I wasn't really sure where to put this

I've had plays on the 5D Mk2 and Mk3 and with Canon bringing out the 6D I'm wanting to the FF goodness as soon as I can!

I'm just getting a budget together now as I'm after a 5DMkII. I'd like to buy one with a crazy low shutter count or maybe even brand new but I don't really wanna get ripped off.

Whats kind of prices do they go for and what should I look out for on a used one? This'll be my first pro-grade DSLR so I'm not after a pup!

cheers!

I paid £1500 for a 6 month old 5D mk2 (under 1200 actuations) with 100mm 2.8L Macro lens, so I'd guess about £1000 of that was the 5d. I've seen some go for £950 or even slightly less now though, so I'd hazard a guess at £900 or so being the going rate these days.

I'd say look for a low shutter count (confirmed with eoscount or similar) as well as one that's free of bumps, scratches etc.., basically a camera that looks like it's been looked after. It's probably ideal if you can find one that's been owned by someone that just didn't have the time to make much use of it. Otherwise you're just looking for one that's been used by someone that takes good care of their kit, and I'm sure there are a few appear in the classifieds here that fall into that category (and maybe the former as well).

don't get obsessed with very low counts (many will be fake anyway). They are built to take hundreds of thousands of images, not hundreds. However just a few unlucky ones end up in a service with very low usage...

With the 5D mmii being just short of £1500 (UK prices), then I'd expect a 2nd hand one to be around the £900 - 1100 depending on age etc

HDEW are currently listing the mkII at £1179 http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-18-c.asp this is a grey import and there are other places available.

DigitalRev currently have them for £1150 (grey import) which is a no brainer over the current second hand prices.

Normally I wouldn't hesitate to buy second hand and save myself a few pennies but with such a small price difference between new and second hand I'd be more likely to opt for a grey import.

Woah, so I can pick them up pretty cheap then!

£1k for the camera doesn't sound all that bad, but what is the situation regarding servicing and warranties etc?

£1000 will buy you one in mint condition, gripped and a couple of spare batteries.

I'm debating selling my 5D2 at the mo and downgrading, so am looking at value with interest, I think v low shutter ones are still fetching just over the 1k mark. If I sell that's what I'd expect to get.

Hdew will also give a vat chit if required, unlike panamoz and the like.

Why would anyone pay 1K for a used one if they can get a new one for 1.1 / 1.2K? And yes I know for that price it's a "grey" import but it's exactly the same camera with warranty.

Alot of good points here being made.

I think the only thing I would worry about over everything is the warranty.. something like a 5D Mk2 regardless of the reliability of it's shutter would be crazy expensive to fix so used to me sounds a little silly considering it's more than likely to be out of its warranty anyway. Even if I did just go for a 1-3 year one!

What else do you reckon I should get with it? I'm setting myself a budget of £2.5k for some glass. I'm looking at the 100mm L Macro F/2.8L, 50mm F/1.4 and 17-40mm F4.

thats a great list of glass there m8 may also want to look at the 70-200

If you get one from Ian (Kerso) on here Canon will repair any problems. Canon will also repair lenses from HDEW as they give you a UK invoice, it's worth a phone call to Canon re their stance on bodies from HDEW.

As you say, if you buy 2nd hand there is a very strong possibility you won't have a warranty,

That may have just sold it for me!

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a Mk2 as soon as possible!

Yeah I would use hdew myself or digital rev. I'm sure hdew offer 3 year warrant but you go through them if you have issues.

I just picked up a 5D mk2 with 1000 clicks on it for £750 body only. Chuffed is not the word!!!

Will post pics up the second I've got the baby in my hands, will definitely be a couple of weeks though... :D

Wow what a great bargain:thumbs:

I must admit, I gagging for a full frame.

I've been for the past 8 months or so. I can't justify the Mk3 or any 1D series camera but when this came up I snatched at the chance to have it!

Why would you buy a 5d2 for £1500 when you can buy a d800 for £1800!!;)

I have the 100L macro and it is a very fine lens indeed. I use it for close ups, but is perfectly crisp for longer shots too. To be honest though, I used to have the non-L version and the image quality difference between the two was marginal to say the least. The only major differences were the weather protection and the image stabalisation. So I would definitely consider the much cheaper non-L version, if those differences arn't important to you.

I use a Sigma 1.4 50mm too. Again, I love that lens! It's much cheaper that the Canon's 50mm 1.4 too.

Regarding the 5D mk 2 body. I've used Canon exclusively since moving digital. Started off with 1 used 1ds mk1 and then got my 5D mk 2. I've had the 5D for 18months and have taken 22,400 or so images. They should be good for 150,000 clicks. I think that the number of actuations is largly academic, as it's difficult to get anywhere near the maximum! These cameras are very well built, and any issues are more tha likely to arise at the beginning. Unless you see signs of physical damage, I wouldn't be too concerned about the extended warranties.
