Warning notice on my laptop screen, I had a number that I should phone, I certainly don't trust anyone like that. 08000119278 Would this number be a scam, the warning read I have a virus and this is a Microsoft number, also it read you must phone this number before doing any online shopping, I don't do online shopping and because of a thread below took my card number from Amazon. Any help would be appricated. I'm going to log off and get my security to do a full scan. Never ever had such a thing, it wasn't when I logged out of here, it was Facebook.

That'll be a scam. I had one before with a picture of a police officer on saying I had visited illegal sites and had to pay to gain access to my computer.

I booted it in safe mode, ran a spybot malware program. Cleared first time and never came back

Type the number into google and see what you get. I bet it'll be something foreign and dodgy.

I tried this as it normally comes up with something, but it doesn't come up with any matches.

Most decent internet security programmes should have prevented this (though none are infallible of course). What internet security do you use?

FYI Microsoft would never work like this, nor do they ring people Cold calling saying you have a Virus...Pure Scam.. and well done

Well done all that have posted, the fact that people on here just take a moment to post and help immediately, when you have no one to ask its awful but thanks to you above you have helped me big time, a very big thank you.:):ty:, I can turn it off now.

It worked and removed the threat. My antivirus is Bullguard, didn't pick it up, the Malwarebytes picked it up after a full scan and its been removed.

Googled the number and it reads Texas Company search, ugh

Glad it worked for you, I scan with it regularly :)

This'll be a variation on ringing you up to tell you your computer has a virus, then. How would they know? They're preying on people who aren't too computer savvy and are panicked into responding in the way they want, just like the 'we've noticed suspicious activity on your bank account so give us all your money and we'll move it somewhere safe for you' (into our own pockets) little scam. Well done for stopping to think about it and ask - it must be quite scary when something like that happens. If everyone did what you did it wouldn't happen because no-one would ever bite.

I now use Avast free A/V, which works very well ... it sometimes tries to sell you extras or an upgrade but you can just close the box down.

@gramps - it even does that in the 'paid' version which is more than annoying :banghead:

:D didn't know that!

What makes it doubly annoying is it can stop all sorts of pop-ups but produces its own. Maybe I need yet another program which blocks Avast! pop-ups :)

I use windows defender & never had a problem.:)

Thanks Chris, is that for the paid version as I don't seem to have it in the free version, says I can't opt out. :)
Ah yes sorry, Gramps, its the paid version, I never gave that a thought tbh, cheeky buggers!
:D

I changed from Avast to Bitdefender and very happy so far.

These clowns tried it on me. I rang the number and wound them up for an hour , somehow they were not amused, I just played dumb and give false information. In the endwhen what they said didn't work I said does it have to be a pc because I was using an iPad and the hung up

Are you sure that's a free number or has it been rerouted ? I thought that's how these scamers made their money by keeping you on the phone for long periods at a time. Hopefully you haven't scored an own goal.

My mother managed to get one of these but with a US number; the lappie was also shouting at her with an American accent. Fortunately a reboot seemed make it go away as scans with Malwarebytes and Avast didn't find anything.
