Yes
I already have a tripod, but it's not ideal for taking animals at the zoo, so I'm thinking of a monopod.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for a cheapest one, with good stability.

Calumet do a nice cheapish range. I've bought one of theirs for about 20 quid. Does the job fine. I needed to add a head and got lucky with an old Calumet ball-head off eBay. Be careful of the max height if you are on the tall side as it is really annoying if the viewfinder is a little too low at max extension.

Redsnapper!

Another thumbs up for the Redsnapper mono pod and mini ball head.

I bought one of these earlier this year, very impressed, call them and speak to Joe, get 10% off for being TP member.

Thanks. I might just go with a cheap Camlink CMP-2 one which costs £17.
I'm wondering this monopod needs a head for it? Or it just as simple as screwing it into the base on my Nikon?

This months PhotoPlus magazine has a free Manfrotto monopod as a subscription offer - the web site hadn't been updated last time I looked, but is in the current magazine as an offer
