may or may not provide a route to get a full refund (and compensation) etc

2) I found the link above via this website

Where they also give the email address of the CEO (yet to dig around to double check that name is still correct)

3) a more general insight/summary of your rights

Though the explicit "phrases" I mentioned AFAIK are in regard so "Sale of Goods Act".

4) so far I can only find a PO box main address
PO Box 1687
Sheffield
S2 5YA
United Kingdom

You mention issue as at/from 6 months old.....just how old is it now? The reason I ask is whether and if you bought it on a credit card if Section 75 protection is an appropriate way to get your purchase price money back (none too sure if consequential losses are covered by that as well?)

Edit~ source of Section 75 info
