Yes
Just taken delivery of a Canon EOS 1Ds in pretty condition. I download from my 5DII using a USB wire connection to my laptop and I'd like to do similar with the 1Ds which has a firewire port: can I use this to download and sidestep the crummy cf card reader: can I just buy a firewire to USB cable and do the job?

TIA

I have a Canon 1D but when I try to connect it to my iMac (running Big Sur) using Firewire to Thunderbolt it will not see the camera.

The old Canon1D series were designed to work with XP, so you could try, into Windows laptop, but I have a feeling it might not.

I'd get a decent card reader - far better that a reader should be pulled off a desk/table than the camera (all too easy for a cat/child/owner to catch the cable, however careful they think they are!)

That's probably close enough for me, thank you.

Have we met? :)
I've had this one for years and it has been faultless: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01ANDA8GE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I mainly used it for CF cards too. :)

I haven't used a Firewire connector for twenty years or more (they were crap then) . . .
Right, I'm ordering one right now. From your link. UPDATE: your recommended card reader was delivered by Amazon before 1.00pm next day which I consider excellent from a 4.15pm previous day order. And it works really well. BIG THANK YOU.

Firewire = crap? Fair point well made, thank you sir.

Don't think so!

FWIW, my card reader (SD and CF) is a USB3 connected Lexar one and has never been a problem.

ETA LINKY and to say that it closes up to protect the slots from the worst of the dust.
