WARNING: Lightroom 5.5 update

With the LR5.5 update just released I wonder if the rumours about LR6 coming out soon are wrong. I got another email from Adobe the other day trying to sell me the Photographers CC option of Photoshop and LR for £9. I hope it's not marking the end of the stand alone product.

.....I hope it's not marking the end of the stand alone product.

Adobe's product manager made this statement last year....
'Basically we have no plans to make Lightroom subscription-only at any point in the future. We have plans to make Lightroom available in its current form pretty much indefinitely.'

You might find that signing out of Adobe Creative Cloud and signing in again is enough to fix it. If you had older versions of LR prior to cloud you might also have to clear down some of the cache files. I can dig out the details if you need them.

Also, since 5.5 some plugins have stopped working due to reliance on the LR registration number which is no longer used under Creative Cloud. Notably several of Jeffery Friedl's plugins loose their licence registrations and can't currently be fixed. :-(

Tried quitting and reopening CC but that didn't work. How do I clear out cache files?

Here you go:

Make sure you have a backup of the catalog before trying this.
Make sure Lightroom is not currently running
Make sure you only empty the folders, don't delete the folder itself.

1. Sign out of Adobe Creative Cloud by going to the preferences and sign out.
2. Exit the Adobe Creative Cloud app.
3. Goto finder and to the following folder //Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SL Store folder.
on windows something like c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache\ (or maybe (x86)
4. Delete the files inside this folder.
5. then look for the //Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SL Cache folder.
6. Delete all the files inside this folder.
7. Empty your trash
8. Launch Lightroom
9. You will be asked to sign in again. click Not me then enter your adobe id and password.
10. You can then run and sign in with the Adobe Creative Cloud app.

Whilst the above steps fixed LR for me, I have an ongoing dialog with one of their support techs whilst they try to determine the cause of the issue. If anyone has experienced the more persistent version of this problem (i.e. not the version where simply signing out then in again is the fix) and can answer the following questions it might help them:

1. Were you able to launch Lightroom 5.5 ever? Or did it not work from you from the time you got it installed?
2. Did you have Lightroom 5.4? Did you install it from Adobe Creative Cloud app?
3. What are the Adobe products that you have on your machine?
4. Did you launch multiple instances of lightroom?
5. Did lightroom ever crash when you quit it?

It would be helpful if people stated PC or Mac when sharing their experiences.

On updating to LR 5.5, opening an image for editing in Photoshop would open Photoshop, but not the actual image in Photoshop. A quick search of the Adobe forum suggested it was a common issue, resolved by re-installing Photoshop CC. (Clean install, removing preferences during un-install)

I processed just shy of 700 images yesterday and it crashed randomly about four or five times. Otherwise, no noticeable difference.
That's on a PC running Win 8.1

Done and it worked, many thanks.

Jeffery Friedl has just released updates to his Lightroom plugins - they now work under LR5.5 creative cloud edition.
