Been wanting some strobist stuff for a while, so I'm going to buy a 430EX very shortly, so I can use it as a external flash on the camera, and also get a wireless kit, so I can shoot with it off the camera too.

I'm new to all of this, but I was wondering if it's possible to get some sort of soft box, or octagon box, and then use the 430EX with that, so there's not so much of a direct flash, and more of a studio thing, but to use outdoors.

If it's possible what do I need?

I do believe this guy uses a 580EX in the Octagon, so I assume I can use a 430EX too? Do I need any sort of clip, tripod, soft box?

I just don't know where to start!

I haven't bought anything as of yet, as I wanted to double check everything. I'm after a 430EX, and I have also spied a cheap flash on eBay too, which will fire automatically, so I can use that as a slave flash if needed, but one flash at the moment will do.

At the moment, I have a 400D, and this is the wireless thing I was going to get. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=230288089047&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=013. Didn't want to get one of the very cheap one's, or one of the expensive one's, as I don't know how much I'll use it.

This is the cheap flash I found: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=190240714222&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009

And lastly, do I need something like this to allow use of a umbrella, or a soft box? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/flash-light-s...tcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If so, what else do I need in terms of a stand? Something like this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Professional-...tcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I also saw this, is it any good? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Calumet-8-lig...tcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Ideally, I'd love a soft box, but a Umbrella set-up would be just as good.

Photomart do a softbox for speedlights that will fit your 430ex for about £35.

Can't advise you on the rest of the stuff as all your links are dead :shake:

I considered an ezybox before I bought the photomart one. I looks a lot better built, but by the time you get all the bits you need for it you are well over £100.....

Thanks, I'll have a check of it now.

Sorry, I copied from a car forum I post on, and they truncate links... I'll update the first post with the links working.

Hi Keith
Take a look at http://www.lastolite.com they supply their 'ezybox' (check their demo video's)

Also I would suggest you visithttp://www.strobist.com the best site for learning off camera flash!

Hope this helps!

I'll have a look at this too, thanks. Been reading up on strobist for a while, so I thought it was time to take the jump, and buy some gear to practice with.

You got any shots of the Photomart one? Is it the one you suggested to me?

Set-up shots and/or example shots of it being used would be great to help me!
