well basically looking at buying my first DSLR once i have saved the funds, im currently using my brother Sony Alpha A200 which i like the feel of so was thinking about getting one of the newer models, which model would you recommend.

But i havent really looked at any other make of camera as am not sure where to start looking really. what other cameras should i be looking at, what are you recommendation.

i have only just taken up the hobby really in the last few months, and really enjoy it but not that clued up on the different camera, etc

It depends entirely on your budget Ric.

Then, pound for pound, there is very little to choose between the main contenders, Nikon and Canon, with Sony and Olympus also in there. The choice is rather more a personal and subjective one, rather than any one camera being significantly better in terms of the end result.

Set your budget. Go take a look at a few.

Edit: what you won't see so clearly in a shop is the very substantial ranges of lenses and accessories that Nikon/Canon have, plus additional third party support. Sony/Olympus are not badly catered for, but if you get keen you may be better off with Canon/Nikon. Also, because they have been around a long time, there is much more stuff on the used market.

You can get some real bargains buying used, not least in the For Sale section here. Some people upgrade pretty much for no good reason (okay, we all do ;) ) and as-new minters go for way lower than new price.

If you've got used to the a200 then I would recommend buying a second hand one for around £200 and then spend the rest on lenses.

18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens
55-200mm f4-5.6 kit lens
Sony 50mm f1.8

this will be a brilliant set up for you to get into photography.

I started with a Fuji Film bridging camera before buying a 2nd hand Canon EOS 350D. I felt the viewing in the back was a little on the small side and upgraded to 50D earlier this year.

I am no expert but I have always felt that there have been more choice of accessories etc for canon and nikon so I was always between the two makes for that reason.

I would look for a second hand camera. For Canon I would get anything from 400D upwards the other makes I can't comment on.

Go to a proper camera shop, an independant. Dont bother with Jessops, by Dog knows more about cameras than their assistants do.

Try ALL the bodies in your price range and decide what feels best. Me for example I can't stand the fit and feel of Canon. Their just too.. small for me. I am a Nikon man through and through.

I agree. Try a few out and I guarantee some will just feel that much more comfortable than others.
